On to Regionals |
Sergio Avila - 1st - 103 With Richie Zuniga out of action due because of his weight, Sergio rose to the occasion with 2 pins and a tough 6-0 win over Connell's Brad Prather in the semi's. Sergio will have some stiff competition next week against Zabreznik and Limbeck. |
Ale DeLaPena -1st - 125 Ale broke the school record for wins with a pin of Mike Froehlich in his semifinal match, he now has 126 wins with only 8 loses. He has 45 career pins, just one behind Travis Knutson's school record of 46. Troy Stephens will be Ale's competition next week at Regionals. Ale also became the first four time district champion at Ki-Be. |
Joey Isley - 1st -189 Isley looked strong in winning his first district title with an 8-2 decision over Johnny Martinez of Othello. With the "Hogg" move in his arsenal, Joey could surprise some people. Joey has 38 career pins. |
Jesse DeLaPena - 2nd -145 With his pin over Joe Rosencranz of Naches in the second round, Jesse joined brother Ale in the 20 win club for the year. Jesse and Ale are only the second set of brothers to win 20 matches in the same season, the Knutson's did it 3 times. Jesse is currently 21-9 with 11 pins. A second trip to state looks like a lock. |
Angel Mejia - 3rd - 171 Angel lost another tough match to Tyler Critchlow in the semifinals. He came back to win a 2-0 match against 6th place finisher Kevin Luke and then disposed of Josh Moreno with a pin for third place. Angel will have some work to do next week at Wapato in order to get to state. |
Bobby Canales - 3rd - 215 Jason Greene kept Bobby out of the championship with Nathan Zuniga. Greene controlled Bobby for most of their semifinal match. Bobby came back with a 16-4 win over Adrian Lepe of East Valley and got a 1 point win over Jesus Gonzalez of Wapato for third. Bobby also recorded his second straight 20 win season. He is 21-9 this year. |
Josh Corke - 5th - 135 Josh wrestled 6 grueling matches on saturday. All 6 went the distance with the scores being: 8-2, 9-14, 14-4, 4-2, 5-8, 3-2. Corke showed a out of control style at times. The head down bullrush was used unsuccessfully in most cases. Josh's aggressiveness will need to be more focused next week. |
Josh Corriel - 5th - 160 A double leg at the whistle in overtime gave Josh 5th place on saturday. His two wins on the day came against Dennis Carlson of Naches 8-4 and 8-6. Josh will probably have to find a way to beat Sehorn of East Valley if he wants to go to state. Sehorn defeated Josh 9-4 in the consolation semi's. |
Zach Lefevre - 5th - 275 Lefevre lost an early match to upstart Michael Zuniga of Toppenish by pin. Zach fought back and recorded three pins to finish 5th. Zach has a good chance of making it to state if he wrestles next week like he did on saturday. |
Josh Grier - 7th - 189 Grier started the tournament strong with a pin in his first round match. That was followed by 2 losses and 2 more wins by pins for a 7th place finish. Josh has improved greatly this year and looks like a strong contender for next year. He will face a tough task of making it to state this year. Not an impossible task though. |
Cody Roos - 7th - 215 Cody had a good showing as he recorded 3 pins in finishing 7th and advancing to Wapato next saturday. Roos is only a sophomore and should have more success in the future. He will have to pull off some upsets next saturday for a trip to state. |

Other Notes:
Matt Walsh broke his leg in his second match and went to the
hospital. Later in the day he returned
and he and the other wrestlers and fans took turns watching the
video of his leg breaking.
Devin Leavitt, Chris Dehmer, Mark McCullough and Kyle
Nickerson wrestled very well, but came
up just short of advancing. This experience should help each of
them next year.
I will have pictures up later this week.
