"YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME" ON 45

ORIGINAL 1960s PRESSINGS IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

This detailed discography of the many variants of the 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS' 1966 hit 45 "You're Gonna Miss Me" is based on an original draft by Andrew Brown & Pete Buesnel, 2001. Comments by Andrew Brown, with a few additional notes by Patrick "The Lama" Lundborg.

The discography can also be found in the second edtion of the "13th Floor Elevators Complete Reference File" by Patrick Lundborg (this 2002 book is now out of print).

This online version has been updated in August 2005 and again in September 2008 with some minor changes.

PRESSING #1

CONTACT 5269 (January 1966)

A matrix: LH-2176

B matrix: LH-2177

Label: "A Gorbyn Production." White label with black print.

Publishing: Acquire (both sides)

Pressing: Houston Records

Playtime: 2:26 (listed as 2:20)

COMMENTS: The "LH" ("Location Houston") matrix firmly puts this

pressing in Houston, despite the fact that there is no address on the

label. Produced by Gordon Bynum, hence the "Gorbyn" credit. Acquire

is his BMI publishing company. Was still being pressed on CONTACT as

late as April 1966. Charted in Houston, Austin, Dallas (and possibly

other cities) on Contact. Promo copies do not exist.

PRESSING #2

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107

Label: White label PROMO version of #4. Details below.

PRESSING #3

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107

Label: Two-tone blue label PROMO version of #4. Second promo variation for this pressing. Label has "Promo" added to the design. Details below.

PRESSING #4

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (May/June 1966)

A and B mtx: same as #1 above

Label: "Produced by: Ken Skinner." This is a two-toned blue label

(three-toned if you include the type, which is solid blue), with the

same design as the earlier IA singles, with the logo to the left of

the hole.

Publishing: (A) Acquire Publ. Co. (B) Tapier Music

Pressing: Houston Records

Playtime: 2:26 (listed as 2:20)

COMMENTS: This is the FIRST PRESSING of many on IA. In May or early

June '66 the Elevators blew off Gordon Bynum to sign with IA. Ken

Skinner, then one-third owner of the label, celebrates this event by

both crediting himself as producer (he wasn't) and adding his

publishing company (Tapier) to the B-side. Bynum has no knowledge of

this yet, despite the fact that IA has the balls to use Contact

stampers to press the record.

PRESSING #5

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (May/June 1966)

As #4 above, but adds "A Division of International Artists Producing

Co." in small print at bottom of label.

PRESSING #6

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (May/June 1966)

Label: Two-tone blue label PROMO version of the "Gorbyn" pressing, #7. Details below. White label "Gorbyn" promos are believed not to exist.

PRESSING #7

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (June 1966)

A and B mtx: same as all of the above

Label: "A Gorbyn Production." Same two-tone blue labels as above.

Publishing: Acquire Publ. Co (both sides).

Pressing: Houston Records

Playtime: 2:26 (listed as 2:20) / actual unconfirmed

COMMENTS: By this time, Bynum has discovered that the Elevators have

signed to another label without his knowledge, despite the fact that

he had a contract w/them. He is now properly credited as producer,

and the publishing on "TTH" has reverted back to Acquire.

PRESSING #8

HANNA-BARBERA 492  (late June/early July 1966)

A mtx: HB-LH-2176 D-3 HBR 492X RE 2

B mtx: HB-LH-2177 D-3 HBR 492XX RE 2

Label: No production credits.

Publishing: (A) Acquire Publ. Co. (B) Tapier Music

Pressing: Custom Matrix (Nashville)

Playtime: 2:22 (listed as 2:20)

COMMENTS pt 1: Sometime in June, the IA pressing(s)  must have started

selling briskly, prompting HBR (among others) to try to lease the

master of YGMM. IA agrees verbally to sign lease w/HBR, but

stipulates that the record is not to be pressed until they see the

contract. Upon arriving in L.A.(probably the first week in July), IA

president Bill Dillard learns, probably from Lelan Rogers, that HBR

has begun pressing the record anyway despite the agreement. Dillard

threatens to sue HBR, refuses to sign contract, and leaves. (Note

that the publishing is still Acquire, a vital clue in dating this

disc BEFORE later pressings.)  HBR had obtained the tape via Huey

Meaux, who had been given a copy by Gordon Bynum at an earlier

stage. Note also that when creating a new master, HBR reduced the playtime by

4 seconds through a crude fadeout. This fadeout was then repeated for all (?)

1966 pressings of the 45. HBR 492 was on sale for a very brief period of time and possibly only in Miami, Florida. It is very hard to find today.

COMMENTS pt 2: After conferring with Mike Markesich, it appears that there is only one known pressing of HBR 492; this Nashville pressing. This is apparently distinguished by the "X" on the labels. This with reference to #8 below.

COMMENTS pt 3: Minor variations on the dead wax info have been reported; there may be two different pressings (i e: HBR went through two different stampers), but the only difference between these would be the matrix number.

PRESSING #9 (existence unconfirmed)

HANNA-BARBERA 492 (late June/early July 1966)

Label: No production credits.

Publishing: Acquire Pub. Co. (both sides)

Pressing: Monarch (Los Angeles)

COMMENTS: Based on my interview with Bill Dillard, HBR 492
WAS pressed on the West Coast but apparently all of

these copies were destroyed before distribution, as nobody has a West

Coast press of this as far as we know.

