Gourd ProjectThe Waterbearer

Provided by Alice

THE WATERBEARER WAS INSPIRED BY THE POEM "THE CRACKED POT". ANY CHARACTER CAN BE MADE THIS WAY, A MAESTRO, CLOWN, TIGHTROPE WALKER, GRADUATE, CLERGY, ETC.
GEE, THERE'S JUST NOT ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY FOR GOURDERS.

15 GOURD PARTS WERE USED, INCLUDING...... STRAIGHT DIPPER LEGS, CURLY DIPPER ARMS, PENGUIN BODY/TUNIC, HAT, DIPPER POLE, CLAY FEET, HANDS, AND BEARD AND MINI GOURDS FOR CANTEENS. A WOOD BASE AND 2 DOWELS ARE ALSO USED.

START WITH A WOODEN BASE. THE STRUCTURE IS HELD TOGETHER WITH DOWELS THAT RUN FROM BASE ( DRILL HOLE TO INSERT DOWEL ) THRU ONE FOOT ( HOLE IS NEEDED IN BOTTOM OF FOOT ) THRU COMPLETE BODY/TUNIC, TO THE HOLE IN BOTTOM OF THE NECK. THE OTHER DOWEL NEED ONLY REACH WAIST OF STRUCTURE.

THE BASE IS PAINTED TO TELL THE STORY OF THE POEM.....IF YOU WOULD LIKE A COPY OF THE POEM THAT INSPIRED THIS JUST SEND REQUEST TO ALYOOP123@WEBTV.NET

NOTICE ONE DOWEL IS LONGER TO FIT INTO NECK BOTTOM OF HEAD.IF YOU CAN FIND A GOURD WITH HEAD AND BODY AS ONE PIECE IT WILL MAKE YOUR CREATION EASIER ,BUT MAYBE NOT AS MUCH FUN...LOL

FORM FOOT WITH CLAY ( I USED CRAYOLA MODELING MAGIC ) REMEMBERING TO LEAVE OR MAKE A HOLE FOR DOWEL. HEMP CORD SANDALS.

CHAIN STITCHED HEMP CORD GLUED AROUND PERIMETER OF FOOT...BE SURE TO HAVE CLAY GO UP INTO LEG..SANDAL STRAP HIDES CONNECTION OF FOOT TO LEG.OTHER TYPE SANDALS CAN BE MADE OF LEATHER,BURLAP ETC:

PANT LEGS

WELL, HE'S FINALLY GETTING HIS PANTS ON.....LOL LEGS ARE STRAIGHT DIPPER GOURDS.PANTS ARE BANANA GOURDS.

Gourd Body

BODY/TUNIC

PLACE TUNIC ON WOOD FOR BASE, TRACE AROUND TUNIC..CUT WOOD TO FIT..SOME SANDING HELPS TO GET A GOOD FIT..DON'T SECURE TILL YOU DRILL HOLES IN IT FOR PANT LEGS TO FIT INTO IT.IF ADORNING BOTTOM OF TUNIC DO IT BEFORE ADDING WOODEN DISC.THIS GUY HAS HOLES DRILLED IN HIS TUNIC AND PANT LEGS WITH ARTIFICIAL SINEW WOVEN AROUND IT..TUNIC AND PANTS WERE MEDIUM BROWN,LEATHER DYED, THEN SANDED LIGHTLY TO GIVE AN OLD LOOK TO THE FABRIC.. PLACE ARM ON TUNIC SECTION, DRAW AROUND IT.ETCH A GROOVE FOR IT TO FIT,POUR SOME E 6000, SET ARM TILL DRY AND SECURE.. THEN COVER WITH WOOD PATCH KEEPING FINGERS WET AND SMOOTHING TO ELIMINATE TOO MUCH SANDING..

Gourd HandHAND ON POLE

CLAY HAND/FINGERS ON POLE.A BETTER IDEA WOULD BE TO HAVE A CIRCULAR ARMATURE THAT POLE OR BAMBOO POLE CAN SLIDE IN AND OUT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE TO PACK OR MOVE IT..NATURALLY I DIDN'T THINK OF THAT WITH THIS ONE. FOR GOOD BALANCE HAVE POLE SAME LENGTH AS HEIGHT OF FINISHED STRUCTURE. FOR THIS CHARACTER, WATER POT WITHOUT CRACK WOULD HANG LOWER FROM WEIGHT OF WATER.

ALL I NEED IS MY HAT AND I'M DONE

TOP OF HAT

IF YOU CAN'T GET THE EXACT SHAPE GOURD FOR YOUR HAT, A FOUND OBJECT, WITH POINTY TOP, SUCH AS AN ACORN, WHICH I'LL BE USING, COULD BE USED TO CREATE A POINT ON TOP OF HAT..NOT NECESSARY BUT ADDS MORE INTEREST. .CAN'T YOU SEE A CLOWN OR MAESTRO PUT TOGETHER THIS WAY..OR A MAD SCIENTIST.

CRACKED POT

COYOTE GOURD OVERLAPPED WITH MASKING TAPE FOR ADDED STRENGTH..WATER IS FISHING LINE WITH E 6000 GLUE DRIPPED DOWN.. GLUE SMELLS AWFUL WHEN DOING IT BUT IS QUITE REALISTIC IN PERSON. A LARGER PIECE OF CELLOPHANE WOULD WORK WELL TOO.PAINT INSIDE OF POTS TO LOOK LIKE WATER, POUR IN SOME GLUE TO MAKE IT LOOK WET.... TWO NICE THICK GOURDS WOULD ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR THE MASKING TAPE....ALSO, FOR A PUDDLE ON THE BASE THE E 6000 WORKS WELL.HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL.IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS JUST YELL MY WAY.ALYOOP123@WEBTV.NET
