Insects

Insects have been on earth longer than man. Scientists feel that there are millions of insects on earth that have not been discovered.

The insect has an exoskeleton. The exoskeleton is composed of chitin, among other things. Theexoskeleton is lighter and stronger than bone.

Exoskeletons do not grow with the insect. When the exoskeleton becomes too tight, it is shed by a process known as molting.

There are 3 main parts of the insect's body: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen.

Most adult insects have 2 large compound eyes. Insects are the only animals besides birds that have wings.

Insects life cycles occur in 4 stages: the egg, the larva, the pupa, and the adult.

Insects have four types of mouthparts: chewing, sucking, piercing-sucking, and chewing-lapping.
