WWF Thunder : August 13th 1998
[The European Rumble 1998]
Fargo, North Dakota
Live On The U.S.A. Network {21:00 - 22:00}

Live in Fargo, North Dakota, it's the first ever European Rumble! No, it ain't being held in Europe, so the title is a *bit* misleading, but the winner of tonight's Rumble match will go on to Summerslam to face the British Bulldog for the European title! Yep, we're dedicating a whole show to the European title, we've *definetly* got our priorities straight going into Summerslam! And now, one *more* exclamation mark!

But first, we go back to Monday Night Raw, as a match between Bart Gunn and Jesse Jammes somehow led to the New Age Outlaws becoming the NEW Tag Team Champions. Jeff Jarrett said this past Monday that the decision wouldn't stand, and indeed it won't. After Raw went off the air, it was determined that the whole thing was pretty stupid basically, and that the tag titles *weren't* on the line, therefore they can't change hands. The belts were returned to the New Midnight Express the following morning, and the Summerslam match can go ahead as originally planned. It was a ratings ploy folks, pure and simple.

And tonight, in addition to the Rumble, one half of the *former* tag team champions, the 'Roadogg' Jesse Jammes, will meet the 500 pound Mabel ; Chris Benoit meets Savio Vega one on one, and the Rocky Mountain Beast Vader will be in action against the Rock! But we're gonna take it backstage to start, as Devon Storm is on-hand.

Storm : Well, here it is. The *European* Rumble. You know, just a month back, I was standing here with the WWF [censored] belt, it was a title I fought long and hard to get some respect for. I tried to build the [censored] into something people could be proud of, be excited about. Then all of a sudden, I get a call saying 'Sorry Devon, no more [censored] division, there's no market for it.' Well that sucks! I built that division with my bare hands... But anyway. Tonight, it's a step towards the European championship for Devon Storm. And if by chance, or circumstance, a situation would arise where Devon Storm can *not* take the gold, that's okay. Because right here tonight, the World Wrestling Federation is gonna get it's first glimpse at *my* new tag team partner. Later tonight, you're gonna get your first look at Ace Darling.

Can't wait. The Rumble's on it's way in about 20 minutes or so, but up next, Savio Vega and Chris Benoit go at it.

Raw Highlights : The Rock vs Jeff Jarrett/Sycho Sid
A misplaced belt shot from the world champion, sees Maivia end up with a pinfall victory over Sycho Sid.

Chris Benoit vs Savio Vega

These two were scheduled to face each other at the King Of The Ring, but Chris... was er, kidnapped by Goldust... or something... Ah fuck, let's just try and forget that ever happened. Vega attacks Benoit before the bell, nailing him in the back with his knee, then blasting him right out of the ring with a superkick! The bell rings as Benoit falls to the outside, where he's left to return on his own. A lock-up back in the ring, and Savio stops it with a boot to the chest. Whip into the ropes and a clothesline attempt from Vega, but Benoit ducks and goes into the ropes again. Dropkick from Chris on the return puts Vega down!

Savio up to his feet, but Benoit'a quick to armdrag him back down to the canvas. Vega gets to his feet again, and Benoit shoves him into the corner head on. Savio's momentum bounces him off the turnbuckles, and the Crippler grabs him and executes a perfect German suplex. And another. And another, getting the matches first two count. Pulling Vega to his feet, Benoit then nails him with a snap suplex, and things kind of coast from then on. Benoit with the crossface to end what was pretty much a squash match.

Chris Benoit made Savio Vega submit to the Crippler Crossface in 0:03:45.
Rating: ** 3/4

Benoit with the victory, and we now cut back to Marty Jannetty backstage.

Jannetty : This coming Sunday night, Hacksaw and myself, we'll be taking out the trash in regards to the Million Dollar Organisation. But you see, I've only been here a short time, and let me tell ya, I've got a thirst for the action. So what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna get myself a *second* Summerslam match. Tonight, you're looking at the winner of the European Rumble, and the *next* WWF European Champion. Davey Boy Smith, you're a great wrestler and a great athlete, but come Summerslam, that's gonna be *my* belt.

