Hummingbirds are among the smallest birds in the world. There are more than 400 species of hummingbirds on earth, and they all live in the Western Hemisphere. Only 19 varieties are found in the United States and of those only 1 species is found east of the Mississippi River. This is the species that inhabits the Laurel Lake area. Its name is the Ruby-throated hummingbird.
Hummingbirds are named for the humming sound they make while flying. While in flight, the hummingbird's wings move 60 to 70 times per second.
Hummingbirds diet consists of nectar they suck from flowers.
Hummingbirds measure only 3 to 4 inches in length. Both male and female have bright green metallic feathers on the anterior part of their bodies. The male has a bright red spot on its throat. The female's throat has a white spot.
Ruby-throated hummingbirds' nests are as small and dainty as they are. Aftermating, the female lays two tiny white eggs in the nest. Young hatch inapproximately 2 weeks. When the offspring arrive, they have no feathers andthey cannot see, but within 3 weeks they are mature enough to leave the nest.
