---------- ASTORIA STREETS ----------

----- ASTORIA STREETS------ ____________ Mon 7-19-99 1253pm___:::: I lived on 24th ROAD. Were I to walk over to 21st STREET, the main north-south avenue along the East River in Queens the streets I would cross going northwards towards the Long Island Sound were : 24 AVENUE, 23 Terrace, 23 DRIVE, 23 ROAD, 23 AVENUE, 22 DRIVE, (under the Hellgate Bridge), 22 ROAD, DITMARS BOULEVARD (Most people turned eastwards here unless they lived in this corner of Astoria), 21 DRIVE, 21 ROAD, 21 AVENUE, 20 AVENUE. Then came a big patch of land owned, I believe, by the utilities and then the water...... Going SOUTHWARDS from 24th ROAD was 24 DRIVE, Hoyt AVENUE north, (The Triboro Bridge), Hoyt AVENUE south, On the west Astoria Park South went diagonally, 25 ROAD, 26 AVENUE on the west only, On the west 26 ROAD went diagonally, And then came Astoria Square: Astoria Boulevard came in from the northwest and Newtown Avenue came in from the southeast. On the west of the square, heading up to the northwest was ?Newtown Avenue? (The map isn't clear and going to the southwest was Main Avenue (From Ast. Blvd). Below that were 27 ROAD, 28 AVENUE, 29 AVENUE, 30 AVENUE, 31 AVENUE, 31 ROAD, 31 DRIVE, BROADWAY.... After that we considered it to be Long Island City but there may have been another name for it. ........ ...... ...... ...... ....... ........ ....... NOW GOING WEST TO EAST we first had SHORE BOULEVARD along the river and on the West side of the park. Along the park on the EAST side, we had 19th STREET. Next 21st STREET, Then 23 STREET, 24 STREET, CRESCENT STREET, 26 St, 27 St, 28 st, 29 st, 31st STREET, 32,33,35,36,37,38, STEINWAY STREET, 41,42,43,45,46,47,48,49 th Streets............. ............. .................. .............. ............... ............... Now if we start at the corner of 24th Road and 21st St and looked directly south we would see the huge suspension bridge, Triboro Bridge, one block south. Turning left 908 we would face down 24th Rd, one block long. If we walked we then walk along the side of a house whose entrance would be on 21st St. Then after walking the length of the two story house we'd then walk along the fence along its backyard. There were a row of such fences and yards behind it. Then we'd pass the shorter 'garbage pit', a cinderblock or concrete structure about six, seven feet high, painted white, greay, or green over the years. Its side would be facing us. It contains trash cans for the whole side of the block. Two sections. 8-10 cans in each one. Going back tio a high metal pair of gates. Walking farther we next pass a driveway that leads in front of the garbage pit on a right angle to the sidewalk and back to those high gates. Next was my house. There was a small yard in front. Had a fence all around. A locked gate in front. Just the width of the front room. Ten feet? The yard itself was below street level by a couple of feet. Next came the front stairs for both 21-11 and 21-13. Brick bannister on either side. The houses then were covered by fake red brick which peeled off. A few steps up to a landing. Then a step to the doors. A few feet between the doors. Then one would walk along the length of Dale's house with the same type of fence and yard only now it was twice as long as Jimmy's house was there too. (The doors were by twos and the homes were mirror images of each other. So we have Dales house and double window and then Jimmy's before reaching the next double stairs. I think this went on for another couple of houses and that 'Moose' and his brother lived upstairs in the very last one. Then came a high gate between the last house and a garage. Then came the garage (single? double?). Then was the long back yard of the house where 'the other Mary' lived. Other yards behind hers. Then the side length of her house. Then the next street (Where I stepped on that thing when running and fell). Now let's start on the other side across the street and back starting at 21st St. There was a nicer one-family house there. One would walk along the length of its wide side yard 9which wrapped around unto 21st St). This went the length of the whole house from the corner and some feet more along its backyard. Then came a nice two car garage. Now was the first property with a door on 24th Rd and across from my house. That house was also recessed and had a big yard out front behind a fence. It had a driveway that went in a few yards and then steeply down to the garage below. A car went down between the house and the double garage of the first house. This house also suddenly had a white ceramic cat put on its front suddenly in about 1962. Then was another house just like it. Then a double driveway downwards for two houses.(It was just before these that that cranky lady grabbed that older guys ear ) Then two houses just like the first two. Then another single driveway down. Then a fence and a backyard to a house that fronted on 23rd St. This was a long house, not quite as fancy. Along the sidewalk was a long fence with a gate in the middle and a yard behind and the side length of the house. Mon 7-26-99 948pm YCP
