MAT CLASSIC RESULTS

Kiona-Benton Bears - 8th Place

100 - Britnee Cook - 4th, 3-2, 1pin

Britnee won her first two matches to move into the semi-finals. Her pin in the 2nd round was a show stopper. She wrestled tough in the semis but succumbed to a fall, but then wrestled an inspired match in the consolation quarterfinals and won moving on to the consolation finals. She finished up 4th and things look bright for this young wrestler as she continues on in her High School career. She should see some State Finals action before her time is up.

132 - Matthew McCallum - 2nd, 3-1

Matthew breezed through his first two matches winning 13-3 and 9-2 and then wrestled a close match in the semis against Dalton Gonzalez of Castle Rock. A late takedown clinched the win and gave Matthew an 8-5 win and a birth in his second state finals of his career. His opponent was Kit Majors who had pinned him in the 3rd place match last season. Majors recorded the 1st takedown of the match in the first period but Matthew tied it up at 2 with a 2nd round takedown. Majors managed an escape and then was given another escape to start the 3rd which gave him a 4-2 lead. Matthew patiently waited for his opening against Majors, but it never came. With just over a minute left Majors grabbed a single leg on Matthew at the edge of the mat and then quickly, and surprisingly, slid his free hand over Matthew's head and down to his other hand locked onto Matthew's leg, and the ensuing standing cradle ended the match abruptly. Matthew finishes his fine High School career with 2 State Runner-ups and 2 other medals along with his school record 141 wins. He will be greatly missed on the team next year.

138 - Kale Setzer - 7th, 3-2

Kale drew state champion Shannon Maris of Orting in the first round and lasted just 36 seconds before he was pinned. Welcome to Mat Classic! Kale then won a great 2-1 match against his next opponent and then wrestled one of the best matches of the tournament against Zach Moser of Naches Valley. Setzer was on a mission against Moser, a mission to win a medal. He was the aggressor the entire match which turned out to be a rough one for Moser who did not finish the match after a few hard falls on the mat. The match was called with Kale leading 7-5 as Moser could not continue. Kale lost to Diego Hernandez of Zillah before winning the 7th place match. Bigger things are ahead for Kale next year.

170 - Cruz Del Angel - CHAMPION, 4-0, 3pins

Cruz was virtually untouchable this year. He recorded 3 pins and a 9-0 decision in capturing his first state title. His first pin came in 54 seconds and then an oddity from Cruz, a full 6 minute match which was never in doubt, but kudos to Kevin Zettel of Cascade Christian for going the distance with Cruz. This was followed by a 1:23 pin and then a finals pin over Chandler Knight at 46 seconds into the 2nd period with the score tied at 2. Knight had been ranked ahead of Cruz all year long, but Cruz would not be stopped. If you are going to wrestle Cruz, you better be ready to wrestle every moment with no let up. It is in those moments where the other wrestler takes a breather that Cruz strikes and he strikes quick. Just ask Kamiakin State Champ Sisto Santana Pina whom Cruz pinned in 38 seconds at the Bob Mars Tournament to start the year. Or ask Damien Delarosa of Royal, a State runner-up at 182, whom Cruz beat 16-5 during a dual this year. Knight found out that Cruz does not let up. After a near takedown of Cruz, Knight gave up the first takedown of the match but quickly reversed Cruz to tie the score at 2. Cruz chose down for the 2nd period and wasted no time in standing up and grabbing Knight around the head and throwing him to the mat for the pin. Knight was probably in the middle of a rest period, which we already know there is no rest period when wrestling Cruz. A State Championship and a 39-0 record with 24 pins is just the the beginning for Cruz.

195 - Todd Riley - 7th, 3-2

Todd wrestled extremely well during the post-season and a 7th place medal at Mat Classic was a nice reward. Todd lost a close 6-2 match against the eventual champ, Dylan Green of Omak. A few tough matches, winning 7-3 and then going into overtime to win with a takedown gave Riley a medal. Which turned out to be 7th place as he beat Jamison Rice of the team champion Orting Cardinals, 3-1.

220 - Cody Zyph - 4th, 4-2, 2pins

Good things are ahead for Cody next year and his 4th place finish this year is just an indication of how good he can be. With two years remaining, Cody should be challenging for a place in the finals soon. He wrestled John White to a 10-5 loss, White placed 2nd, losing 4-3 in 3 overtimes in the finals. Cody then went on to record a pin, a 12-0 thrashing and a 1:36 pin to move into the 3rd place match. He wrestled well against Bo Russell of Montesano in the 3rd place match, but it was over all to quick with a pin in the 1st round. Watch out for Cody next year!

220 - Dallon Grinder - 9th, 1-2

Dallon wrestled a match for the ages against Alberto Cruz of Wahluke. Trailing 8-0 in an elimination match, a match that would give Dallon a medal, amazing things began to happen. Dallon scored an escape and takedown in the 2nd and then proceeded to record takedown after takedown against an obviously faltering Cruz. It was 9-5, then 10-7, then 10-9, then 11-9, then 11-11 with under 5 seconds remaining, and the Ki-Be crowd went wild. Dallon must have got confused by all the action and without realizing the situation, let Cruz up with just 3 seconds remaining, 12-11 Cruz. He could not get another takedown before time ran out, but boy was it fun to watch a guy give it his all. Dallon will make a name for himself yet!

The team places 8th (tied with Riverside and Stevenson) with 76 points, the second highest State point total in Bears history (84 in 1998). Look for Cruz, Cody, Todd, Kale and Dallon to come back next year joined by some other Bear wrestlers who just missed it this year (Kris Young, Seth Garcia, Seth Matarazzo).