PRESSING #10

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (July 1966)

A mtx: HB-LH-2176 D-2 HBR-492 RE IA 107-A ("HBR 492" scratched out)

B mtx: HB-LH-2177 D-2 HBR-492 XX RE IA 107-B ("HBR 492 XX RE"

scratched out)

Label: Yellow/green. The most common variation. No production credits. The

song title is on one line, and the "Houston, Texas" address is directly below the IA

logo.

Publishing: Tapier Music (both)

Pressing: Rainbo (sic) Records (Hollywood)

Playtime: 2:22 (listed as 2:20)

COMMENTS: By this time, IA has purchased the publishing from

Acquire/Bynum and have filed both songs with their own company,

Tapier. HBR stampers used, though HBR allocation numbers have been

scratched out. A blue/white promo for this pressing has been listed, but almost certainly does not exist.

PRESSING #11

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (post-July 1966)

Yellow/green label and identical to #10, except that the song title on the label is on two lines ("You're/Gonna Miss Me"). The "Houston, Texas" address is still directly below the IA logo

PRESSING #12

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (post-July 1966)

Yellow/green label and identical to #11, except that the "Houston, Texas" address on the label now is several lines below the IA logo.

PRESSING #13

"AI" 107 (Fall 1966)

A mtx: HB-LH-2176 D-3 107-AI HBR-492 X RE 2 ("HBR 492" scratched out)

B mtx: HB-LH-2177 D-3 107-AI HBR-492 XX RE 2 ("HBR 492" scratched out)

Label: Solid dark blue with black letters. The misprinted "AI" company logo is at top of label. "International Artists Producing Co." below it.

Publishing: Tapier Music (both)

Pressing: Rainbo?

Playtime: 2:22 (listed as 2:20) / actual unconfirmed

PRESSING #14

IA 107 (Fall 1966)

A and B mtx: same

Label: Same, except letters are in correct order at top of label.

Publishing: Tapier Music (both)

Pressing: Rainbo?

Playtime: 2:22 (listed as 2:20)

COMMENTS: #13-15 are possibly original 1960s bootlegs. Note also that all

the West Coast pressings have the masterer's initials in dead wax

("Sm"); I have not noted this. Both of the above are very common.

PRESSING #15

IA 107 (Fall 1966)

A and B mtx: same

Label: Solid grey label variation on #14,  possibly PROMO. The publishing credits and playtime are placed slightly farther to the left than on #14.

Publishing: Tapier Music (both)

Pressing: Rainbo?

Playtime: 2:22 (listed as 2:20)

COMMENTS: This is very rare, unlike #13-14.

PRESSING #16

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (Canada - Late 1966?)

A and B mtx: ?

Label: black type on coral blue, design unlike all other variations.

At bottom label states in fine print, "Distributed in Canada by

London Records of Canada."

Publishing: no credits

Pressing: ?
Distribution: London Records

Playtime: 2:22 (listed as 2:20) / actual unconfirmed

COMMENTS: One of the rarest variations (more so than HBR 492), less than 10 copies have been found.

PRESSING #17

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (Canada - Late 1966?)

A mtx : IA-107-S1(2)
B mtx: IA-107-S2(8)

Label: black type on coral blue, design unlike all other variations.

At bottom label states in fine print, "Manufactured by Quality Records."

Publishing: no credits

Pressing: Quality Records?
Distribution: Quality Records

Playtime: 2:22 (listed as 2:20) / actual unconfirmed

COMMENTS: Even rarer 2nd Canadian variation, of which only 2 copies have been seen. Note that this copy says "Manufactured by..."; as opposed to "Distributed by..." on the other Canadian release. Judging by the matrix numbers, this was pressed from new stampers.

PRESSING #18

HANSA 19188 (Germany – Late 1966?)

Playtime: 2:22 (listed as 2:20) / actual unconfirmed

COMMENTS: Obscure German release with an art/title sleeve. Not easy

to find.

PRESSING #19

RIVIERA 231240 (France - Late 1966?)

Playtime: 2:22 (listed as 2:20) / actual unconfirmed

COMMENTS: The French EP that combines all 4 sides from the
YGMM and Reverberation 45s. Released with an art sleeve. One

of the rarest Elevators artefacts.

PRESSING #20

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (1969)

A mtx: IA-2054

B mtx: IA-2055

Label: White with globe logo on left of hole. "Featuring Roky

Erickson" beneath group name.

Publishing: Tapier

Pressing: Southern Plastics (Nashville)

Playtime: 2:26 (listed as 2:24)

COMMENTS: Promo/DJ version. The 45 was remastered for this 1969-70 reissue and the fadeout reverted back to the slightly longer playtime of the earliest pressings. The master was probably derived from the first LP mixdown tapes. Thís promo version isn't particularly rare.

PRESSING #21

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS 107 (1969)

A mtx:

B mtx:

Label: Yellow with globe logo on left of hole, IA:s standard design at the time. "Featuring Roky

Erickson" beneath group name.

Publishing: Tapier

Pressing:

Playtime:

COMMENTS: See #20 above. This is an ultra-rare stock label version, of which only 1 copy is currently known to exist.
