The Play

The play takes play in a fictitious residential home, (and is no way connected to Leonard Cheshire homes). It was written and conceived by the members of the Revellers.

Scene 1: Eric Apex's (Head of the Home) Office

It opens with Rosie Parker, the local gossip and resident cleaner, entering the office of the head of the home, Eric Apex. Eric is slumped over his new exercise bike. Rosie goes about her cleaning, chatting away to Eric who does not seem in the talkative mood. Eventually Rosie goes over to Eric and asks him to move out of the way so she can finish her cleaning, giving him a playful nudge. Eric full to the floor. Rosie screams!

Scene 2: Lounge/Dining room

Meanwhile, in the lounge/dining room of the Manor we see Cy Lance, the quite resident who keeps himself to himself, and Wynn Jarr the complaining resident. Cy is reading the "Financial Times". Wynn, who claims to have visions and is well into the Occult, sits and consults his horoscope. Geoff the chef enters to offer the two some more tea, and as usual, Wynn complains so Geoff leaves. Wynn constantly badgers Cy to tell him his birth-sign so that he can read him his horoscope, but Cy just ignores him. Jen Teal, the carer joins the residents and sits down for a break after helping serve breakfast. Wynn continues to annoy Cy until eventually Cy can take no more tells Wynn to shut up as he is examining his stocks and shares. Geoff is coming for his break, and requests a few tips from Wynn's in-site to the future.

Rosie enters in a state of shock muttering, "He's gone, he's gone". "Who?", the others enquire. "Mr. Apex" says Rosie. "Of course he's gone, it's his day off", replies Jen. "No! I mean he's dead" explains Rosie. Everyone is in disbelief as Rosie is known to have a drinking problem, but Jen goes off the check, just to keep Rosie happy.

Two strangers enter the lounge. The introduce themselves as DI Burnside of CID and Inspector Munro of the local police, and explain that they have come to see Mr. Apex. Jen returns and Geoff tells Jen that the policemen have come to see Eric. "They can't", says Jen sobbing, "Eric he... he really is dead!"

Scene 3: Interviews in storage room

The two policemen have set up a storage room as a temporary interview room. It becomes clear from the conversation between the two that Munro has come to do a routine security check of the home. Burnside, on the other hand, has come to investigate some insurance claim irregularities. Munro wants to dismiss Apex's death as natural causes, but Burnside is convinced that it is murder because solving the crime would enhance his reputation in the force.

Rosie is the first to be interviewed, as she discovered the body. After the routine questions she is asked if she knew anyone who may have wanted Eric Apex dead. Never one to pass up a good opportunity for spreading gossip, she informs the police that Jen Teal had just been jilted by Eric. Rosie also suggests that Jen may have drugged Eric as she was in charge of the drugs cabinet.

The second person to be interview is Jen Teal, the senior carer. When asked who is now in charge of the home, she reveals that she is as she has been under Eric Apex for some time. Burnside remarks "In more ways then one," revealing that he knew she and Apex were lovers and she had just been jilted. Suggesting that she had murdered Eric Apex, either to get promotion or to punish him for jilting her, Jen reveals that there was someone else who may have killed Apex, Geoff the Chef. Jen had recently found out that Geoff and Eric had a meat scam going where Geoff would buy cheap meat and get Eric to put it through the books as prime meat and they would share the profits. She believed that Geoff must have gotten greedy, as she thought he was a nasty piece of work, and poisoned Eric with the arsenic he kept for the rats.

After Jen has left the room, Munro says "These places are all the same, always on the fiddle". "Why do you say that?" enquires Burnside. "I know", replies Munro, "my aunt Petunia was in a place similar to this one".

The interviews continues with Geoff the Chef, a street-wise character. Burnside tells Geoff that he knows about the meat scam. Geoff says there was now harm in it. He was buying cheap European meat that was British Standard Equivalent, (he knew because it was labelled B.S.E.). The scam had just finished as the moany resident, Wynn Jarr, had found out and was going to report it to the trustees. Apex was trying to get Wynn transferred to another home. Geoff thought that Wynn was unstable and may have put a voodoo curse on Apex.

Burnside allows Munro to ask a few questions. "So you keep arsenic?" asks Munro. "Only in case we get rats", replies Geoff. "You were cooking the books. You people are all the same, stealing from those that are weaker than you. Let me tell you, there is more that one way to kill a rat!" bursts out Munro. Geoff and Burnside are stunned. Burnside dismisses Geoff then reprimands Munro.

Next to be interviewed is Wynn Jarr. It is obvious that mind and body are not in the same place at the same time. Wynn tells the policemen about the meat scam, but thinks that the quite, newest resident Cy Lence gives off bad vibes. "Things started to go missing when he came", reports Wynn, "keeps himself to himself and doesn't seem to want to talk or get friendly with any of the residents".

