The SupergirlHISTORY: Full Circle

  1. THE FIRST SUPERGIRL
  2. REBIRTH
  3. FULL CIRCLE

After the original Supergirl's heroic death in the Crisis on Infinite Earths, the multiple Earths were merged and many people who had existed previously no longer did in the new continuity. Some were remembered by those who survived the Crisis, but all memories of Supergirl were erased. Superman was once again the sole survivor of Krypton. There was no Supergirl in this universe. Yet her spirit lived on, perhaps to be reborn in another form.

Members of the merged universe were reintroduced to Supergirl in the three part "Supergirl Saga" that ran September-October '88 (SUPERMAN #21, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #444, SUPERMAN #22). Once again, another parallel Earth located in a "pocket universe" was threatened and needed the aid of Superman. On this Earth, Superman had begun his exploits as Superboy, but had disappeared 10 years earlier. Now evil Kryptonians were invading the planet and its defences were weakening. A benevolent Lex Luthor and his wife, Lana Lang, fought bravely to oppose them, but Lana was killed and the world seemed doomed without a superhero. In honor of his wife, and in memory of Superboy, Lex created an artificial, shapeshifting "Supergirl" based on his wife's form (her molecular matrix to be specific) and with her memories. The stage was set for another historic meeting of Superman and his female counterpart. The fledging superheroine travelled to Earth Prime to bring back Superman in hopes that, together, they might defeat the supervillains. But in the battle that followed the alternate world was lost, with Supergirl as its sole survivor. Greatly injured from her confrontation, Superman brought her back with him and left her with the Kents to recover. Soon she would strike out on her on, but where to go?

Between this origin miniseries and the current Supergirl series that began in 1996, this "Matrix" as she called herself, had a number of specials and guest appearances in which she mistakenly took up with the evil Lex Luthor II, believing him to be like the benevolent Luthor of her world. Eventually she discovered Luthor's true nature and took off. She drifted, a superhero without a purpose or a base. She had no secret identity, no real ties to her adopted home. But that all changed once she met her "other half", Linda Danvers (see Introduction). Supergirl has returned to her comicbook roots as girl-next-door Linda Danvers, secret identity Supergirl. But this time around, things are a little more interesting...
