GENERAL
Email List If you want to send a private email to only one member of the list, then you'll need to send it "off-list", that is, address the email to that person directly, not to the group's "3sig@topica.com" address. When you receive email, you'll be able to tell whether it is on-list or off-list: all email posted on-list will have "[3SE]" at the beginning of the subject line.

lipsig@atlantic.net
A group of people exchanging messages and discussing a topic of interest via email. Everyone on the list sends email to the one list address, and the message is automatically forwarded it to all the other members of the list.
One who creates and manages the list, defines the purpose and the type of list, and is ultimately in charge of its operation. The list owner may or may not be the moderator as well.
A member of the list who is free to read messages from the list, and to post messages if it is an open discussion list.
One who manually approves messages before they are sent to the entire list; this person may or may not be the owner as well. Right now I'm not moderating emails sent in, but if we somehow start getting spam in, I will be.
A collection of list messages compiled into one email. Digests are often chosen as a way to decrease the amount of email received from a list. For now, I'm just having the emails come in and go out individually
Someone who mostly reads messages but doesn't post
The email address to which list subscribers send messages for redistribution to the list.In our case it's 3sig@topica.com
The computer that is the source of and stores all list information.
A one-way list in which subscribers receive all messages, but can't post or contribute.
An open dialog list that allows you to participate in the discussion by posting messages to the list. This is what ours is.
Overseen by the moderator who aims to keep the discussion focused and of a high quality. All messages must be approved by the moderator before being sent to the list. I'll only do this if we start getting spam and stuff from non-family sources.
Open subscription means anyone can subscribe, whereas closed subscription lists require owner approval. Ours is set up as closed, for the same reason as just above -- junk email.
An owner initiating a new list, and defining how the list works and is presented. This includes, but is not limited to, setting list type (moderated, etc.), writing a list description, handling errors, approving subscriptions, etc.
The process of an owner managing subscriptions, bounced messages, and the ongoing functions of the list.
Keeping the history of a list's messages for public access or for access to list members only.
Becoming a member of a list, in order to read and possibly post messages to the list. Depending on the type of list, the list owner may need to approve the subscription.
Cancelling your membership to a list. This will stop all email that you receive from the list and will stop the ability for you to post to the list
(if the list was a discussion list).
Contributing to the discussion by sending a message to the list address.
A method for determining what messages are viewed. Users can filter in or out messages based on chosen criteria.
The process of typing in a word or string of words to retrieve all relevant matches in a list archive or list directory.
The complete history of messages on a list - either public or private to members. Ours is set to be available only to subscribers.
Email that gets returned due to incorrect or expired address or server error.
Settings elected by program unless owner or subscriber chooses otherwise.
To communicate emotionally and/or excessively via email. This can occur if a discussion gets out of control and can ruin the experience for list members.
Email list manners - the recommended way to participate in email lists e.g. following the list owner's guidelines.
The options subscribers can set to control how they view messages or participate on a list.
Personalized text attached to the end of a message sent.
Sending unsolicited mail to a large number of email users - considered improper behavior. Sometimes used to refer to any unsolicited and unwanted ads. "Junk" email.
