Catherine Leona Newton
was born May 1911 in Kensington, Smith County, KS*, and died Feb 1991 in South Dakota. She is buried in Polk County, Iowa, next to my grandfather, Charles L. Reed. Her parents were Roy Freeman Newton and Mabel Crystine Bergren. She married Charles in Iowa. They had 8 children.

* recently I discovered in comparing family information to her obituary and then to her death certificate that her birth place is listed in the obituary and family information as Kensington in Smith County whereas her death certificate lists Kansas City.

Roy Freeman Newton was born Dec 1886 in Wathena, Doniphan County, KS, and died Oct 1947 in Iowa. His parents were Marion Phoenix Newton and Mary Catherine Graham (Cathern). His siblings included John (b 1884 NE), Barbara J (b 1880 KS), Olive, Margurite Myra (b 1881 NE), Cora Gertrude, and Elijah Floyd (b 1894 NE).

Marion Phineas Newton was born Feb 1858 in Iowa. His parents were Elijah Glover Newton and Minerva Jane Lewis. His siblings included Nancy Ann (b 1855 IA), John Glover (b1856 OH), Barbara E (b 1859 KS), William S (b 1860 KS), Elmira J (b 1864 KS), Sherman E (b 1865 KS), Mary E (b 1868 KS), Hattie (b 1869), G E (b 1871 KS), Nellie (b 1873 KS), Gertrude (b 1878 KS), and Vernon (b 1891 KS). He married Mary Catherine Graham 1/3/1878 at Dallas County, IA. He died 5/6/1918 At Valley Township, Guthrie County, IA. Mary (Cathern) died 9/9/1916 in Valley Township, Guthrie County, IA. Both were buried at Union Cemetary, Guthrie Center, Guthrie County, IA.

Elijah Glover Newton - Minerva Jane Lewis
was born 2/9/1831 in Fountain Co., IN. His parents were Phineas Newton and Nancy Hickman. He married Minerva Jane Lewis 5/4/1854 at Polk Co., IA. Minerva was the daughter of Abraham Lewis and Nancy Swope. Minerva died 11/22/1893 at Wathena, KS. Elijah died2/20/1902 at Wathena, KS. Both are buried at the Bellemont Cemetary, Wathena, Doniphan Co., KS.

Mabel Crystine Bergren was born Jan 1895 in Iowa or KS and died Dec 1976 in Iowa. She married Roy Freeman Newton and they had 4 children: Catherine L., Edith, Marion (son) and one still living daughter. Her parents were Peter Bergren and Lena Larsen*

Peter Bergren was born 1860 in Sweden, and died Apr 1925 in Iowa. He married Lena Larsen. Siblings included Ruben (died Jul 1930 in CA), Carl (died CO), and Emma (died 1974 in IA)

Lena Larsen was born 1864 in Centerville, Iowa and died Sep 1904 in Los Angeles, CA.
