After Mario got injured by a kamikaze paratroopa, he stepped in and helped the W.V.B.A. as a senior referee.  He signed on for a few years as a part-time job and eventually decided to retire from his referee duties due to Shigeru Miyamoto’s high demand for Mario in other games.  Unfortunately when Next Level Games revived the Punch-Out series for the Wii and offered Mario a referee position, Mario declined because they couldn’t reach the pay that Mario was demanding.  That is why Master Phred hired Luigi to be a referee in his second Punch-Out hack, Phred’s Cool Punch-Out 2 Turbo.
