Oxycirrhites typus

The Longnose Hawkfish is one of the most popular of the hawkfish. They are a very interesting fish to watch and have very intricate and colorful markings. They have tufts (typical of hawkfish) on the dorsal fin rays and the nostrils, and there coloration is to mimic the Gorgonian Color that they live in. They do this almost perfectly.

This fish is among the hardiest saltwater fish there are.

Maintenance:

All Hawkfish are carnivores. They do well on a diet which includes all kinds of live, frozen, and sometimes flake foods. Brine shrimp, a basic staple food. Krill is also good. These fish are REEF SAFE, although very small delicate Shrimp, and certain very small crabs MAY sometimes be consumer. Make this one of the last additions to your tank, as they can sometimes be aggressive towards new arrivals.

Habitat:

Found in the Western Pacific, from the Philippines to Japan, Samoa, The Great Barrier Reef, and New Caldonia. They mainly inhabit depths of 33 - 60 ft.

Social Behaviours:

Found singly on the reef with one male presiding over a territory that will include 2 to 7 females.

Sex: Sexual differences:

The male is usually larger. It is thought that the male has an extra black edge on the ventral and tail fins.

Breeding/Reproduction

This Hawkfish has been bred for over 10 years, although it's very rare. The female lays adhesive eggs, which may be a unique factor among Hawks.

Length/Diameter of fish:

Adults can grow to 10 cm (4 inches).

Minimum Tank Length/Size:

A minimum 30 gallon aquarium is recommended.

Water Movement: Weak, Moderate, Strong

No special requirements.

Water Region: Top, Middle,Bottom

Usually spends most of its' time perching on rocks high in the tank, or sitting near the bottom

Availability:

This fish is not too hard to find, and price varies from 20-45$ US. Most likely around 25$ at a good fish store.
