Came to New Zealand, aged 19, with her cousin Eliza MANFIELD, sailed from Hampshire on 29 September 1877 on the 'Renfrewshire' as assisted passengers, both listed as domestics, they arrived in Napier 11 January 1878. Came over when Ellen's sister Emily had been married for 4 years and had 2 children. Ellen married her brother-in-law's brother, they had no children.

It is said that she worked at the Odeon Picture Theatre, Hastings Street, Napier, on the Lolly counter and used to give her sister Emily's children sweets, she was very close to their family. Worked for Mr George Ebbett (Mayor of Hastings) looked after his children Dorothy, Marjory, James Harold, George W Neal and Ruth Jane, they called her 'Woo'. Mrs Eliza Maude EBBETT died 1933, Hastings and Mr George EBBETT died 1954, Hastings.  Have photos of EBBETT children.

Went back to Nailsea with her sister Emily, when they were both widows in 1909. Ellen is buried in Plot 143F, Hastings Cemetery, Hastings with her husband. Ellen died of Coronary Thrombosis - 6 hrs, aged 78.
