The Reciprocity Treaty of 1876 was the first successful attempt by supporters, mainly the sugar planters in Hawai'i, to negotiate with the U.S. government for a tariff free law. With this treaty, all Hawaiian products and manufactured goods such as sugar, rice, etc... entered the United States tariff free, saving all Hawaiian planters significant expense. Likewise, certain American products entered Hawai'i free of duties. As a stipulation to the treaty, a clause was also proposed stating that Hawai'i can have this special relationship with only the U.S. and no other nation. Significantly, reciprocity was the first step towards annexation of Hawai'i.
