How to Pray the Rosary

The rosary is a devotional prayer with a long history, honoring Mary the Mother of God. The rosary is said on a string of beads comprised of five decades. Each decade is made up of one large and ten smaller beads. On the large beads the Our Father is said (beads 5,9,10,11 and 12 on picture below) , and on the smaller beads(such as bead 6 below, the Hail Mary is prayed. (For more information on praying the Rosary scroll down to bottom of page)
While saying twenty decades, we meditate on the joyful, luminous, sorrowful or glorious events of Our Lord and Our Lady's life. These twenty events are called the Mysteries of the Rosary.

The Mysteries of the Holy Rosary:

The Joyful Mysteries (usually said on Mondays and Saturdays, and Sundays during the Advent/Christmas season)
1. The Annunciation
2. The Visitation
3. The Nativity
4. The Presentation in the Temple
5. The Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple

The Luminous Mysteries (said on Thursdays)
1. Christ's baptism in the Jordan
2. Christ's self-manifestation at the wedding at Cana
3. Proclamation of the Kingdom of God
4. Transfiguration
5. The Last Supper and institution of the Eucharist.

The Sorrowful Mysteries (usually said on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the year, and daily from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday)
1. The Agony in the Garden
2. The Scouring at the Pillar
3. The Crowning with Thorns
4. The Carrying of the Cross
5. The Crucifixion

The Glorious Mysteries (usually said on Wednesdays and Sundays except as noted above)
1. The Resurrection
2. The Ascension
3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit
4. The Assumption
5. The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

An Example of how the pray the Rosary:
Using the picture and the numbers of the beads below,

1. While holding on to the cross (or position 1) Make the Sign of the Cross and say the "Apostles' Creed."
(see prayer below)

2. While holding on to large bead 2 Say the "Our Father."
(see prayer below)

3. While holding on to each of the three small beads after bead 2 say a "Hail Mary." (Three Hail Marys total) (see prayer below)

4. While holding on to position 4, which is between the last of the three small beads and large bead 5, say the "Glory be to the Father." (see prayer below)

5. While holding onto large bead 5 announce the First Mystery; then say the "Our Father."

6. Skip over position 13. A pray will be said here last

7. Move on to the first of the 10 small bead. While holding on to each of the ten small beads(one at a time) say a "Hail Marys," while meditating on the Mystery.

8. At position 7, which is after the last of the ten small beads but before the next large bead 9, say the "Glory be to the Father."

9. At position 8 which is the same as position 7 say "O My Jesus.." (see prayer below)

10. At position 9 announce the Second Mystery; then say the "Our Father." Repeat 7 and 8 and 9 and then continue with Third, Fourth and Fifth Mysteries in the same manner.

11. After saying all five mysteries you will then say "Hail Holy Queen" pray at position 13. (see prayer below)

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father

Our father, who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Glory be to the Father

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O My Jesus

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fire of hell, take all souls to heaven, and help especially those most in need of Your mercy.

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.
