OK, scratch that choice. Too bad for Allen that he was up for re-election in a really bad year for Republicans. After failing to retain his Virginia Senate seat 2008 will be too soon for Allen to sell himself as a national vote-getter. He may bide his time and build his strength within the Party like Newt Gingrich has over the past eight years (not that Allen is an intellectual heavyweight like Newt) and, depending on how the 2008 race shakes out, Allen could be a viable contender in 2012.

2nd choice: Mitt Romney. I'm one Conservative Christian who wouldn't balk at voting for a practicing Mormon, any more than a practicing Catholic or Jew. Romney's Conservative purity will be the test for me.

Couldn’t Bush find any African American miners to kill? Perhaps this indicates invidious and systematic race discrimination by the mining industry. Perhaps Robert Byrd and Trent Lott could co-chair an ad-hoc Senate Committee to investigate.

Boland Amendment Redux?

Why are Democrats filibustering to prevent the U.S. Senate from voting on the Patriot Act? For five years the Democrat strategy has been to obstruct anything President Bush tries to do; but there may be something more sinister in this latest obstruction. Here is my theory:

Most Senate Democrats know perfectly well that the Patriot Act is not only necessary to homeland security, but that none of the abuses that critics worry about have occurred. So why would Democrats be willing to risk a terror attack against the U.S. by handcuffing our intelligence efforts? Because they don't believe that President Bush will risk a terror attack.

In the 1980's Democrats used the Budget process to prevent President Reagan from helping the Nicarauguan Contras against the Communist Sandanista government, and as a result the Iran-Contra scandal occurred, weakening the Reagan presidency. In fact, Democrats could almost taste a repeat of Watergate, and were flustered when Ollie North famously turned the tables on them.

So, what's Iran-Contra got to do with the Patriot Act? Just this: by letting the Patriot Act expire, Democrats are hoping to tempt Bush into carrying on the intel operations that were practiced under the authority of the Patriot Act, but which are now illegal. When Bush takes the bait -- so their fantasy goes -- the Democrats will finally have the noose with which to end the "illegitimate" Bush Presidency and sweep into power again, just like 1974.

The best part is that, if Bush continues the now-illegal Patriot Act activities, there will be no terror attack for the Dems to be blamed for, and once Democrats are restored to ruling Party status they can take whatever measures they deem necessary to protect the homeland. But, for Democrats it's first things first.

Remember how the media promoted Post-Partum Depression after Andrea Yates drowned her own children. Then there was everybody-lies-about-sex to cover for Bill Clinton, and before that there was Road Rage.

Now, with the shooting of a “Bi-Polar” man by a Federal Air Marshall, we can count on a surge in media mentions of Bi-Polar Disorder, in anticipation of which I want to suggest the ideal Bi-Polar Disorder Poster Child: Howard Dean.

Reid must apologize to the amigos

If it was thirty years ago, no one would suggest that Senate Minority Leader, Harry Reid, was motivated by racism or insensitivity to Hispanic-Americans when he promised to vote “No” on the John Roberts Supreme Court confirmation; but surely, in this day and age, a leading Democrat elected official like Reid should know that “No” is Spanish for “No.” It is inexcusable for the Minority Leader of the United States Senate to engage in such racially insensitive rhetoric. Reid should apologize to all the amigos.

Political Genius


Karl Rove is a political genius. Rove knew that Democrats would rise to the bait, and they didn't disappoint him.

Rove's remarks at a Conservative Party of New York fundraiser would normally go completely unreported, so Rove decided to borrow the Floors of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, and the Mainstream Media airwaves to get his message out.

If there is anything that ignites Liberal ire it is blowing their cover on matters of National Security, and that is precisely what Rove did. He elegantly capsulized the difference between Conservatives and Liberals as follows: "after 9/11 Conservatives prepared for war, while Liberals prepared subpeonas."

Result: Liberal hysteria, ergo nationwide media attention, and a national debate about whether Democrats or Republicans are more fit to conduct a War against America's mortal Islamist enemies. That is an argument that Democrats just can't win. Karl Rove has baited Democrats into having that debate.

Wither the Protestors?

I must have missed the MoveOn.org protestors, bearing signs reading, "NEWSWEEK LIED, PEOPLE DIED," and demanding the resignations of reporter Michael Isakoff and all the Editors of Newsweek.

For the record

Just to get this on the record, my pick for GOP Presidential nominee for 2008 is Virginia's junior Senator, former Virginia Governor, and recently successful Chair of the NRSC, George Allen.

Who needs a crutch?

All my life I've been told by people much "wiser" than myself, that Atheists are strong-minded people, and religion is merely a crutch for people who don't have the gumption to stand up on their own. But, as I've followed the recent hysteria by Atheists about prayers before high school football games, crosses on city seals, the ten commandments in a courtroom, "under God" in the pledge of allegiance, and prayer and the bible at the presidential inauguration, I find that the evidence doesn't reconcile with the strong-Atheist/weak-Christian conventional wisdom.

For two millennia, Christians have called upon their God, and received strength to endure the most awful torments and persecutions, yet it appears that Atheists are reduced to a quivering mass of gelatin at the mere sight of a bible, or the sound of the G-word.

If I was a young man, making life-choices about what course would bring me power for living, I would be loathe to embrace the Atheist's creed, seeing it fails so pitifully to bring succor in time of discomfort -- much less time of actual trial.
