S. R. Thompson, 1828 ~ 1908. S. R. Thompson, born December 7, 1828 and died July 13, 1908 Lawrence County, KY. Samuel was the first child born to Russell Thompson and Fanny Nelson. He was married on January 8, 1849 to Emma Ritta Thompson, a daughter of Richard Thompson and Mahala Ball. Sam and Emma Ritta built a small cabin on land situated on the Fern Branch fork of the left fork of Little Blaine Creek in Lawrence County and lived here for most of their adult lives. As their family grew in size, additional space was added and the small cabin eventually became a house of four rooms. This little cabin withstood the elements of time and nature but could not withstand the carelessness of man and was burn to the ground in 1929/39. Remnants of the fireplace remained when my father and I visited the location in 1975. Following the death of Emma Ritta, Samuel married on March 7, 1881 to Angeline (Thompson) Moore, widow of David Moore and daughter of Samuel Thompson and Sarah Waller. The following appeared in the Big Sandy News at Samuel's death: "Uncle Sam Thompson was buried Tuesday of last week in the old Thompson graveyard on the farm of his boyhood days. He was about 82 years old, had lived a long and useful life, had been one of the best citizens in the entire county. With one exception, he was the oldest of the entire Thompson family in this county. Had been a sober, industrious man and served his country well. He lived a christian life for 50 or 60 years. He leaves a wife, several children, and hosts of friends and relatives to mourn their loss." Samuel is now buried in the Yatesville Memorial Cemetery. He was my great grandfather.
