1. 2x4 Labels

Q: How can I print the Avery #8463 label sheet that provides two across, five down, each label 2 X 4-inches?

A: Select the Print icon. Select the Custom button. Choose the 3 Hole Paper from the Name Paper drop-down menu. Do the following steps in this sequence: (1) Place a check mark in the Create Multi-section Templates box. (2) In the Number of Sections set it at 2 horizontal and 5 vertical. (3) In the Template Margin set right and left margins to 0.25 inches, set the top and bottom margins to 0.5 inches.

Now go up to the Paper Size and set it for 8.5 Width and 11 Height. Finally, set Paper Margins right and left to 0.25 inches and top and bottom to 0.1 inches. Then "Save as" Avery #8463 or whatever other name you wish.

Next, go into Edit Design, choose a design that will allow you to hide the Directions field. Note: Some designs permit that while others don't. Be sure that the design you pick also allows you to align the Notes field horizontally in position and width as the Title field. I also suggest you reduce the font size for the Title field and, if necessary, for the Note field to make everything fit on the label.

Also, after you have checked all the fields you want to hide, then in addition to making sure the Note field aligns horizontally with the Title field, you need to be sure to drag the Note field up to and abut the Title field. If there's a large vertical space between the two, the Title field will print on one label and the Note field will print on another.

Finally, in the Palette window, choose the Page tab and for Paper choose the Avery #8463 or whatever you named it. Then make sure the Number Pages option is unchecked. For the Start option, choose either On next page or On next column, whichever seems to work best with your printer. Choose the Hide tab and check everything except Title and Notes. You will probably want to save this design to another name to call up later.

Note that the margins set under the Template Margins set the margins for the 8.5 X 11-inch paper size while the margins under Paper Margins set the margins for the 2 X 4-inch labels.

I tried this on two printers, one is an Epson Laser and the other is an Epson 600 inkjet. I did note that the laser would inexplicably skip a label once in a while but the inkjet did fine.

2. A Cookbook with Epson Sylus 740 Printer

Printing A Cookbook With MasterCook and Epson Sylus 740 printer

This cookbook is printed on both sides of full sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 in. paper.

1. First I sorted my cookbook by categories on the screen.
2. Selected a couple recipes from a cookbook.
3. Pressed the Print icon.
4. Adjusted my printer settings (color settings/quality) by using the Properties button in the MasterCook Print window (upper right corner).
5. Design: MC Default Design.
6. Paper: Letter 8 1/2 x 11 in.
7. Checkmark for Number pages beginning with: 1.
8. No checkmark for Reverse Print Order.
9. Number of copies: 1.
10. Print range: Current Recipe(s).
11. Include: (a) Title Page, (b) Table of Contents, (c) Recipes Embedded Recipes, (d) Recipe Index, (e) Category Index.
12. Print On: Long Side. Checkmark for Flip Manually.
13. Orientation: Portrait.
14. Pressed Print button.

I got the dialog that says, "MasterCook has printed the front faces of the pages in the current print job. You should now flip over and reinsert the paper to print the back faces. Click the OK button when you have flipped the paper." [OK] [Cancel] It then proceeds to print the front faces.

15. After it finishes printing the front faces I then reversed the order of the pages and reinserted the stack with the blank sides face up and the top of the pages inserted downward and pressed the OK button.

It then proceeds to print the back faces of the pages.

16. After the print job is complete I reverse the order of the sheets.

And my printed cookbook is in order: Title Page, Table of Contents, first category heading, recipe, second category heading, recipe, Recipe Index, Category Index. Pages are numbered correctly.

3. Avery 8387 Labels

Q: I have been trying to get the recipe card to print. I can get it to use one of the four spots for one recipe to print at one time. I would like to find out how I can get more than one recipe at a time to print.

A: Are you using the name tag Avery form: #8387 - with 4 cards, to be printed landscape?

