Decía Kierkegaard, que la angustia es el vértigo de la libertad, surgiría la angustia en opinión de filósofo danés-- cuando "al querer el espíritu poner la síntesis, la libertad fija la vista en el abismo de su propia posibilidad y echa mano de la finitud para sostenerse". La síntesis que busca el espíritu es en esencia estética.  Pero nunca se logra del todo, porque lo estético es una búsqueda de la infinitud que, paradójicamente siempre encuentra un límite: su transgresión produce el arte.

Mario Patiño es uno de esos artistas impelidos constantemente a la transgresión, pero poseído por una lucidez angustiosa.  De ahí que una de las más evidentes características de su arte sera el diálogo perene entre lo racional y lo irracional.  La forma en que ese diálogo se hace más aparente es la contradicción incesante de lo figurativo y lo abstracto.  Su manifestación más subterránea es la convivencia de dos mundos: uno supuestamente real y el otro absolutamente pictórico.

El Mundo real de Mario Patiño es el mundo del dolor; su mundo pictórico el del color.  Tales son los temas fundamentales que el trabaja, tratando de aprehenderlo en su perspectiva histórica.  Tanto el dolor como el color son fenómenos sociales que generan en el ser humano una conducta determinada, a veces convencional.

Existe un orden de la pena como existe un orden cromático.  Pero el primero pertenece a la esfera de lo marginal.  En los cuadros de Patiño la pena tiene que ver específicamente con el cuerpo, la enfermedad, la violencia física, la androgínia, el sexo frustrado, estigmatizado o mutilado.  La pena es también cultura.  Se aprende y se tranmite de padre a hijo, de hombre a hombre, del verdugo a la vícitma.  La pena se convierte en el ámbito cultural de los desplazados.  Este ámbito es el que muchas veces determina la sicología y la finonomía de todo un pueblo.  Tal vez por eso la obra de Patiño ha sido calificada -como el mismo afirma- "de étnica, patética y desquiciada"..

No creo que sean malos calificativos.  La pena tiene una determinación étnica (también como la tiene el color), sus significados son ciertamente patéticos y su expresión es irracional.

Me detengo pudoroso ante la psibilidad de usar el término surrealismo.  Queda claro que la irracionalidad y el absurdo que a veces se enseñorean de los cuadros de Patiño no son el resultado de un juego burgués con las convenciones de lo real.

Mario Patiño ha conocido el vértigo de la libertad. Su caracter obsesivo, su compromiso tan íntimo con la angustia de la creación, y sobre todo, con la angustia de vivir, es lo que lo convierte en una de las personalidades más fuertes entre los artistan que actualmente trabajan en México.

         Kierkegaard said, that anguish is the vertigo of freedom, would anguish arise in opinion of Danish philosopher -- when " wanting the spirit to hold the synthesis, freedom fixes sight into the abyss of its own possibility and makes use of the finite to keep itself from falling". The synthesis the spirit looks for is aesthetic in essence. But it is never absolutely obtained, because the aesthetic is a search of infinity that, paradoxicalally always finds a limit: its transgression produces art.

 Mario Patino is one of those artists impelled constantly to transgression, but possesed by a distressing lucidity. For that reason one of the most evident characteristics of his art is the perennial dialogue between the rational and the irrational. The  way in which that dialogue becomes more apparent is the incessant contradiction of figurative and abstract work. Its deeper manifestation is the coexistence of two worlds: one supposedly real and the other absolutely pictorial.

The real World of Mario Patino is the world of pain; its pictorial world is the one of color. Such are the fundamental subjects he works, trying to apprehend them in their historical perspective.  Pain as much as color is  a social phenomena that generates, in human beings,  a determined conduct, sometimes very conventional.

An order of the pain exists, as a chromatic order also exists. But the first belongs to the sphere of the marginal. In the works of Patino pain has to do specifically with the body, disease, physical violence, androgínia, frustrated, stigmatized and mutilated sex. The pain is also culture. It is learnt and transmited from father to son , from man to man, from executioner to victim. Pain becomes the cultural scope of the displaced ones. This scope is the one that often determines the psicology and the culture of a whole ethnic. Perhaps, for that reason the work of Patino has been described - as he affirms " of ethnic, pathetic and deranged "..

I do not believe they are bad qualifyings. Pain has an ethnic determination  (as it has color), its meaning is certainly pathetic and its expression is irrational.

 I stop puerile before the posibility to use the term surrealistic. It is clear that the irrationality and the absurd which sometimes dominate the works of Patiño are not the result of a bourgeois game with the conventions of reality.

Mario Patiño has known the vertigo of freedom. His obsessive character, his so intimate commitment with the angst of creation, and mainly, with the angst of living, turns him into one of the strongest personalities among the artists working at the moment in México.