WWF Summerslam Report

Thanks Michael. That was hilarious. Well, up next, we were scheduled to have Vader take on The Rock for the Intercontinental Title, but who knows what took place outside the arena during the commercials, as we cut to a shot of Rocky being carried up onto a stretcher, and loaded into an ambulance. Anyone want to fill me in as to what happened here? Hopefully we'll find out pretty soon, as Vader hits the ring.

And his replacement opponent is... Barry Horowitz! Vader's pissed off to the extreme, and the big man is *always* a *little* pissed.

Vader vs Barry Horowitz

As the commentators speculate on what happened to Maivia, Vader manhandles Horowitz, putting him away in short order with the Vader Bomb.

Vader pinned Barry Horowitz with the Vader Bomb in 0:00:52.
Rating: 1/2*

Hey, a one sentence match report! Vader marches off away from the ring, as we cut to Michael Cole, who's outside at the scene of the crime.

Cole : Well, JR, we saw just before the last match that the Intercontinental Champion has been taken via ambulance to Fargo City Hospital. From sources on-hand at the scene, it seems that the Rock was attacked and beaten, with severe damage done to his previously injured right leg. We'll keep you posted on Maivia's condition. Back to ringside.

Hmmm. Hopefully this isn't *too* severe an injury. Maivia's leg of course, injured at the hands of Jeff Jarrett and Sycho Sid this past Monday night on Raw. As Michael said, we'll keep you posted. Fit Finlay is backstage.

Finlay : It's about time the World Wrestling Federation showed it's respect to Europe, by dedicating a whole show to it. The European title, it's not the title I want, 'cos believe me Jarrett, I haven't forgotten what went on between you and me. But it\s the European title I'm gonna take. They may have kept me off the Summerslam card so far, but right here tonight, I'm gonna fight my way on! 14 other men? No chance, *I'm* the next European Champion.

21:17 EST {Commercials} 21:20 EST

More footage of Rocky being taken away is shown. The next ma- Wait, I'm hearing that Michael Cole is backstage, and he's got the World Champion by his side.

Cole : Jeff, you just saw the footage from outside the arena, did you have anything to do with this?!

Jarrett : Haha, Michael, you're so ignorant. It''s perfectly clear that what's taken place here was just a terrible, terrible accident. What most likely happened, The Rock probably walked into a door, 'cos he's so damn stupid, and he never thinks about the *consequences* of his stupidity. It's about time everyone realised, when you cross Jeff Jarrett, *bad* things take place.

Cole : 'Bad things happen?' So you're saying you *were* behind this?

Jarrett : Accident, pure and simple. I'm kinda sick of-

Bart and Bob enter the interview area.

Bart : Boy, we sure did a number on Maivia Jeff. Just like you asked.

Jarrett : GodDAMNit!

Cole : Back to you JR.

Raw Highlights : Bart Gunn vs Jesse Jammes
Things get a bit messy, and an eventual pin from Jammes on Bob Holly sees the New Age Outlaws win the World Tag Team titles. For one day at least.

'Oh You Didn't Know?'

One half of the former and possibly future tag team champions, Jesse Jamme heads to the ring. Mabel already in the squared circle waiting, Jammes gets halfway through his catchphrases, when he's nailed from behind. The bell rings, and the match is on.

Mabel vs Jesse Jammes

Mabel with a forearm to the back that sends Jammes down to the mat straight away. A series of stomps keep Jesse down, before the big man comes off the ropes with an elbowdrop that damn near crushes the Roadog. Allowing Jammes time to get to his feet, Mabel stands around and looks menacing for a while. Written all over his face is the fact that he *knows* this match is getting a minus rating, and he *likes* it. Giving JJ that much time proves to be a mistake though, as when up to his feet, Jammes blocks a right hand and nails Mabel with one of his own, Roadog's first offence of the match.

More right hand shots get Mabel staggering. A boot to the mid-section doubles Mabel over, but Jammes then blows his momentum by attempting a piledriver. Jammes doesn't even come close to getting him up, and one backdrop later, he's back on the canvas. Stomp from Mabel. Picking Jammes up, he shoves him into the corner, then pretty much crushes every damn bone in his body by charging in with an avalanche. You know, Mabel matches are so much fun to write. In other news, Bret Hart's a classy guy. Okay, enough lies. Jammes collapses to the mat again, and he's just basically getting his ass pummeled here.