The final interview is with Cy Lence. He is highly educated and looks down on people less intelligent than him. During the interview, Burnside is called out of the room to answer the telephone. Munro seems to vaguely recognise Cy, thinking that he may have arrested him in the past. Burnside re-enters. Cy replies that he has never been in trouble before, but somehow remembers Munro from his past but cannot place him. Cy starts to interrogate Munro to try and find out where they have seen each other before. Burnside, felling he has lost control of HIS interviews decides to terminate the interrogations.

"I think we should go for natural causes and get out of here as soon as possible" suggest Munro. "So do I", agrees Burnside. "Who was the call from?" enquires Munro. "The Commissioner. He wants me to go with him to the races this afternoon, so the sooner we clear this up, the better", replies Burnside.

Scene 4: Private Thoughts

Each of the interviewees gives their candid private thoughts about the death of Eric Apex.

Rosie reveals that Apex had found out about some petty thieving convictions in her past and was blackmailing her into working a scheme that was making them money.

Jen is distraught at the death of Apex. It is clear that she had deep feelings for Eric. Now she was temporary in charge she will make a few changes, like get rid of Geoff the Chef. She'll have to watch her back thought, just in case Geoff was responsible for Eric's death.

Geoff does not seem put out by Eric's death. Eric wanted a larger percentage of the meat scam profit, Geoff was determined to make sure that he didn't. Now Apex was gone, any changes made he was going to ensure were to his benefit.

Wynn senses evil in the home. His sixth sense was telling him that Apex was murdered, and that Cy was connected to it in some way.

Cy sometimes suffers from black-outs and cannot remember things. Was he responsible for the thefts and could not remember? At this last home the head there dead too. The police said it was suicide, but Cy believed she had no reason to commit it. Was it somehow related, or did he just bring bad luck wherever he went?

Interval

A chance for the audience to decide whether it was murder, suicide, or natural causes, and for those that opted for murder to select who done it.

Fiona Peacock then entertained the audience with a few songs before all is revealed.

Scene 5: Lounge/Dining Room

Rosie and Jen are arguing about Rosie telling the police about Jen's affair. Geoff enters to calm them down as he wanted the police to leave as soon as possible. Cy enters and enquires if anyone had seen Munro before. Jen suggests that Geoff might, but no-one does.

Wynn enters in a trance. "I've seen Eric on his journey. Someone here is not all he seem to be". "Eric was on an exercise bike that's fixed to the floor," retorts Geoff, "he'll never get anywhere on that. As for someone not being all he seems to be, just look in the mirror". Wynn still in a trance continues, "I see the letters NUM, or NUM, oh my head, my head", then passes out. Geoff says "NUM, numb. The only thing numb around here is your head.

The two policemen arrive and announce that they were going to treat Eric's death as natural causes, but they were going to investigate the real reason for Burnside being there, a spate of thefts. Everyone seems amazed at this and ask what has been stolen. Burnside produces a list and reads out several of the items on it. The last item, a television belonging to Eric Apex, had been found in Cy's room. Cy says that he bought the tele from Apex. The others tell Burnside that the items went "missing" and were found later. Munro accuses Cy of getting cold feet or not being able to fence those items and hadn't time to sell the tele. Geoff remembers that his gold medallion went missing in September and Cy arrived just before Christmas so was not at the home. An insurance claim had been put in, but Rosie had found it and Eric Apex said he had cancelled the claim. It turns out that all the items were subject to insurance claims and all found by Rosie. Rosie admits that Apex blackmailed her into hiding things, he would then put in a claim, she would 'find' them a little later and would split the insurance money with Apex.

Wynn suddenly jumps up and has another vision. "I have a message. A message from Aunt Petunia. 'What have you done, what have you done? I brought you up a good boy. Thou shalt not kill, Obediah, thou shalt not kill!'". Wynn slumps back down in his chair.

"Obediah!", exclaims Cy, "Obediah Munro! You were the policeman that investigated the death of Miss Peak at my old home in Dudley. You had a beard then, and didn't have spectacles, but it WAS you. Wynn said or NUM, that's Munro backwards". Munro denies ever being in Dudley. Burnside had mentioned Munro to the Commissioner earlier and had been informed that Munro had been transferred from Dudley. Munro confesses to murdering Miss Peak and Apex, not the only two to have suffered at his hands. m.p.h. on the exercise bike released a small electric charge to cause a heart attack, making it look like natural causes.

Burnside demands to know why Munro committed the crimes. Munro reveals that his rich Aunt Petunia had brought him, but when she got old she wanted to be put into one of the foundation's homes as she did not want to be a burden on her nephew who was just starting a promising career in the police force. She liked the home so much that just before she died she changed her will to leave everything she owned to the foundation, everything that should have gone to Munro. "Get rid of the heads, and the few corrupt ones like Apex go, the one's that force old ladies to sign over their fortunes. Get rid of the figureheads and the foundation will crumble".

Burnside says "Obediah Munro, I am arresting you on suspicion of murder ..."
