HS LIM's PALM III PAGE

My Favourites / My Resources

I got my Palm III on 18th December 1998. It was not a deliberate decision to buy. I was in fact shopping for a scanner. I ended getting the scanner and the Palm III. At the time I bought my Palm III (by 3COM), I was not aware of its popularity until after I bought it and started to check for sources of information.

After using Palm III for a few days, I was badly hooked. I spend the next few weeks looking around for software and accessories for my Palm III. I register so many software for my Palm III. I kept shopping and drop in often at DOML International Pte Ltd.

I am living in Singapore and the details below are to assist those living in Singapore. Since I own a Palm III, I will refer to Palm III. The information below could apply to others in the family but please check. Note that different OS could cause problems too.

Note that I include graphics whenever possible as pictures can tell you more. This leads to a long loading time as I include everything in just this one page and do not wish to separate it into separate pages. It makes it easier to print for anyone who wish to print and refer to it later.

Note that in all images below, you can use left-click-view to see the full graphic, then use the Back button (or whatever).

In Association with Amazon.com I have purchased the following books and recommend them. They can be purchased at Amazon.COM. Click on the logo on the left to proceed to their home page, or click on the book graphic to check out the individual book or to check reviews of others who had also purchased the book.

PalmPilot Resource Kit by Glenn Brown
This was the first resource kit I bought after reading various reviews. Recommended.

Bought this at Computer Book Centre at Funan Centre. If not avaliable here, they are always available at Amazon.COM.

The Complete PalmPilot Guide by Calvin O Parker
Bought the book after checking out his website. Recommended.

Bought this at Clementi Book Store at Clementi. If not avaliable here, they are always available at Amazon.COM.

PalmPilot: The Ultimate Guide by David Pogue
Purchased this from Amazon.COM. Read and love it. Strongly recommended.

If you ever want just one book, this should be THE BOOK.

Palm Programming: The Developer's Guide by Neil Rhodes, Julie McKeehan, Mark Stone (Editor)
Purchased this from Amazon.COM. After going though the book briefly, it became clear that unless you know C programming, this book is definitely not for you. Discussion is mainly for developing Palm III programs using C.

Other PalmPilots or Palm III books are also avaliable at AMAZON.com if you are unable to get them locally.

What hardware and accessories?

Most of these can be bought at DOML International Pte Ltd at Funan Centre, 5th floor.

Palm III HotSync Cradle for Windows
You should have bought this when you bought your PalmIII.
PalmPilot Modem
I bought this together with software so I could download my email whereever I may be.
8 MB Memory Upgrade
If you are serious, get a memory upgrade immediately! You can upgrade from Palm III's 2Mb memory to 8 Mb memory using Superpilot Memory Board II XL from Technology Resource Group. After just one week, I found 2MB too small!
Palm III Stylus (3 pak)
You might want extra stylus in case you lose them. It comes in three styli per pack. Note that these stylus are for Palm III.
Double III
I just love these pens! You can use it as a stylus, a black ball point pen or a mechanical pencil. The design is most attractive. I have about 10 of these! I may get more!

From Concept Kitchen

  • WriteRight Screen Protectors: To protect Palm III touch screen. I make my own transparent plastic before I got this. I prefer this.

  • Brain Wash: To wipe and clean the touch screen. Does not feel different from other kind of alcohol I use. Better use a good grade as some alcohol has debris which may scratch the touch screen. Cotton wool may leave fibres stuck on the touch screen. Brain Wash comes in two packs, 1 and 2. 1 is wet and contains alcohol. 2 is like a cloth and wipes away the alcohol. I kept 2 for other use as the quality is very high and soft, and can stand re-use.

  • Karma Cloth: To wipe clean the touch screen. So far I have not used this although I have bought it as part of a pack.

but then you may not want these although I do recommend them.....

  • Belt Clip Leather Case
Bought one of it, in case I need to use it.
Palm III Slim Leather Case from 3Com
Bought this when I first bought my Palm III. I am not using this currently.
Fully Enclosed, Palm size Wallet Case with simultaneous access to Pilot and Note pad from Devian Enterprise
Bought one of it and using it now. Although I like this casing, the bulk makes it difficult to carry it in your pocket.

There are other accessories and you can see them at the webpage of DOML International Pte Ltd.

    What software?

Listed below are all my registered software. These are software I feel that it is worth registering. In the case of games, I register them as they appeal to me, you may have your own ideas.

