To My Old Friends in Yang City While I Stayed Overnight in a Boat on the Tong-Lu River

Meng, Hao Jan   (689 A.D.-740 A.D.)

The mountain looked dim.
I heard the sad cries of apes.
The green river rushed during the night.
The wind rustled the leaves along both shores.
The moon illuminated my lonely boat.
Being a stranger in Jian City made me long for my old friends in Yang City.
A thousand miles from you,
I could only convert my tears into a sentimental poem
And mail it to the remote port on the west side of the sea 1.

1 The port on the west side of the sea refers to Yang City.