I just tried this and here are the steps:

* Sort by ratings.
* Select 4 recipes (ones that will fit, one recipe per card).
* Click the printer icon.
* Uncheck Print Embedded Recipes.
* Uncheck Number Pages.
* Select paper: Avery #8387 (5.5x4.25 card).
* select Landscape orientation.
* Click Edit design. Click Palette.
* Select and edit a design.
* Click the Page tab. Make sure landscape is selected and number pages is not selected. Set up start recipe on next page.
* Adjust the size of the text boxes (another way to adjust the right-hand margin.) See note below.
* Select print preview to check your results.
* Print.

Note: The Avery selection comes set to 0 margins all around. It's up to us on the design layout to set margins to fall inside of the printer's print zone. Check your printers manual for that information.

4. Blank Pages Printing

Q: Can you tell me what causes a blank page to print before a recipe.

A: Check the properties of your printer driver (my computer | printer | [your printer] ). Look around - using on the first set up page, for "separator page" - set this to none.

Also, when printing more than one recipe you will notice a red letter printing on a page by itself. This is a placeholder for the category subheadings.

WORK-AROUND: The alphabet letter placeholders will disappear if you sort the cookbook by Ratings (instead of by name or category) before printing. However, sorting by ratings will only work if you do not have ratings active in that cookbook.

If you only have one rating active for the cookbook and then sort the cookbook by ratings before going to print cookbook, you will get a "place-holder" page with that rating name on it. If only part of the recipes in the cookbook are rated, you will have another "place-holder page" with "No ratings entry" on it.

For the recipes that have ratings, the recipes with the lowest number rating will print first. (Those with 0 will print before those with 5.) If several recipes have the same rating, say a 3, then they will print in alphabetical order in a group.

5. Book of Booklets

I've recently published my cookbook of 255 recipes 300 pages long, without printing in the ‘normal´ way. The normal way of printing the cookbook is to choose from the Print/Publish Recipes window for the Print Range option set to Entire Cookbook. What the program will do when this option is chosen is to number the pages sequentially 1 to 300 for the entire book without a break. The major problem with using this option is that it is very inflexible for making future changes which are almost inevitable. Say that you want to add a recipe to the middle of the book. After doing so, you may think that just 1/2 the book would have to be printed. Not so. You have to print the whole book again to correct the Table of Contents and any of the Indices (Recipe and/or Category).

Rather than do that, I've chosen to treat the book as a group of booklets, whose printing is independent of each other. Now, the addition of a recipe to one of the booklets means to reprint just that one booklet to bring your cook book up to date. What is in each booklet depends upon how you choose to sort the cookbook (sort by Author, Alphabet, Category, Cuisine, etc.) I chose to sort by Category. Each of the booklets are independently numbered starting with page 1. The booklets when printed includes their own Title Page and Table of Contents that shows what pages each recipe is printed on. The booklets are then bound in a three-ring binder with dividers indicating the selected categories, such as Poultry, Sandwiches, Desserts, etc.

In the back of the book is a Recipe Index showing the category for every recipe listed alphabetically. This tells you indirectly where you can find the recipe if you know its name. Creating this index was the biggest problem, but once made, it will be easy to maintain. The steps taken to create it were (1) print a Table of Contents (without page numbers) for the whole cookbook. (2) Scan the list into a word processor. (3) Create a two column table from this list with the category entered into the second column corresponding to each recipe.

Normally, if the Recipe index option for printing a cookbook is selected, an index will be printed at the end of the cookbook. The index lists the title of each recipe in alphabetical order with the page numbers listed after each recipe. However, if the cookbook is a book of category booklets the page numbers are not listed for each recipe. The category/categories are listed instead. To locate the recipe then, the category booklet is turned to where the page number is listed in its own Table of Contents. This is a very flexible and efficient way in organizing and maintaining a cookbook. The concept is based on the fact that page numbers for recipes are quite variable during a cookbook´s development, whereas the category for the recipe isn't variable. Also, most cookbooks are organized by category such as Breads, Meat Dishes, Seafood, etc.

