Students begin their ceramic work by learning about the two basic types of sculpture: additive and subtractive. They also learn about the quality of the clay in different stages and the changes the medium experiences throughout the drying and firing processes.

These are two strong examples of the project "Rattle Box".

After students have mastered the slab method, they then move onto the coil method. Students construct functional vases from various types of coils. They learn about transforming coils by smoothing, scalloping or varying size and shape.

The final lesson in handbuilding involves the use of the pinch method. Students construct a pair of cups and learn about theme as well as functionality.

The student's last step in handbuilding is to construct a teapot using all the building methods they have learned. They read articles such as The Artful Teapot (Clay Times, March 2003) and receive a large amount of inspirational material.

Students may choose to continue lessons beyond handbuilding by studying the potter's wheel. Potter's wheel lessons are also given without handbuilding study. Students begin with very basic cylindrical wheel forms and move onto more advanced functional pieces such as bowls and plates.
