THE FOOTBALL STAT THEY HID A FEW YEARS AGO!

......ADDED MORE ....... JANUARY 6, 2007........ UNDER CONSTRUCTION Last here: FRIDAY JANUARY 26, 2006. Thursday 1-13-05.. Wed 1-19-05 Tues 1-25-05 . Friday Feb 4, 2005. Forgot my notes. Nothing done., 2-15-05

For decades the statistic "yards per completion" was always included in football statistics. It has since quietly vanished. Yet is was the stat that showed which quarterbacks had the 'best arms'. Then came the awful 'quarterback rating equation' and then yards/completion disappeared. (More about the QB equation later) Then came the helmet radios and long-passing collapsed. Perhaps because the coach now called the plays and old coaches tend to be more conservative than young quarterbacks that wanted to use their young arms and liked to take chances. The lower line for a great long-passer was 14.0 yards/attempt. And you practically never see that anymore. There was also that "West Coast Offense" which also looked successful, but boring, and was copied by many other teams. (Young people nowadays don't even know what a great passer can do as quarterbacks are all required to be so conservative. What they call a man with a great arm now has stats that are lower than what the AVERAGE quarterback did a few decades ago. And the ones that rack up many yards now do it with a lot more attempts at a lot more short passes.)

Here are the 2004-5 NFL QUARTERBACK STATS that appeared in the paper. ONCE AGAIN they gave the yards/attempt and NOT the yards/completion, which is where the excitement is. But I worked out the yards/completions. Compare them with the stats on these pages:

Manning 13.56

Brees 12.06

Roeth 13.37

Green 12.44

Brady 12.82

Pennington 11.05

Volek 11.40

Plum 13.50

Carr 12.39

Left 11.01

Culpepper 12.45

McNabb 12.92

Griese 11.30

Bulger 12.35

Favre 11.82

Delh 12.54

Warner 11.80

Rast 12.12

Brou 12.33

Ratt 10.95

These numbers are pathetic! As I said elsewhere the quarterback formula was one cause of the fear of throwing long passes nowadays. But I believe that the other reason were these helmet radios which turned quarterbacks into puppets. It is also interesting that people say how great it is that BLACK quarterbacks are now being used. But note that coaches didnt really integrate until helmet radios could give them direct control of the quarterbacks.

It is also ironic that at the time that other sports were turning into mindless unlimited offense and little defense to bring more idiots into the seats that NFL football went in the other direction and virtually got rid of the LONG PASS!!!

February 14, 2005: Donovan McNabb was asked a couple of days ago if he was sick during the end of the Superbowl and did someone else choose the plays. His answer was, "I GET MY PLAYS THROUGH MY HELMET". (They are now all marionettes who are controlled directly by old Conservative coaches.)

There was recently a big article in one of the NYC tabloids about a quarterback only having a 50.0 completion rate. Many GREAT long-pass throwing QBs had a 50.0 rate or lowere. These idiots only think in terms of tiny passes now!

Here is something from college football I ran across:

1964 .472 completion percentage 6.14 yards/attempt (1.20 int 12.0 yds)

2003 .568 completion percentage 7.13 yards/attempt (1.06 int 12.69 yds) ..........

THE QUARTERBACK RATING FORMULA IS STUPID and it is probably a major reason that quarterbacks no longer may act like quarterbacks.

First of all, it is NOT a true equation. It is a jumble of things that were stuck to gether. I should know. I studied Astrophysics from 1967 to 1978 and I did many equations. ( I never learned how to type, though, as we never had term papers) And anyone with even just a bachelor's degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Math can see what an abomination it is. A TRUE equation comes from combining earlier real equations and cancelling out until you get it down to its simplest form. AND one must use UNITS on both sides of the equation and they are subject to the same rules as numbers in the case of multiplying, dividing, and cancelling. If a person goes 100 miles in two hours it is: 100 miles/2 hours = 50 miles/hour. You CANNOT have units on one side and then not on the other unless they cancel to zero. Yet the phony QB formula has units on the left which may or may not have any relationship to what other units are there. And suddenly this hodge-podge of apples and turtles becomes a number without any units. Obviously they just played around and got what they wanted to get at the end... UNDER construction, just now building. NOT checked for bad typing.

Secondly, when one 'eyeballs'it it does not give anything anywhere near what people expect. One does not see the greatest QBs come out on top. Just the most cautious ones.

There were many times when I took tests in Physics and wasn't sure of an equation. So I would test it by putting extreme numbers into it and see if they made sense. This is also how I scored so high on the SATs etcetera. You have to use extreme numbers as conservative ones won't show you whether you EXACTLY used the correct one. Only an equation that is EXACT will still work for very extreme numbers.

Well, I tried that with the QB "formula" and it turns out that the less a QB acts like a QB and the more he acts like a GOLF TEE the higher his rating. Pardon my rudeness but if the late Christopher Reeve was a QB in his motorized wheelchair he would have been listed as the greatest QB in history. Imagine him in his wheelchair with the football on his lap. He spins quickly and the receiver catches it. It's a COMPLETION each time! and there's virually NO CHANCE of an INTERCEPTION!!! And what the QB formular mostly does is punish you for your mistakes much more than reward you for your achievements. So it's much safer to not try to achieve much. The formula is not based on doing well but on not doing wrong. Yet, not only does HAVING a successful long passer force the defense to spread their men much more (which also helps the running game) but it also negates all the mistakes that could have been made without it: If a 40 yard pass is successful it means that one does not have to slog through four ten-yard first downs with all the many chances of losing the ball or having to give it up. Yet these two advantages are not included in their thinking. And of course one does NOT GET CREDIT FOR FOUR FIRST DOWNS when one connects with a forty foot pass as one would with a bunch of tiny passes or runs. .... Here's another thought. Suppose a quarterback throws a 100 yard pass for a touchdown. Just think of all that gives that is more than just a touchdown. There would be only ONE down used instead of MANY to slowly go across the field. That means far fewer chances of your quarterback being injured.... UNDER CONSTRUCTION 1-14-05 1-19-05 1-16-2006
