History

First opened in 1958, Robert E. Lee High School is located in Springfield, Va., a  residential suburb of Washington, D.C.  The community has high expectations for its youth and gives strong support to the school and its programs. These same  expectations and strong parental support continue today.
The school reflects the goals of the community as it holds high academic expectations for all students and, at the same time, provides programs to meet the increasing cultural diversity of the student population.
Lee's 1770 students, speaking 45 languages and hailing from more than 40 countries, reflect the cultural diversity of the metropolitan area.  Over 83 percent of Lee's graduating classes continue their education beyond high school. SAT scores are above the national average. In 1997, Lee had 4 commended students in the National Merit Program, 2 finalists and 1 National Merit Scholar. In 1997, over 50 seniors were awarded the President's Award of Academic Excellence and record numbers were named to the "All A" and "A/B" honor rolls.

Program Emphasis
These programs prepare students to be successful in a constantly changing world and to pursue advanced educational and vocational plans.
Student achievement is rewarded through incentive programs such as the principal's All "A" Honor Roll luncheon.
The integration of technology into the instructional program continues to be a major initiative.  All instructional disciplines make extensive use of the school s two multimedia computer labs. Other computer skills are developed through Lee's three levels of computer graphics and the technical drawing and engineering classes, which make use of a fully computerized CAD lab. A second initiative is the wiring of the entire high school to network all school computers.
Another initiative this year is the implementation of a block, college like schedule. After a year of study and preparation, the faculty and staff have implemented a schedule that will expand the instructional time in classes by alternating the days each class meets. Teachers and students will be assessing the impact that an extended class period will have on instruction, attendance, and student performance.
The continued emphasis on maintaining positive communications with parents is addressed through mini-conferences, orientation programs, newsletters, and special parent evenings. Parent volunteers are highly visible in the building and on the school governance council.
In a cooperative effort to maintain the high level of student achievement and sense of community, the faculty, staff, and parents continue to examine programs, review data, and assess the school s mission of preparing students for their futures and helping them develop lifelong learning skills.
