GAMES OF THE 90'S

MONOPOLY (ABC 1990) Three contestants competed to collect properties by answering crossword-type clues beginning with the key letter for each block.

After the group of properties were claimed, a player could create a monopoly stealing properties through toss-up questions.

When the 8 sections were said & done, during commercial, the landlords would build houses or hotels ($50 per house/$250 per hotel). Then a 5 minute game was played as the hostess tossed the dice & started moving aound the board.

Other than Community Chest & Chance, If landing on a property, the landlord gets first crack to solve the crossword clue. If wrong, the opponents could steal that rent money.

ELECTRIC COMPANY/WATER WORKS Toss up question played for 100X the roll of the dice.

RAILROAD Contestant that answered toss-up could go to an opponent's monopoly & stealing it by answering 3 (or 2) puzzles right. If successful, that player gets that monopoly. If not, the player loses the value to the landlord.

INCOME TAX 10% of the players' cash on hand was placed in Free Parking.

LUXURY TAX $75 was deducted & placed in Free Parking.

GO TO JAIL Hostess locked up contestants. WRONG! Nothing happened, just pay the $50 fine which would be placed in Free Parking.

FREE PARKING Contesant answering toss-up question won the money in Free Parking (Started @ $500).

When that round's over, the landlords cashed in their houses & hotels. Whoever had the most money won the game.

The bonus round had the contestant tossed the dice trying to go around the block with 5 rolls of the dice (doubles earned an extra roll). $100 was paid per square passed & if the player passed Go without landing on one of the 5 Go To Jails, that player won $25,000! Nobody ever won $50,000 for exactly landing on GO.

MEMORIES:

Host Mike Reilly was a Jeopardy! contestant.

The theme song (with lyrics) were written by Merv Griffin & Mort Lindsey.

Would've been better if there had been a jail cell.

CAESAR'S CHALLENGE (NBC 1993-94) Taped @ Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ahmad Rashad (NBC Sports) hosted the last NBC daytime game show.

Using a slot machine, contestants answered questions to solve a scrambled up word to win more money. 3 rounds were played. Round 1 had 7-letter words each letter paying $100, Round 2; 8-letter words paying $200 a letter & Round 3; 9-letter words paying $300 a letter.

There's also a "lucky slot". When someone inserted the right letter into the lucky slot, they would get an additional $500 bonus if the played guessed the word. If the lucky slot wasn't won, it would grow $500 a word. However, when time runs out, the lucky slot was out of play.

The contestant with the most money won the game & played Caesar's Challenge.

The first bonus game had a cage of 200 letters. The balls were dropped & when a 9-letter certified dictionary word was chosen... (GONG) "CAESAR SAYS STOP!" The contestant then can move a letter(s) & then had 10 seconds to guess the word for a new car!

The second bonus game had the contestant guess five scrambled up words in 30 seconds. Word one had 5 letters, Word 2; 6 up to Word 5; 9. This bonus was a failure because only one old man manage to win the car!

MEMORIES:

Ahmad's assistant was gladiator Dan Doherty. One episode he was caught soaking in a hot tub.

One episode had a contestant that looked exactly like Bob Costas.

Another episode had a contestant that took the show hitting every lucky slot, winning a total of $20,700 + a new car!

VIDEO POWER (Synd. 1991-92) This show started in 1990 as a video game magazine for tips, game reviews & a cartoon (The Power Team). In 1991, the show switched to the game show format.

4 kids were selected to try to stump "Johnny Arcade" (Stivi Paskoski) asking video game questions. Then those kids would compete in a video game showdown for 2:02. The top 2 players moved on to the q&a round. 5 questions were asked (the first 4 for points, the 5th for a prize). Then they would battle it out again for 1:01. The winner got to go grab prizes in the Video Game Mall for 41 seconds.

The daily winners came back on Friday to determine the weekly champ. The weekly chanps battled it out for the ultimate prize; a $10,000 college fund, a trophy & a family trip to Universal Studios, Florida.

MEMORIES: Women's lib occurred on this show. Two boys & two girls battled playing a football video game & (pardon my Gomer Pyle) SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE! The girls beat the boys!

WHEEL 2000 (CBS 1997-98) This children's version of the classic game was ok. Although they played for points & only won prizes. They also talked about the puzzles after the round (The E/I element).

The wheel had a stunt space where kids did stunts to earn up to 3 letters. LOSER (Lose A Turn) & my favorite; THE CREATURE! {Monster growl, HA HA HA!} (Bankrupt).

Yes, I liked Cyber Lucy (Tanika Ray).
