 First-round Italian Open Loss for "Pistol" Pete  Pete Sampras lost in the first round of the Italian
Open to 2-time Roland Garros French Open champion, Jim Courier. Sampras lost to Courier 6-7, 4-6. Sampras says he is now preparing for the French Open which
begins Monday May 26. Getting used to the clay is very important, and the loss enabled him extra training time. Also, although Pete indicated that he intended to
participate in the ATP World Team Cup, he recently pulled out with a thigh injury. The U.S. has just eliminated Croatia from the tournament.