    Star Pilot from Star-Pilot Technologies
    (Astronomy/US$30.00)
This is an astronomy software. Astronomy is one of my hobby. I had it configured for the Singapore sky. Included are J-Moons! (Jupiter Moons), Moon! and Sun!.

    Can be bought at PalmPilotGear.

App Usage from Benc Software Production
    (Utilities/US$12.50)
I take this as a utility rather than an application. It can keep track of all software in your Palm III and the number of times you used it. It can be used to capture what programs are in your PalmIII into the Memo, then upload to your PC. This list can be kept for reference.

    Can be bought at PalmPilotGear.

PalmIII Convertor Pro from Zing Ware
    (Utilities/US$20.00)
Scientific calculator. Just thought I need one, although I have so many others on my Palm III.

    Can be bought at PalmPilotGear.

Thesaurus & Spell Checker from DDH Software
    (Application/US$15.00)

Hangman and Wheel of Fortune from DDH Software
    (Games/US$12.00)
Still enjoyed playing this word game. Never got tired of it. I bought both together rather than separately.

Can be bought at DDH Software.

    JFile from Land-J Technologies
    (Application/US$19.95)
This database program came strongly recommended by a fellow Palm III. After checking it it out, I decide it is worth it.

You can define your own database fields and enter your own data.

    Can be bought at PalmPilotGear.

Teal Doc from Teal Point Software
    (Application/US$16.95)
A program which DOC files. Since there are many DOC files which I like to keep in my Palm III, I decide to buy it. Teal Point Software produce many other great software like TealEcho, TealGlance, TealInfo, TealLock, TealMagnify, TealMeal, TealPaint and TealScript. I like to get a few others. Problem is individually the price are affordable but when you get all the various software you like, the cost accumulate and becomes prohibitive. Besides, I only use TealDoc frequently, the rest almost never at all. I may get others at a later date when I use them more often.

Can be bought at Kagi Online under the Tealpoint Software page.

    GadgetHack from GadgetHack
    (Utilities/US$4.95)
A utility that require Hackmaster to work. GadgetHack uses the title of your application to set up "modes" that you can use to get information from your Palm device.

Xiang plays Chinese Chess on the Palm III.

    Can be bought at PalmPilotGear.

    FireEscape (Game) by headRush
To save falling babies from a burning building.

I love this game. The babies are real cute. They look real cute tumbling too. This game take me to the days when hand-held games first came out. There many versions of it. You only need to move it left and right for some purpose. It gets real wild when you need to catch more and more stuff coming towards you.

    Can be bought at PalmPilotGear.

Get all your frogs safely home in this re-creation of the arcade classic Frogger.

The game of MasterMind. Used to like the game when it first came out.

    TealInfo (Application) by Tealpoint Software

DB Explorer (Utilities) by Katsuhiro Endo
Allows you to browse the Pilot databases and applications. Show memory usage and details. Modify name, type, etc. Quicker than built-in Memory apps.

I found this utility very, very useful, particularly for seeing what is in my Palm III and deleting programs. Of course, there is the accidental wrong deletion but as I backup my software, this does not bother me.

Sales Tracker from David's Pilot Page

If your shortcuts take ages to load and edit, run this utility to fix the problem.

    What other software to consider?

I am currently evaluating some of these software below and will consider registering them when either I can spare the cash or when I used it often enough to find it invaluable. I am likely to remove most of them. Then again, I find them appealing enough not to discard them immediately.

Note that opinions expressed here are my own and I will change my opinion if I can be convinced otherwise when I received more info. You are free to disagree with me.

    TealPaint (Application/US$17.95) by Tealpoint Software
Unmatched in features, performance, and usability, TealPaint is the most feature-packed paint and sketch program on the Pilot, offering horizontal and vertical scrolling, animation, custom buttons, compression, 16 drawing tools, 16 patterns, and 12 brushes. Features magnified draw, grid snap, ovals, text, screen-grab, and more. Includes Windows 95 import, export, and print utility.

Not likely to register. The Palm III is not really suitable for graphics and the graphics is really poor.

    Cesium (Application/US$7.00) by Andrew Ball
Award-winning large-digit clock and timing software. Features a large digit clock with multiple world time zones, alarm with snooze feature, 10 really annoying alarm sounds and a host of other useful features, a countdown timer with AutoRepeat and a stopwatch.

Not likely to register although it is an excellent clock as I usually leave my Palm III off and use the real clocks or my watch. The alarm is too soft to be heard by me.

