Carmen Young's Page

This page is dedicated to the memory of a very special child, Carmen Young, who fought a courageous battle against lung disease. It is thought that Carmen acquired her illness through treatments used to treat her Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). Although, Carmen was very sick, she thought about the needs of others during her time of illness. Carmen spoke openly about organ donor awareness to the media. Through speaking of the need for individuals to discuss organ donation with their families, and to sign organ donor cards; Carmen helped to increase organ donor awareness. In particular she made people aware of the shortage of organs available to paediatric patients. Carmen was sent from the I.W.K Children's Hospital in Halifax to the Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto for further treatment, and to receive a lung transplant. When new lungs could not be found in Toronto, Carmen was sent to the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Carmen fought her battle for almost three years. She never gave up, but unfortunately her wait for a double lung transplant was too long. Carmen passed away at age of 15 years at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She will always be remembered as a special angel, a beautiful child from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, who not only fought for her life, but for the lives of others.

Carmen you will never be forgotten, thanks for teaching us all what the true meaning of courage and love is. Thanks for being you.
