I Go to Visit Hung-Chien Lu 1, But Do Not Find Him

Chaio, Jan    (720 A.D.-c. 800 A.D.)

Although Lu moved to the suburb of the city,
The wild path leading to his house penetrates fields of hemp and mulberry.
The chrysanthemums near his fence are newly planted;
They have not bloomed yet even though autumn is coming.
When I knock on his door, I hear nothing,
Not even the barking of a dog.
I go to his west neighbor and ask him where Lu has gone.
He replies that Lu visits the mountain everyday
And returns at sunset.

1 Hung-Chien Lu was good at judging the taste of tea. He wrote the Bible of Tea. Later generations honor him as the Father of Tea or the God of Tea.