    Multiclock (Application/US$10.00) by PalmAdd
multiClock is a multi-function digital alarm clock. It displays the time in large, easy to read digits. Features include: three programmable alarms with selectable snooze function and different alarm types, 10 different alarm sounds with adjustable number of rings and pause, auto-snooze for repeating alarms support of all system time (12H, 24H) and date format, a 2nd time zone display with 23 predefined time zone names and editable display name, graphical moon phase display, age of moon and date of next full moon, a day countdown timer, volume adjustment.

Another excellent clock. Not likely to register as I usually leave my Palm III off and use the real clocks or my watch. The alarm is too soft to be heard by me.

    E-Racer (Game/US$5.00) by Ophir Prusak
    Racing game.

Never really like racing games. I always crash. I include this as this looks like an old familiar favourite. Will probably delete this from my Palm III in the near future.

    Bubblet (Game/US$10.00) by oopsdream software
Bubblet is a simple, yet addicting puzzle game. Match similar patterned bubbles together in order to burst them from the board. The more bubbles you burst at once, the more points you receive.

Unlikely to buy/register as cost too high and I do not find the game interesting enough.

The game stopped working when it expired so I deleted it.

    FlipIt (Game/US$5.00) by Dovcom
FlipIt consists of a grid of cells which can be on(shaded) or off(blank). Each time you click on a cell, you toggle the state of that cell and the 4 cells above, below, left and right of it. The object of FlipIt is to turn all of the cells in the grid off. To change the board options, select New Game from the Options menu. There you can change the size of the board, select a random board, or have a randomly generated board which is solvable in a specific number of moves.

This is an interesting and simple game (at least I find it so). As the cost is low, I am likely to register it in the near future.

    ProxiWeb (Application/US$n/a) by Proxinet
Fully graphical, online web browser for the Palm III (or equivalently-upgraded Pilots and PalmPilots). New features include support for secure (SSL-encrypted) web pages, cookies, and basic authentication. It also supports editable bookmarks, a locking cache, HTML forms, embedded graphics, support for navigating frame pages, accelerated online browsing, and server-side imagemap support.

Note that ProxiWeb for Palm III differs from that of other models.

My first experiments with it leaves me disappointed. This is because Palm III is not that suitable for colour graphics you find on WWW and the screen is too small. I am unable to locate the cost anywhere.

    RPN (Utilities/US$15.00) by Russ Webb
A scientific calculator. The ways to use this calculator seems endless to me, although the way of using it is rather strange, not the normal way you use your calculator unless you have eve own this 'kind' of HP calculator before.

I like this calculator very much as it is very versatile. I have problems mastering it. Although the cost is rather high but I feel it is worth it. If you do not have a scientific / financial / or whatever? calculator, I recommend this. I am likely to register this in the near future.

Note that the add-ins to increase the capability of the RPN calculator need to be registered separately, although there are a number of freeware.

    Planetarium (Application/US$19.00) by Andreas Hofer
This program calculates the position of the Sun, the Moon, all the planets and some of the brightest stars in the sky for any time and a any geographical position. Star gazers can use it to find or identify the planets in a clear nighttime sky. It can also be used as a compass when the Sun or Moon is visible. New features: - Calculates Rise and set times - Displays 110 Messier objects - Search function for stars, constellations and Messier objects - Second time zone for correct function of the Now button - Angles can be entered and displayed in degrees and minutes - Star tapping function improved - Zoom function - Sky view can be inverted (white stars on black sky).

I have not quite work out how to use this program yet. I will register if I find it useful and applicable in Singapore.

FPSUtil Pro(Utilties/US$15.00) by Fighter Pilot Software
Display info about your Palm III such as battery information, time of your last hot synch, etc.

The cost is on the high side. After registration, you are allow to do other tasks. I feel that the tasks allowed to do, do not do anything necessary. I will register if I find the tasks are useful.

Pilot Doctor (Utilities/US$10.00) by Chuck Thompson
Pilot Doctor is the must have Diagnostics Utility for the PalmPilot Personal/ Professional and Palm III. Pilot Doctor runs 10 different tests on the PalmPilot to make sure that there are no problems. If there is a problem Pilot Doctor will find it. (Requires PocketC)

I like this utility and the cost is reasonable. What I do not like is the difficulty of payment. You need to send a cheque to Chuck Thompson. This means a lot of time and effort queueing at banks to buy US$. I prefer using credit cards. I will register when it is easier to transact.