There are two ways to create a Recipe Index for a cookbook of booklets. The first and best way would have the program print it for you. The second way is to generate it yourself. In the above reference the procedure suggested was "(1) print a Table of Contents (without page numbers) for the whole cookbook. (2) Scan the list into a word processor. (3) Create a two column table from this list with the category entered into the second column corresponding to each recipe.

A problem with step 3 is that the categories are entered manually into the table which is a slow process because each succeeding recipe in the alphabetical list of recipes is likely to be different. Thus, to keep a correct account of recipe/category correspondence is time consuming and highly error prone process. A second more mechanical way is do change the first step to (1) Print a Table of contents for each category booklet. Then (2) is to scan each list into the word processor. Now, in step (3), there is no question as what category is to be entered into the 2nd column. When all the Recipe index tables are created in a single word processor file, the tables are merged and then the resulting table is sorted alphabetically for the 1st column.

This table is then printed for inclusion into the cookbook.

6. Booklets

Recently I've been successfully printing booklets on 8 ½ x 11 paper using MasterCook. I've had experience printing booklets using Microsoft Publisher for Windows and have used this tool to do so with MasterCook recipes by exporting to text format and importing them into Publisher. These booklets, as with books, are printed on both sides of the paper with two pages on each side. Also the paper is printed with landscape orientation. The booklet is assembled by stapling in the middle of the stack of paper and then the stack is folded at the middle. MS Publisher has the capability of correctly numbering these pages. Standard word processors can't do this which includes MS Word. A characteristic of the page numbering is that the sum of the pages on the left and right side of any sheet is a constant. To my pleasant surprise, MasterCook can do this. Incidentally, some people think of booklets as printing two pages on just one side of the paper which are then individually folded and then stacked together and stapled along the left side. Perhaps MasterCook can support this type printing, but I don't know if it can. I've noticed that for you recommend to MasterCook version 5 to try some of the tips that others have shared on the forum for printing two recipes on one side of the paper. One of the tips described printing on 8.5 x 14 paper which was subsequently cut in half. Recently, a MasterCook user expressed frustration with this tip (Jeanne Insalaco) in her desire "...on using a regular size computer paper to make my booklet..." My explanation of how to do that is included in Re: Publishing a cookbook (help) as of Fri Feb 4 17:32:54. The explanation given here is just for printing the recipes of the cookbook. The procedure is easily be extended to include some of the remaining options. For now, I include in the printing the body of a cookbook separate from the rest of the sections. The body is just the recipes. I would suggest starting out in Recipe Browser window to print just a small selection of the cookbook recipes. For example start out by selecting and printing just 4 recipes, then 8, 16,...etc. This will give confidence in the process before selecting Print Range as the Entire Cookbook.

Assuming that selected the recipes have been selected to print then click on the print icon which brings up the Print/Publish Recipe window. Then select a particular recipe Design; Paper = 8.5 x 11 in (don't choose Booklet on Letter), and check Number Pages beginning with 1, Include selection = Recipes; Print range selection = Current Recipe(s); Print on selection =: Short Side; and Orientation = Landscape. Here´s where the primary booklet conditions are set with 8.5 x 11 inch paper landscape printing with 5.5 W x 8.5 H inches per page that is desired.

Now, click on Edit Design button, the recipe design window comes up. Then click the Palette button which brings up the Publish Palette window. Then click the Page tab. This window should show Paper=8.5 x 11 in, Columns=1, and Orientation=Landscape. I selected Start=´One after another´, and entered checks for Folded Booklet, and Number Pages Beginning With: 1. The Start conditions are multiple choice with Start=´On next page' giving a cleaner looking document (but with additional pages).

