SCAC Regionals Tournament

The Bears are sending 6 wrestlers and 1 alternate to state, 4 boys and 3 girls.

BOYS

112 - Travis Roos (3-1, 2pins 3rd) has turned out to be a force to be reckoned with. I overheard one wrestler from another school who seemed to be concerned with where Roos was in the tournament and how he was doing. Travis is certainly on the minds of other wrestlers. Despite losing 13-0 to eventual champ, Danny Barajas of Royal, Travis wrestled better against him than most of Barajas other opponents. Travis gets my vote this year for the most improved wrestler.

119 - Matt McCallum (2-2 5th) ran into some heavy competition in this tournament. There was Franky Jiminez of Warden (2nd, 4th at State), Sammy Salcedo of Granger (3rd, 7th at state), Skylar Davis of Zillah (1st, 3rd at state) and Joe Salcedo of Granger (state vet), Hank Ellis (state vet). Matt wrestled an action packed match with Joe Salcedo losing 7-5 in the first round. Matt got in deep of Salcedo on a number of occasions but Salcedo was there to counter most of them. McCallum won a controlled 3-0 match over Ellis and then lost another close match to Jiminez 4-2, where again Matt was the aggressor. Being #5 in this group of wrestlers is quite and accomplishment.

125 - Andy Campbell (2-2, 4th) started the day with an exciting and controversial overtime win over #1 Eric Meza of Mabton. It looked like Meza might have gotten a takedown at the end of regulation, but the referee waved it off to keep the score tied. Andy them got the takedown in OT for the win. After a long discussion by Mabton coaches, Andy kept his win. After dropping to the consolation bracket, Andy avenged a district loss to David Montes of Connell with a dominating 7-3 win. This will be Andy's 2nd trip to state.

152 - Chris Howell (2-2, 1 pin, 4th) recorded an impressive OT win over Jose Barajas of Wahluke in a first round consolation match and then pinned his way over Dallas White of Royal for a state trip. Chris has earned his trip to state with hard work and determination. The experience Chris has had this year in wrestling will make him one of the leading wrestlers in the district next year.

171 - Salvador Acosta (0-3, 8th) placed 8th and made steady improvement during the season. Salvador wrestled with all his heart in every match and he will be missed on the team next year.

GIRLS

103 - Cassie Loza (2-2, 4th) recorded a couple pins on her way to a 4th place showing. Cassie showed great improvement this year and should come back even better next year.

112 - Delene Rucker (2-0, 2 pins, 1st) dominated the class at Connell with 2 pins and never let up on her two opponents. Delene still has one of the best shots on the team and continues to tear apart her competition in the girls division. She will do well at state this weekend.

130 - Amy Campbell (2-2, 1 pin, 3rd) started strong with a pin and a major decision. In the finals she wrestled a tough match against Melissa Orozco of Connell and nearly pulled off a championship, losing by just 1 point. Amy then lost a tough "true 2nd place" match to finish 3rd and become the state alternate at 130. Amy will be a wrestler to reckon with in the years to come.

135 - Sheridan McDonald (2-0, 2 pins, 1st) continued to take no prisoners. She demolishes anyone in her way and this tournament was no different. 2 pins led McDonald to the championship and the girls at Mat Classic better be ready to wrestle or Sheridan will tear them apart. She will probably tear them apart even if they are ready to wrestle.

140 - Samantha Wright (0-2, 4th) placed 4th and wrestled two hard matches. Samantha is a much improved wrestler with a bright wrestling future ahead of her.
