Obadiah HOLMES Rev.

Left England from Preston, Lancashire, Eng. to Salem, Mass. on Nov.21, 1638.  In 1642-43 moved to Rohoboth, RI.  Obadiah was a Baptist sothey were not allowed to live in the Puritan colony.  He was  publicly whipped by the Puritans at Boston, Sept. of 1651 for hisreligious opinions and "for holding meetings on the Lord's Day fromhouse to house."  He served as a minister of the Baptist Church  at Newport, RI from 1652 to 1682.  Rev. Obadiah Holmes, the emigrant, had about 5,000 descendants livingin America as early as 1790.