Pilot Info Manager (Utilities/US$10.00) by Derek Kwan
Pilot Info Manager not only will show you all kind of information about your Pilot, but also allow you to config the settings that some of them are not even available via standard pref app. #OS Info Manager * OS Version * Release Stage * Bugfix level * Build revision * CPU Performance * Change Auto-off timer * Change Master Volume * Change Alarm Volume * Change System Volume #Battery Info Manager: * Current Battery Level * Change Battery Type * Change Battery Warning Threshold level * Change Battery Critical Threshold level #Memory Info Manager: * Memory Card Name * Company name that made the memory card * Memory Card Version * ROM Size in bytes (also in kb) * RAM Size in bytes (also in kb) * Free Memory in bytes (also in kb) * Memory De-Fragmentation Function.

I like this utility very much. It can do so much for so little. I will definitely register this in the near future.

Sales Warrior (Application/US$39.95) by iambic Software
SalesWarrior lets you dramatically leverage your Palm device to track sales opportunities, leads, referrals, actual sales, costs and commissions. You can sort and filter the sales opportunity data, copy it to the Palm device Memo Pad application, and then export the data to your PC.

I do not use this program nor have evaluated it. I put it here as I feel that Palm III is very useful for those "on-the-go" like salespeople. This mention is just for information.

There are many, many programs available. There is no way I could list all of them. You can check them out by using the links below.

I have receive and have freeware on my Palm III and feel the need to contribute something back.

I have been programming in BASIC since the early days of Apple II and IBM PC when that is the only viable language. In fact, most the programs below were tested using the old reliable: GWBASIC 3.3, before being converted for Palm III.

I have some DOC files too to share. I will add more when I find more interesting topics. I am willing to take suggestions too. Do suggest them to me and email me. I will work on topics that is known to me.

    Tips to share
I am putting here tips which I considered very important but is not documented in the standard documentation you receive when you bought your Palm III. I will add to this section whenever I feel the tip important enough to highlight, otherwise you can get tips and FAQs using the links I had provided above.

TIP #1 Soft Reset and Hard Reset
Resetting your Palm III is unavoidable. If you try our shareware, soon or later, you will need to reset your Palm III when it "freezes" on you.

A soft reset is just turning can mean just pressing the on/off button.

If this does not work, then use a paper clip and locate the small hole on the back of your Palm III. By inserting the end (you may need to bend the paper clip a bit) of the paper clip and pushing it GENTLY into the hole, you can feel you have press something. Your Palm III will perform a soft reset and the "Palm III" message will appear. Wait and this may take some time.

If this fails, you will need to do a hard reset. WAIT.... read all of this before you do anything...

A hard reset can be done by holding down the on/off switch and putting the paper clip into the hole on the back of your Palm III. (WAIT! DON'T DO THIS YET! READ ON). A hard reset is a drastic set. After performing a hard reset, a message will appear "Erase all data? YES = 'up' button. NO = any button". If you do not select YES, you are usually back where you first started and your Palm III remains frozen. If you select YES, YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PALM III. It will be clean and you need to do a hot-synch and install back all your programs.

I did this before when I was new to the Palm III and installing programs occasionally froze my Palm III. I can only do a hard reset and got so frustrated each time my installed programs got erased and I had to re-install all over again. This was before I came across a warm reset.

Doing a warm reset will not erase all your installed programs in your Palm III. It will bring your Palm III up. This tip was a life saver. I came across it only later. I like to share with you.

You do a warm reset by pressing the Scroll Up button and at the same time, insert the paper clip into the hole at the back. So far I found this to work all the time. Remember to wait for a while for your Palm III to work. It does take some time.

    Tip #2 Hot Synch problems
I am not sure whether this tip can be found elsewhere. You can try Hot Synch tips found elsewhere too.

Whenever I have hot-synch problems. These are the steps I usually take.

Step 1: Check cable connections. Try again.
Step 2: Restart your PC. Try again.
Step 3: Shutdown your PC. Off all power. On again. Try again.
Step 4: Do a soft reset on your Palm III. Try again.

Quite a number of times after trying Step 1 to 3, I had to perform Step 4. Initially when I first encountered this problem, I had to scratched my head wondering what went wrong until it occurred to me that I had not checked my Palm III. I have yet to see someone mentioning that Palm III could be the source of the problem and doing a soft reset will resolve the hot synch problem. It is not even in any of the books I read.
