Yellow Poplar

The yellow poplar, or tulip tree, gets its name from its yellow colored heartwood and its beautiful tulip-shaped flowers. It is one of the largest and most valuable hardwood trees of the state. Yellow poplars are plentiful in WestVirginia and in the Laurel Lake area.

The yellow poplar grows between 80 and 150 feet in height with a diameter of 3 to 10 feet. The trunk of the yellow poplar is long and straight. The yellow poplar reproduces rapidly.

Leaves are 4 to 6 inches long with 4 lobes. The leaves are dark green in summer and turn yellow in autumn.

The yellow, tulip-shaped flowers appear in May and June. The fruit is 2 to 3 inches long. The seeds are enclosed in the cones and are easily distributed by the wind.

The wood is used for furniture and for interior and exterior trim.
