2000-2001 Season Preview

The 2000-2001 season will soon be upon us and here are a few things to
watch for this year.

1- Sergio Avila - Sergio is a two time state medalist. He took 5th at
state last year and will again be a top contender for a Mat Classic
medal this year. His 52 wins in his first two years is the 4th highest
total in school history (#1 Nick Pell 67, #2 Ale DeLaPena 63, #3 Travis
Knutson 61).

2 - Jesse DeLaPena - Jesse is the other 2 time state participant
returning for the Bears this year. Jesse is an aggressive wrestler and
surprised more than a few opponents last year with his agressive style.
A Mat Classic medal this year would make Jesse just the 7th wrestler in
Bears history to earn two State Medals.

3 - Josh Corke - Josh would like to become just the third Bear wrestler
to pick up State Medals in their Freshman and Sophomore years (Sergio
and Travis Knutson are the others). Josh has shown the ability to beat
anybody he wrestles. Josh is on the attack from the moment the whistle
blows and never lets up.

4 - Some other wrestlers who will make an impact this year:

Josh Corriel - should be ready to make a bid for a trip to state this
year. His toughness is not in question after leading the Bears in
rushing during the football season.

Ramon DelAngel - Has been injured during the post-season the past two
seasons. If he can stay healthy, he should be a contender for a state
birth.

Mark McCullough - If Mark wrestles like he did at the District
tournament last year, he should do well in the post season tourneys.

Kyle Nickerson - Kyle is a wrestler who looks like he could have a
breakout season this year.

Chris Dehmer - Chris will be asked to step up his game with the
graduation of Angel Mejia. He has shown the potential to do just that.

Josh Grier - Josh was a pleasent surprise last year. He won some big
matches while Joey Isley was out with an injury. He also got some
needed Regionals experience las year.

Cody Roos - Cody also got some much needed Regionals experience last
year. Cody could provide some highlights this year.

This is the first year since 1993 that the Bears will be without a
state champion on its roster. The three returning state wrestlers:
Sergio, Jesse and Josh Corke will be looked on to provide leadership
for the team. Coach Hill and coach Cunningham will have this group of
Bears ready to wrestle. It should be a very interesting season.
