Karate is such a good band. A more bluesy sounding Sunny Day Real Estate comes to mind. Ben Folds Five at times? Less whiney, new Piebald-ish vocals? Whatever it is, I'm really liking it. "there are ghosts" has the perfect transitions. The lyrics to almost every song are involved and inteligent. How can you not like "so quiet i hear the refrigerator is on. i can hear the fabric of your sleeping bag--how it sounds against someone else's floor"? For those of you who are familar with the scene, Geoff Farina (vocals & guitar) is also in local band, The Secret Stars (whose webpage is: http://www.secretstars.com/) and has a solo release out now too. Listening to "The Last Wars" it almost brought to mind The Counting Crows. Okay, i'm sure that Karate doesn't want to be considered similar to a band like the Counting Crows, but I like it and *parts* of the song sound almost similar to "round here", back from the early 90s. Just ignore that if you don't like that band. Definitely support your Boston scene by checking out Karate. Did I forget to mention that this is their third release? I think i forgot.
