This filet crochet design is designed for the Cancrochet Bookmark exchange for the Cancrochet mailing list found at Onelist.com. Cancrochet's weblink is: http://jim.southcom.com.au/~sandi/. It incorporates the use of ch-1 spaces instead of the traditional ch-2 spaces and uses the "Relief Stitch" technique too. :)

Materials: Aunt Lydia's Crochet cotton thread, size 10 (natural)
Crochet hook, size 8/1.50MM

Stitch Notes:
*FRST (Front Relief Stitch): 4 dc in st or sp, remove hook after 4th dc is completed and insert into 1st of the 4 dcs just made (front to back), pick up dropped loop and pull thru; dc in next dc.
*BRST (Back Relief Stitch): Work same as FRST but inset hook from back to front, pick up dropped loop and pull thru; dc in next dc.
* Work odd-numbered rows right to left
* Work even-numbered rows left to right

Ch 21.
Row 1: (Right side) Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (3 skipped chs count as 1 dc) (19 dc). Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: 1 dc in each of next 2 dc (1 block completed), * ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc (1 space completed), repeat from * 6 times more; 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Ch 3, turn (1 block, 7 sts, 1 block).
Row 3: 1 dc in each of next 2 dc (1 block completed), ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc (1 sp completed), 1 FRST in next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 3 times, 1 FRST in next sp, ch 1, dc in next dc, 2 dc in each of last 2 dcs. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 3 - 46: Continue according to chart. On the even rows, you will be working BRST stitches instead of FRST stitches-this keeps all the popcorn-type stitches on one side of the bookmark. At the end of Row 46, turn so that right side is facing. Do not fasten off but work edging.

Note:On the even rows, you will be using the BRST (Back Relief Stitch). In other words, you will be having the bumps all on the same side of the bookmark. The BRST and the FRST are basically popcorn stitches. :)

Edging
Rnd : Ch 1, sl st in next dc, (skip 3 dcs, 6 dc in next dc=shell made, skip 3 dc, sl st in next dc) 2 times; working along side of rows, shell in 1st row, sl st in next row, (dc, ch 2, dc=V-Stitch made, in next row, sl st in next row), ending with a V-Stitch in 2nd to last row and a shell in last row. If you end up with a sl st in 2nd to last row, that's okay--just do a shell in the last row of side. Work remaining 2 sides to correspond. Join to beg sl st and fasten off. Sew in ends and press lightly....just letting the weight of the iron do the work (using steam helps too)--you don't want to squish your relief stitches. ;)