Until, get this, Mabel goes up to the second rope. He'd go up top but his WWF contract doesn't allow it, these rings are expensive you know. Big spash... misses the mark! Jammes with a roll away, and this sparks a comeback. When Mabel gets to his feet, the Roadog goes on the offensive. Getting him reeling with a triple threat of clotheslines, Jammes finally gets the big man down with a dropkick! Can he capitalise? Hell no, 'cos here come the world tag team champions to end this travesty of a match.

Jesse James defeated Mabel by disqualification in 0:04:20.
Rating: -** 3/4

It's beatdown time for the Express, as they do a number on Jammes as Mabel gets to his feet and slowly leaves the ring. His job is done. As Bart and Bob lay the boots in, Mabel gets met in the aisle by Adam Bomb! Bomb starts slugging it out with the purple big man, as Billy Gunn charges by! Gunn enters the ring, nails Bart with a right, nails Bob with a right, and cleans house of the tag champs! The Express make a retreat as Bomb and Mabel go at it, and we need to take another break. Bomb vs Mabel! PPV! You GOTTA see it!

21:28 EST {Commercials} 21:31 EST

it's almost Rumble time, let's take a brief look at the history of the WWF European Championship.

European Title Video Package:
Clips: From Wrestlemania I, as a run in from Dustin Runnels [who?] sees current world heavyweight champion Jeff Jarrett take the fall over Rocky Maivia, to become the first ever European champion. The next night on Raw, Jarrett is stripped of the title belt, and Adam Bomb is victorious over Owen Hart and once again, Rocky Maivia to take the title. Highlights from In Your House, as Bomb defeats Sycho Sid, Marc 'Missing In Action' Mero and Fit Finlay in a four corners match. The next night on Raw, Bomb's three month title reign comes to an end as Mabel pulls off a huge upset to become champion. Mabel's reign lasted only a week, as interference from Owen Hart allows the British Bulldog to take the gold. And that brings us to tonight.

15 men are due to go at it in just a few seconds. Two men to start, then every *90 seconds* thereafter, another man will enter, until all fifteen men have entered the ring. Elimination via over the top rope, last man standing goes to Summerslam to face the British Bulldog. Here we go!

Howard Finkel's on hand for the introductions.

Finkel : Introducing first, the man who drew *number one*... Devon Storm!

Hmm, well that's not exactly the start Storm was hoping for earlier in the-

Finkel : And now, the man who drew *number two*... Ace Darling!

Storm : Damnit!

The European Rumble 1998

Well, we have a bit of a 'Demolition' start to this one, if you smell what I'm cookin'. Not the best start for a tag team in their WWF debut. The bell rings to get us underway, as Storm and Darling exchange a few glances. Storm seems content to sit back, but Darling decides to smack him in the face with a right hand, and the match is on! The two trade fists, until Storm gets a definite advantage with a knee to the groin. Nice way to treat your tag partner. Snap suplex from Devon puts Ace down, and he locks on a half Boston crab for about 20 seconds, eventually just allowing Darling out. Ace is helped up to his feet, and now it's stalling time baby! The clock counts down, and the next man in...

x Fit Finlay entered at 0:01:30

Petit little pop from the crowd, his mini-feud with Jarrett recently gaining him some support, but let's face it, that angle went nowhere. And now Storm and Darling can focus away from each other, and focus directly on Finlay. Storm immediately charges at the Irishman, but misses natch, and Fit puts him down with a clothesline. But a knee to the back from Darling puts Finlay down himself, and Ace goes to put him out over the top right away. Tangling himself up in the ropes, Fit is able to keep himself in the ring, and in the match, until he manages to rake the eyes of Darling, and get back to safety. Darling shakes off the eye poke, as Finlay and Devon start duking it out in the corner. All eyes to the aisle again...

x Matt Hardy entered at 0:03:00

One half of the Hardy Boyz hit the ring, and he goes right after Darling. Lots of right hand shots to the newcomer, then he picks him up and nails him with an atomic drop. Taking a risk by going to the top rope, Hardy then comes off with a moonsault! Hardy goes to send Ace out, but Storm, who'd meanwhile gotten the better of Finlay on the other side of the ring, is there to make the save. After saving Darling, Devon cross corner whips Matt into the buckle, then damn near gets eliminated as Hardy counters an avalanche with a backdrop. Luckily for Storm he managed to land on the apron, and the buzzer sounds again, with no one yet eliminated...

