Gone over chapter 8b.
Would like to redo the audio-files, but don't seem to find time to devote to these files any more. Time just flies.

November 27/2005

Updated Chapter 8 a. And the relevant grammar files.

I've also corrected a few mistakes, mostly typing errors, but one rather awful mistaken tense identity. ἐγένετο is obviously not present perfect but aorist. My excuse is that at the time of creating this page I hadn't really come to grips with Greek verbs yet, having only been playing around with ancient Greek for a few months.
I started learning Greek in April 2000, in a chat-room. Since most other people seemed to have great difficulties remembering words and structures I thought I'd get together a few help-files. I learnt html programming (I like doing things the hard way), the original few help-files turned into a web-site and as a result I spent more time preparing these pages than actually learning more Greek. Because these pages were first produced before I'd even finished the whole course myself, there were bound to be mistakes. I hoped somebody might point them out to me so that I could correct them and learn something myself. Unfortunately nobody ever did, except for drawing my attention to a few minor typing errors.
When I'd finished the course I started going over my pages. I had corrected as far as chapter 8 when my computer crashed and I lost all. It has taken me till now to proof-read these first 8 chapters, which, I hope, are all correct now. If they are not, would someone please tell me.
September 9/2005
I have gone over some more grammar files and updated Chapter 6 a and b.
Have not had much time for Athenaze these last few months, so progress has been rather slow. Again.
April 18/2005
I am now, finally, in the process of changing all of my pages from Spionic to Unicode.
I've gone over most of the grammar section as well as Athenaze section A (chapters 1a to 5b), changing the font, adding more notes and correcting mistakes. And have started work on section B. I'll upload chapter by chapter, replacing old by new, as I go along.
May 27/2003
I decided to go over my pages, putting in some necessary corrections and trying, by using style sheets, to give the whole a consistent look, bold Spionic in IE 5.5 and higher, normal in all other browsers. I also added some more pages on terminology and grammar and split some pages I thought were too long into 2 or 3. But didn't upload any to my site because there was far too much linking-up to be done before. And then the unthinkable happened: my second hard disk, the one with all my Greek on, crashed. And I had no recent back-up: all the work I'd done between January and May - I'd re-done all of the first 8 lessons - lost in one fell swoop.
I'll eventually get things straightened out again, question is: When? This time I'll be more careful and back-up as I go along.
November 18/2002 I thought I'd found a way to eliminate those stupid blank spaces Internet Explorer insists on inserting into Greek words: by using bold type. So started going over my pages using bold. Not all that pretty I find. But effective, or so I thought...
But when I looked at my handiwork on my laptop, in IE6 using WinXP, the awful spaces were back. So I suppose I'll have to eventually drop Spionic and use Unicode, which means re-typing most of my work. Not a very happy prospect.
Have uploaded some of my changed pages, should there be any broken links, just let me know.
August 17/2002 Am in the process of reorganizing. So if some links don't work properly, please let me know.
I've also done some work on all remaining lessons. But it all takes time. I'll get there in the end.
January 01/2002 I haven't had much time lately for Greek pages, so progress has been rather slow.
Finished lesson 11a, and did a bit of work on 11b to 15a.
And I've again added a download page where all the lesson files and audio-files for the lessons 1a to 10b inclusive can be downloaded as self-extracting archives.
August 05/2001 Most of lesson 11a (including recording and grammar pages for
Aorist tense (simple past) and aorist infinitive
Aorist imperative and participle introduced in lesson commentary but no pages in grammar yet)
July 12/2001 I use HTML for my pages and do quite a bit of cutting/copying and pasting of tables (to save time) and then delete old and insert new. A little inattention is enough for funny things to appear on the page. I've corrected the funnies on the "imperfect tense" pages. And added some more information, and exercises.