Now, we have access to the Custom paper button. Select this if you want to change the margin values*. Otherwise, move on to selecting Print Preview... to check the printing and actual printing if it looks okay. I think that Sierra has made actual pamphlet printing a rather simple procedure. Load your printer with a stack of paper. Maybe only one sheet is actually needed say for a 4 recipe booklet print. The number of sheets is not important just keep feeding the input hopper if the printer gets hungry. After you have selected the Print, printing will proceed until about half of the booklet cookbook is printed. How do you know this has occurred? A message automatically comes up and tells you that time has arrived. The message is MasterCook Publish which says in part "Wait until first side has finished. Then place pages back into the paper tray, printed side towards the rear and for BOOKLET: DO NOT rotate the paper, keeping the top up." After all sheets have printed with this message showing, then remove all unprinted sheets from the input of the printer. Then take the pile of printed paper from output and return to input tray of printer for printing of the 2nd half. Then press OK on the message window to continue. The middle sheet of your document should show consecutive page numbers for the left and right side for example page 9 on the left and page 10 on the right side of the sheet.

The printing procedure, just described does not change when the Title Page, Table of Contents, and Recipe Index is included as options shown on the Print/Publish Recipes window. You still wait for the "half-way" signal from the program before reinserting the half printed sheet stack.

7. Booklets with Epson Stylus Printer

NOTES: I am using an inkjet printer (Epson Stylus Color 740), so YMMV (your mileage may vary) depending on your printer. My printer does NOT allow me to print on both sides of a sheet of paper. If your printer does, you may need to disable it or disable the Flip Manually setting mentioned below in step #5g.

I am using a cookbook that doesn't have ratings, because I will sort by Ratings to avoid the placeholder (those single letters that print on their own sheet of paper) for category names, etc.

1. Open a cookbook (I chose Casual Dining.) to the Recipe Browser (where you see your recipe titles).
2. Choose Ratings from the Sort By drop-down list. (This is the order the recipes will print.)
3. Highlight 8 recipe titles from the Recipe Browser. (You can choose more or less recipes or even the whole cookbook.)
4. Select the Print icon.
5. In the Print window, I have these options selected:
a. My Epson printer.
b. Casual Dining design. (Chose whatever design you wish.)
c. Letter 8 1/2 x 11 paper.
d. Checkmark for Number Pages. (This will help you when putting the pages in the correct order when the printing is all completed.)
e. Print Range = Current Recipe(s).
f. Include = Recipes and Embedded Recipes. (You can include more items.)
g. Print On = One side. There is a checkmark in the dimmed box for Flip Manually. (You may need to select Long Side or Short Side to put a checkmark in this box. You can experiment with this setting.)
h. Orientation = Landscape.
6. Select the Edit Design button to open up the Edit Print Design window.
7. In the Edit Print Design window select the Palette button to open up the Palette window.
8. Choose the Page tab.
9. Select One After Another from the Start drop-down list.
10. Add a checkmark in the Folded Booklet box.
11. Select the Print Preview button.
12. Select the Print button.
13. If the main Print window appears again, select the Print button there too.

RESULTS: It prints the first side of the pages and prompts me to re-insert the paper. The paper comes out print side up.

14. I reverse the order of all the papers, so that the paper that was on the bottom is now on the top, and the paper that was on top is now on the bottom.
15. I reinsert the paper in the tray with the ending edge (the edge that came out of my printer last) going in first.
16. I select OK for the prompt to flip the paper over, and the back side of the pages are printed.
17. I reverse the order of all the pages once again, and my booklet is in the correct order.
18. I fold the pages in half, and I now have a 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 booklet.

Steps 14, 15 & 17 may vary depending on your printer. If you don't see page numbers printed, you may need to adjust your margins (increase them for the 8 1/2 x 11 paper).

Please be aware that you might not want your booklets to be so large that you have a hard time stapling them or folding them up.

8. Canon BJC-600

Q: When I print a recipe I get a message that says after the first side has printed turn the paper over and press OK. My setting is 'one side' and Flip Manually is NOT selected. Am I doing something wrong? My printer is a Canon BJC-600.