x Chris Chetti entered at 0:04:30

Chetti's in, and he goes right after the man who took that belt off of him back at King Of The Ring. Chetti really goes to work on Storm, as meanwhile Fit and Hardy doubleteam Darling. Ace weathers their offence, but Devon has more problems, coming dangerously close to being thrown out again. Storm holds onto the top rope for dear life, until Fit Finlay comes from behind to make the save. Why? Who knows. Hardy and Darling keep going at it, both men coming close to being eliminated at different times, but both men manage to survive as the clock counts down to zero...

x Jerry Lynn entered at 0:06:00

And Lynn's pretty pissed at Storm too. Just like Chetti, Lynn goes right after Devon, wanting payback for his defeat at the Last Chance Saloon. Lynn with a waistlock suplex on Storm, before scooping him up and looking to plant him over the top rope. Having a tag team partner in the ring with you is always a blessing, despite the 'every man for himself' rules, and Darling's there to help out. Ace comes from behind Lynn, and executes a German suplex on him,  saving Storm from danger. Elsewhere, Finlay gets Matt Hardy up in position for the Tombstone Piledriver, until a shot from behind from Chetti puts an end to it. Chetti goes to try and put *Finlay* out, but Fit hangs on long enough for the buzzer to sound again. Will someone *ever* be thrown out...

x Head Hunter #1 entered at 0:07:30

Headhunter #1 enters the arena, and just look at the crowd give a rats ass. The Hunter joins Darling in beating on Jerry Lynn, though he himself is soon attacked by Matt Hardy. The Hardyz picked up one of their few WWF victories against the Headhunters, and Matt is obviously confident of getting the upper hand again here. He doesn't though, as #1 kicks the rookie's ass. Using such great technical moves as biting the face, the Hunter controls against Hardy, though again, he can't get him over the top rope. Storm then strolls over to #1 and nails him with a neckbreaker, allowing Matt a breather...

x Stevie Ray entered at 0:09:00

His brother has a big grudge match at Summerslam against Triple-H, will Stevie Ray take *his* spot on the Summerslam card? Ray goes for Darling, but Lynn and Chetti team up to nail Stevie from behind with a double dropkick. Chetti backs Ray into a corner and starts chopping away, but Stevie soon starts fighting back, sending Chetti staggering back with hard forearm after hard forearm. A bodyslam puts him down, and Ray then comes off the ropes with a huge elbowdrop! Storm and Darling are still going after Finlay, and godDAMN we need an elimination soon. The buzzer goes again...

x I.R.S. entered at 0:10:30

Schyster makes his World Wrestling Federation debut here at the Rumble, and what a start to his WWF career this could be. Irwin goes straight for Darling, pulling him off of Fit Finlay, and making his first impression in the WWF with a vertical suplex. He then comes off the ropes with a legdrop, until Devon Storm grabs Irwin from behind, and slams him to the canvas. On the opposite side of the ring, Chetti and Stevie Ray continue to grapple. After getting to his feet, Darling goes over to join the two, and it's his helping of Stevie Ray that leads to the first elimination! Goodbye Chetti.

x Darling threw out Chetti in 0:11:28

Chetti's pissed, but he quickly retreats to the dressing rooms, as the eight people left in the ring keep at it. Stevie Ray goes back after Ace Darling, trapping him inside a bearhug, until the time comes for entrant number 10...

x Hack Myers entered at 0:12:00

Myers makes his entrance to apathy from the North Dakota crowd, and he joins the fray by going after Headhunter #1. Ace Darling meanwhile has fought out of the bearhug, but he gets pounced on by Matt Hardy. Hardy with a dropkick on Ace, the momentum of which nearly sends Darling out of the ring. Stevie Ray then pounces on *Hardy*, and chokes him against the ropes, allowing Darling to stay in the squared circle. A brief partnership between Ray and I.R.S. is formed, as the two men nail Matt with a double clothesline. Finlay is seen taking a big gamble by going to the top turnbuckle, just like Ace did earlier, as he comes flying off with a headbutt onto the Headhunter. There goes the buzzer...

