Mary Jane (Ratliff) Lumbard
Her death in 1983 brought it home to me that I know not where I cometh from
My name is Thomas Everette Lumbard; and with the help of my daughter, Vivian Moon
Lumbard we were able to very quickly in 1983-1984 find that we came from Vermont as
descendants of Ebenezer Lumbard of Middletown, Rutland County. Well after logical
deductions, we felt that Benjamin Luimbard of Wells was his father; so we sent for
a Will from Rutland County Probate Court. Came back negative; first big mistake.
Sometime in January of 1999, I was talking to an elderly lady at the NARA in Waltham,
Mass.; She informed me that the towns of Wells, Pawlet, and Fair Haven handled their
Wills thru the Fair Haven Probate Court. On February 24, 1999 we recieved a Will
dated 5 August 1822 of Benjamin Lumbard that proved that he was Ebenezer's father;
bingo (16 years wasted). In 1800 the census shows Benjamin Lumbard in Wells.
So, we check the 1790 census and find out that there are two Benjamins; one in
Brimfield, Mass. and one in Barnstable, Mass. The one in Brimfield shows up in
Brimfield again in 1800. Thus off to Barnstable I go. In April of 1999 I find
the marriage record of Benjamin Lumbard and Patience Goodspeed. We are now three
generations away from proving that we are connected to Thomas Lumbard that came
over on the Mary and John in 1630 from England. As you will see, all of our
research has paper sources for proof.
Well, just got back from 2 weeks in June 1999 research in Wells, Vermont area
and met new cousins and have so much info it will take a year to put it up
