This site was put together as a final project in a Women's Studies course
taken in Fall semester 1996. We chose Women and Slavery in the US
because there was very little information on female slaves on the internet.
The areas we researched are as follows:
- Female Slaves and their Families -
The family structure for slaves was often unstable. This page discusses
female slaves roles in the family structure, and how they coped with problems
that came up.
- Early African-American Feminists - Several
ex-slaves were involved in the female rights movement of the mid-nineteenth
century. This page discusses the backgrounds and activities of a few of
these women.
- From Oppression to Progression - Some
ex-slaves who made it to the North prospered there. This page discusses a
few of the female ex-slaves who prospered in the North.
- Female Slaves & Masters - Female slaves had a
variety of relationships with their masters, ranging from their masters
being benevolent and kind to cruel and punishing. This page discusses some
of these relationships.
We also searched the Web and found a variety of links on the subject
of women and slavery.

They have broken a vast, important, and largely overlooked topic down
into several useful sub-categories, and they provide a fine list of
related links as well. [This site] is a great service in plugging the
gaps in research on this topic at a good introductory level!