x Pierre Oulette entered at 0:13:30

Well this guy's *gotta* be the favourite. Not for any superior natural ability, but because it makes some sense in angle terms for him to face the Bulldog at Summerslam. Oops, was that breaking too much kayfabe? As Jerry Lynn comes close to putting Hack Myers out of the ring, Oulette goes after Matt Hardy, who's been left alone by Stevie and Irwin, who've now decided to pound on each other. Pierre with a backbreaker on the youngster, but when he attempts a suplex, it's blocked and reversed by Hardy, sending Oulette crashing to the canvas. Lynn has Myers almost completely out, but a shot from Devon Storm from behind puts an end to that. Devon pounds on the back of J.L., but before he can do much damage, Hack nails him with a lariat! The crowd counts down the seconds to number 12...

x Jim Duggan entered at 0:15:00

Hooo! Now *this* entrance gets a rise from the crowd. He may suck as a wrestler, but the man is over. Duggan charges to the ring with the 2 x 4 in his hand, and he isn't afraid to use it, whacking Myers across the back with it! The shot allows Devon Storm to pick the Shah up, and toss him out to the floor for only the second elimination so far...

x D. Storm threw out Myers in 0:15:20

Hacksaw, still with the board in hand, pauses to start up a USA chant in the crowd, then turns and whacks *Storm* with the 2 x 4! Surely this isn't allowed...

x Duggan threw out D. Storm in 0:15:45

Duggan has certainly helped to clear the ring out a bit, as the man who drew number 1 in this match, finally has to return to the locker rooms. I.R.S. comes up from behind Hacksaw, and finally grabs the board away from him. Surprisingly Irwin doesn't use it, merely tosses it to the floor, then rakes the eyes of Duggan. Schyster starts to choke Hacksaw out in the corner, as *another* wrestler bites the dust, as we see Ace Darling, undaunted by the loss of his partner, dump Headhunter #1 to the floor...

x Darling threw out Head Hunter #1 in 0:16:21

To make sure we'll still have one complete tag team in the ring, the buzzer sounds and out comes...

x Jeff Hardy entered at 0:16:30

Jeff hits the ring, joining up with his brother Matt, and they start to doubleteam Fit Finlay. So now, in the ring we have ; The Hardyz, Ace Darling, Fit Finlay, Jim Duggan, IRS, Stevie Ray, Pierre Oulette and Jerry Lynn, with two men still to enter the ring. As Matt and Jeff conspire to eliminate the Irishman, Pierre Oulette dukes it out with Jerry Lynn. And Lynn gets the better of him, taking him down to the mat with a forward russian legsweep, then getting a decent pop from the crowd after a springboard moonsault! Oulette is dazed, and only four minutes after entering the ring, Jerry clotheslines him out to the floor!

x Lynn threw out P. Oulette in 0:17:47

As Duggan turns the tables and is currently dominating I.R.S., and as Fit Finlay starts to beat up on both Hardyz, the buzzer goes again, signalling the entrance of wrestler number 14...

x Head Hunter #2 entered at 0:18:00

Hunter #2 goes after Ace Darling, obviously not happy with the fact that Ace tossed out Hunter #*1*. Jerry Lynn meanwhile comes to the aid of the Hardyz against Finlay, but then promptly turns on Matt, scooping and slamming him. As Lynn goes down to pull Matt back up, Matt quickly pulls him down to the canvas with an armdrag, and Jeff then comes off the ropes to drop a legdrop over J.L.'s face. Finlay now starts going after I.R.S., aiding Jim Duggan, who continues to pound on him. Finlay and Duggan come close to putting I.R.S out, but the wily veteran survives by the skin of his teeth, as the buzzer goes off for the final time tonight...

x Marty Jannetty entered at 0:19:30

Well well well, the gang's all here. With all 15 wrestlers having made their entrance, the match enters it's final stage. At Summerslam 98, Davey Boy Smith will face one of the following men : Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Ace Darling, Fit Finlay, Jim Duggan, I.R.S., Stevie Ray, Jerry Lynn, Headhunter #2 or Marty Jannetty. 10 men left, only one will survive. But it takes next to no time at all for the total to go down to nine, as Schyster manages to fend off the attacks from Finlay and Duggan, and manages to backdrop a charging Matt Hardy out over the top rope...

x I.R.S. threw out M. Hardy in 0:19:53

That'll teach Matt to abandon his brother in Jeff's continuing back and forth contest with Jerry Lynn. Lynn blasts Jeff with a DDT, but is prevented from trying to eliminate the second Hardy brother by Schyster, who looks like he wants to go down as eliminating *both* Hardyz. Lynn takes exception to the interference though, and nails Irwin with a dropkick, sending Schyster staggering back into the waiting arms of Pierre Oulette, who executes a nice looking belly to back suplex on the taxman.

