Lockhart Post Register _ Class of 1954

Students return home for special anniversary ... (From the Lockhart Post Register 7/1/2004)

From California, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and all over Texas, Lockhart High School graduates from the class of 1954 gathered in Lockhart to celebrate their 50th anniversary at Chisholm Trail Days.

We were "54 in '54," and thirty-two of us returned in 2004 to renew old friendships, share memories, and enjoy a reunion that we could never have imagined fifty years ago.

Fourteen members of our class had been together since the first grade. Over the school years our numbers grew as new students joined us. Some moved away, but many more stayed for graduation and together we passed the Chain of Knowledge to the Junior Class.

We have sadly said farewell to nine classmates who died.

"We Finish to Begin" was our motto, and the class song was "Throughout the Years to Come." After heated 'debate;' we selected-scarlet and silver as our class colors and the red rose as our flower.

We left high school for the grown-up world and became farmers, ranchers. nurses. engineers, homemakers, teachers, business men and women, law enforcement officers, secretaries, ministers, and served our country in the military.

Reunions have brought us together from time to time, and fifty years passed quickly. Many of us have retired and are traveling, starting new careers, spending more time with family and friends, facing illnesses and loss of loved ones, and supporting each other through good times and bad.

Our class favorites and officers rode in the Chisholm Trail parade in a red 1954 Chevrolet BelAir convertible. The rest of us followed on a float with balloons, bales of hay, lots of bottled water, music from the '50s, and carnival beads to throw to people along the parade route.

We got a blue ribbon.

After the parade we gathered at the Legion Inn for barbecue with all the trimmings and finished with a big cake decorated with red roses and silver ribbons.

There was time to visit, look at many pictures and mementos of our high school years, and meet spouses, children, and grandchildren of our classmates. Picture taking never stopped.

Ann Harris Cardwell was mistress of ceremonies. She welcomed everyone, shared news of those who were not able to come, and led us in a brief memorial service for our deceased classmates.

Many people helped make this reunion a very successful occasion including Kay Gotthardt Studer, Ann Harris Cardwell, Jolene Schreiber Williams, Sharon Seeliger Boynton, James O. Lipscomb who provided the float, Barbara Fowler Wilson who fed us after we decorated the float in her garage, Wayne Overman who brought the carnival beads from Louisiana and Patti Pope Hewlett and her husband Don (class of '53) who let us use the beautifully restored convertible.

And here is a special message for all of our classmates who were not able to join us: We enthusiastically voted to have another reunion in five years and are hoping to see everyone then.
