Seeing off 1

Wang, Wei (700 A.D.-761 A.D.)

After I send off my friend from the mountain,
I close my rough wood gate at sunset.
The grass turns green each spring.
I wonder when my friend will return.

1 In the poem "Recruiting Hermits", collected in Anthology of Country Chu's Poetry, Xiao-shan Huai-nan says, "Well-born children travel and do not return./ The spring grass grows wild and looks desolate." Some critics say that Wang imitates Xiao-shan Huai-nan's poem; others say that the perspectives of these two poets are different: Huai-nan's lines are sad, while Wang’s lines are optimistic.
