The First Missionaries in Hawaii

When the first missionaries came to the Hawaiian Islands to spread the word of God, the incredible death toll from European introduced diseases created the perfect climate for conversions to the Christian religion. The Hawaiians, convinced that they were being punished for worshipping their native gods, converted to the Christian religion with the belief that everlasting life will thus be granted to them.
Along with their intent of converting the natives, missionaries also built schools and created a writing system for the Hawaiian language.
