Mat Classic XXI

2009

The girls placed 7th as a team with Sheridan McDonald taking her 2nd straight title and Delene Rucker taking an impressive 4th, recording 4 pins in the tournament.

The Boys made a good showing with Matt and Andy taking home 8th place medals and Travis Roos and Chris Howell wrestling 2 tough matches each. As a team they took 32nd.

GIRLS

112 - Delene Rucker (Sr, 4-2, 4 pins, 4th) had an outstanding tournament with 4 pins. She started the tournament with a 50 second pin and then after dropping down to the consolation round, she recoreded 3 straight pins to move into the 3rd-4th place match. The most impressive win of the day was a pin over Emma Destromp of Kelso with 10 seconds left in the match. Destromp was a #1 from Region 3. Delene improved her placing from 6th last year to 4th this year. This was a great way for Delene to end her career at Ki-Be.

135 - Sheridan McDonald (So, 4-0, 3 pins, State Champion) won her second straight title and had no trouble in doing so. Her closest match was an 11-4 win in the quarterfinals. The other three matches ended in pins, two of them in the first round including the title match. Jessica Cooper of Port Angeles had won her first three matches and had not even wrestled out of the first round, recording 3 first round pins. In the final Cooper once again did not wrestle out of the 1st round. This time however, it was because Sheridan recorded the pin at 1:41 of the first round. Sheridan seems to be unmatched in the girls tournament and should make a good run at titles 3 and 4 in the coming years. Sheridan is now 12-0 in the post-season.

BOYS

112 - Travis Roos (Jr, 0-2, 13th) was seemingly dominating his first round match and nearly put his opponent on his back with a cradle in round one, eventually losing a hard fought decision 9-5. Travis was tech'd in his first round consolation match to be eliminated from the tournament. Travis was by far the most improved wrestler on the team and will be a force to be reckoned with next year.

119 - Matt McCallum (Fr, 2-3, 8th) wrestled an outstanding tournament. Taking 8th in this weight class was quite an accomplishment. Matt's 2nd and 3rd round consolation matches were some of his best matches of the year. He held his opponents in those matches to just 2 points total while scoring takedowns and reversals for each win. Winning those matches guaranteed him a medal. His match with Skylor Davis lasted only 45 seconds as he was pinned and then he was pinned in a hard fought 7th-8th place match. Matt will be back to the Mat Classic in the coming years with a good chance to medal high on the podium.

125 - Andy Campbell (Sr, 2-3, 1 pin, 8th) finished off his highschool career in good fashion with a Mat Classic medal. After a 1st round 6-0 loss to Antonio Brown of Orting (Brown finished 2nd in the tournament), Andy pinned his next opponent to create a rematch with Jesse Guerra of Warden. For the second time this post-season, Andy came back to beat an opponent that had beaten him the week before. At regionals it was David Montes of Connell and this time he beat Guerra 10-6. At regionals Guerra had beaten Andy in OT. This win assured Andy of a medal. He then lost two tough matches to finish 8th. Andy's leadership will be missed on the team next year. He finishes his career with 64 wins, 37 of them by pin.

152 - Chris Howell (Jr, 0-2, 13th) was stopped early in his opening match by a pin but came back in the consolation and went the distance with Dillon Jimmie of Nooksack Valley, losing an 8-2 decision. Chris made great strides on the mat this year and if he returns next year, a medal could be in the cards for him. His aggressiveness and desire take a backseat to no one.