June 10/2001 Uploaded lessons 9b and 10a
May 11/2001 I haven't had much time lately, so progress has been rather slow. Plus the fact that I lost most of the work done on lesson 9a when I tried to be specially ingenious and copied it all to folder 9b as templates. Only hickup, I didn't copy but moved, and lost about 5 hours' work in the process.
Well, I've redone lesson 9a and am finally ready to put it up.
April 11/2001 I've had no end of trouble with reorganizing my sites. Yes, Tripod.com finally answered my e-mails saying that it had all been a mistake and apologizing for the inconvenience. Well, by that time I'd updated some files, moved things around on my computer and on-line, got rid of all reference to tripod.com, thrown out most of my audio-files. And then, like a deus ex machina, all my files (un-updated) were back on tripod, audio-files and all. So now I'm in the process of re-reorganizing, which takes time and nervous energercy. I can't just copy all updated material automatically from one site to the other because one has references to audio and the other hasn't, which means that overwriting one with the other results in loss of audio on one site, and broken links (to non-existent) material on the other. And the problems caused by Spionic and IE5.5 detract from my main objective: give help with lessons in the Athenaze book. So patience is the motto. I have gone over lessons 6, 7 and 8. Though I have not totally finished with lesson 8b yet But have done a bit of work on 9a to compensate.
March 20/2001 Went over lesson 7a
repaired little mishap in the sheep and goat declension
March 17/2001 Removed audio-files from lesson 3 onward and re-uploaded lessons 1a to 8b
March 16/2001 In Pronunciation added a page on alphabetical order in Greek dictionaries

Tripod.com can't be bothered to give me an explanation.
I re-read their terms of service very carefully and found out that they can close down sites without warning and without having to give any reasons.
Had I read that before, PROPERLY, I might have thought twice before signing on.
I thought it over and decided that it must have had something to do with bandwidth, and with my many audio-files taking up too much space. I can't think of any other reason. So I'm moving files back onto this Planeta site but will eliminate most of my audio-files. So as to prevent any further problems. And also because space is at a premium here.
Lesson notes will have to have references to audio-files removed before being brought back into circulation. A day or two should suffice. So, patience!

March ?/2001 Tripod.com cancelled my pages without giving any reasons. I'd stay away from free websites offered by Tripod.com. No warning, no explanation, no reply to enquiries. What crime could I possible be guilty of? If you know, let me know.
March 7/2001 Went over Lesson 6a and links to try and make them IE5.5 compatible.
And corrected minor flaws
03/04/2001 Lesson 8b words and expressions.
Cardinal and ordinal numbers.
Reading of supplementary text.
03/03/2001 Finished the section on Pronunciation (for the time being)
Computer problem and frustration with ancient Greek fonts are responsible for the delay in updating this site. I've given up on fonts, they behave strangely according to which browser one is using. Spionic works on both Mac and PC (a rarity) but will not print out properly in IE5.5 (insists on inserting blank spaces). Use Netscape or Opera or previous versions of Internet Explorer to make print-outs.
01/12/2001 Went over lessons 2 and 3 (complete)
and linked pages
Am still trying to fix the incompatibility IE 5.5 and Spionic. Empty spaces appearing in Greek words where there shouldn't be any. Removing all ' and - marks in the same line as Spionic Greek seems to do the trick, but it is a long job trying to find and patch up all instances. English words that should be hyphenated will be hyphen-less in future. And some punctuation marks will have to go.
Netscape is fine, though, and prints much better.
01/07/2001 Lesson 8b: translation, audio and word-building
Went over lesson 1 (a and b) for IE 5.5 flaw
01/05/2001 Finished lesson 8a (Words after translations of paragraphs. What's New section dealt with)
Corrected an error regarding πλεῖν in lesson 6a.
Contracts ONLY when  ε  meets  ε  and changes into ει. Sorry, silly mistake. We do not πλοῦμεν but we πλέομεν.
12/27/2000 Lesson 8a introduction, translation of text and audio-files
12/25/2000 Links Page
12/24/2000 Pronunciation Section (first steps)
dec 23/2000 This page
before dec23/2000 Athenaze files sort of complete up to lesson 8 (exclusive).
Download files also up to lesson 8 (exclusive). I'm going to discontinue those for the time being, the audio-files working fine on my site now. I shall resume them later on though.