Marty Jannetty though, is currently dishing out right hands to Headhunter #2, before nailing him with an armbar takedown into the centre of the ring. Jannetty stays down on the canvas to give #2 some *more* fists to the face. Marty pulls the Hunter to his feet, as the camera cuts away to see that not only has Jeff Hardy made a comeback against Lynn, but he's managed to clothesline him out of the ring!

x J. Hardy threw out Lynn in 0:20:57

Lynn is eliminated, and he's barely to his feet on the outside, when Darling tosses Hunter #2 out by his feet.

x Darling threw out Head Hunter #2 in 0:21:09

Seven men left, and Jannetty and Duggan, ahead of their tag match on Sunday night, doubleteam on I.R.S., as Jeff and Ace, and Stevie and Finlay pair off against each other. I.R.S. hasn't been too impressive in this match here tonight, but he manages to outsmart Duggan [!] as they go at it, and nails him with a lowblow. That doesn't make Marty too happy either, and he nails Irwin with a hard lariat that sends Schyster over the top rope...

...and he lands on the apron, much to Irwin's relief. Thinking he was elminated, Jannetty turns his back on Schyster, and after slipping back in under the bottom rope, Irwin nails Marty in the back with an axehandle. Jannetty falls to the canvas, and now there's nobody to save the winded Duggan, as Schyster grabs him and pulls him to his feet by the hair, then, with a look of disgust on his face, tosses him to the floor.

x I.R.S. threw out Duggan in 0:21:57

Elsewhere, Stevie manages to nail Finlay with the Slapjack! The Irishman's out cold, but as has happened so many times in this match, at the point of elimination, a save is made. Jeff Hardy comes over to nail Stevie, and Ray responds by blasting Jeff with a clothesline. One gorilla press slam, and now there's just five men left!

x S. Ray threw out J. Hardy in 0:22:37

Now the crowd's hot. Not sure exactly why, the final five : Stevie Ray, I.R.S., Ace Darling, Fit Finlay and Marty Jannetty. Ray goes to return on Finlay, but Fit has by this time recovered from the effects of the Slapjack, and Finlay nails Stevie with a fist to the mid-section. With Ray doubled over, Finlay then takes him down with a kneelift. As he goes down to choke Ray out, as is his style, Jannetty is locking it up with Ace Darling, who's been in this contest since the beginning. I.R.S. meanwhile, is content to sit back and watch the other four go at it, biding his time.

Judging by Darling's performance so far in this match, whatever the outcome, he's proved he's gonna be an excellent addition to the World Wrestling Federation. But at this point in the Rumble, Ace looks tired, and Jannetty has the upper hand as they go at each other. After hitting him with a German suplex, Jannetty picks Darling up to his feet, and superkicks him right out of the ring!

x Jannetty threw out Darling in 0:23:51

The final four, and now I.R.S. *has* to get involved, whether he wants to or not. As Stevie continues battling it out with Fit Finlay [remember the match they had a few weeks back that was interrupted twice, by Benoit and Sid, before finally being thrown out?], Jannetty goes after the Taxman. Trapping Schyster in the corner, Jannetty proceeds to do the old ten right hands to the face routine, but at the 7 count, Irwin, backdrops him out to the floor! And on the opposite side of the ring...

x Wallstreet threw out Jannetty in 0:24:26
x Stevie Ray threw out Finlay in 0:24:27

There's two left. Stevie Ray vs I.R.S. for a shot at the European title. Ray charges at Schyster, blasting him down to the canvas with a clothesline. Irwin's dazed, and when he gets to his feet, another clothesline sends him flying out over the ropes.

x S. Ray threw out Wallstreet in 0:24:53

Stevie's the winner folks! Aren't you happy you read this whole thing, and Stevie fucking Ray ended up as the winner? :)
