Finally .. I have the sequel to the original. And a decent copy too. VCD. While its not better than the original, it's very entertaining. I had monstrous expectations of this movie, that's probably why I didn't find it "amazing", but it was great nonetheless. It's your typical Kung Fu/Taoism movie. As usual Lam plays the taoist priest and Sammo plays his student, along with Meng Hoi. I had a hard time reading 90% of the subtitles though as they were white and kept blending in with the background, damn annoying. If I didn't have to focus so hard reading them I would have enjoyed it much more. I didn't really grasp hold of the storyline though cause I don't think there is one.
Basically though, an evil sorcerer comes to town and starts causing some trouble to Sammo. That's it, screw the plot .. I don't feel like explaining it, i'm just gonna talk about parts that I liked. Nothing can beat a HK actioner with Horror thrown in. I love it. 'The Seventh Curse' is also another example of a HK action movie with horror .. extremely gory horror too. This movie isn't as gory as 'The Seventh Curse', though there are still a few scenes that aren't very pleasant. If you have an utter hate and disgust of cockroaches then too bad, Sammo gets COMPLETELY covered in them here and it looks like he did it for real too. They crawl down his back, up his nose, and even down his pants. The guy has no fear I tell ya. The evil sorcerer does all this cool taoist stuff too. He stuffs cockroaches into decaying corpse's bodies and resurrects them to go and kill Sammo. One of the zombies looks like a cross between ET and a gremlin, check the pic. The finale is the best part though. The sorcerer hides inside a cave and Lam, Sammo and Meng go in to get him. The sorcerer uses everything at his disposal, he sends out kung fu mummies to attack aswell as kung fu snake men, cool stuff. The clip is a little bit of 'mummy kung fu'. Heaps of cool magic and taoist tricks and most importantly, great fight action. I have no idea who the snake men were played by but they were pretty good. It's the typical Sammo action choreography. Great stuff. It's got some of the best ghoul and goblin fighting i've ever seen. Heck, even Lam uses a 'yin yang' yo-yo to attack with!
I have a copy downloaded off the net and put onto VCD. It was my only option. The movie is more rare than 'Tiger Cage 2'. The only version I have actually seen is a mandarin VCD from sensasian.com but it was out of stock. Of course you can buy the VHS tape, but noone buy's VHS anymore, they're ancient. Overall though, great HK actioner with the taoism element thrown in and monster fighting, top stuff. Watch it if you liked the original Spooky Encounters movie or "Mr. Vampire". 4/5.
I give it 4/5 because it would have been nice to see more of the ghoul fighting throughout the movie.