A: I have had my printer since 1993. Since it is so old, I downloaded the latest driver from the Canon web site. That fixed my problem.

9. Color Printing

Q: I am using an old HP 855-C color inkjet. When I go to Edit Design and change colors for my title, directions, ingredients headers, when I print, the output does not come out with the color that I chose. For example, I chose the color blue or fusia for the word "Ingredients". I am using yellow 4 x 6 cards. What prints out for the word "Ingredients" is the color black. Is it my color selection printing on a colored (yellow, in this case) card be the problem? Has anybody had any problems that I have - the printed output does not in anyway reflect the color you chose but rather just prints in plain black.

A: While it's true that the color of your paper will have a decided effect on the final color (it's part of the color mix), I doubt that it should be black. As a test, I just printed a recipe on a neon yellow paper and I used both blue and what I would have presumed to be your choice you called fusia. What I ended up with as would be expected from the color mix, was in the green direction, but there was no doubt that it was color. The printer I used is an Epson Stylus Color 600. I note you mentioned that you changed the Title, Directions and Ingredients, but then you only mentioned the Ingredients as having been in black. What did the other two fields print as? Another quick test is to print your recipe on white paper and see what colors, if any you get. If the Title and Directions are in color but the Ingredients are black, that would simply mean that your change of color didn't "take" in the Ingredients field.

10. Cookbook Name

Q: How can I print the cookbook name with the recipe like I was able to in MasterCook 4.0?

A: You can add a text label. Select the Palette button from the Edit Print Design screen and select the Object tab. Press the Insert Text button and type in your cookbook name. Then in the Print Layout pane, drag the text box to where you want it and size it the way you want it. You can also edit the font size, etc. in the Text tab.

In the MasterCook 5.02 manual on page 220 it states: "If you want to have the cookbook title printed on every page, check Include Cookbook Title (on Page Tab window)." Unfortunately, software updates have removed this option. Here´s how to restore this option assuming that a new page is started with each recipe. MasterCook 4 has this option. When this option was not hidden, the cookbook title would be printed first on each page. To obtain this equivalent capability in MasterCook 5.x/6.x, a text object needs to be created which will appear at the top of the Edit Print Design Screen. Currently, none of the layout designs supplied have text object in this desired position. It seems to me, that you have two choices. (1) Use the Insert Text option. A problem with using this option is that the text object is inserted at the end of the recipe. You are then faced with moving it to the beginning which can be a challenge. Particularly, if the beginning objects are crowded together, so that no open space exists where the title can be moved.. An somewhat easier method would be: (2) Choose a layout design where a blank text object already exists and which follows the recipe title at the top. These are frequently inserted in the recipe layouts to create a horizontal line below the title using a horizontal border at the top of the text object. Starting with this option, then choose the print icon which brings up the Publish Window, then choose Edit Design, click on Palette for display of the Publish Palette window, and click on the Object tab. The name of the recipe layout is shown as the Design selection. Choose a recipe design selection where a text object appears at top, such as Basic Design. Now, click on this text object which has the label "(No Text)." When you do, it will be outlined with two handles (black squares) showing on the left and right sides. Now, right click on the mouse which will bring up a window which will include Name as an option. When you choose this the Item Name window appears which includes the explanation "The name is also used for labeling text items when the option Show Field Labels is turned on." Type in an appropriate name such as "Cookbook Title" and click on OK. To check on what was entered, click on the Hide tab and it should show up as an option. Returning to the Object tab, the Border Lines should show a horizontal line highlighted on the top of the area. Change this so that it highlights the bottom of the area (first by clicking on no border, and then choosing bottom line). To enter the cookbook title, use the data entry area at the bottom of the Publish Palette window below the Insert Text button (which is not pressed). Now, we are left with interchanging the position of the recipe title and the cookbook title text objects. This may be somewhat like having two fat persons changing seats in a theater. There is simply no room for maneuvering around each other. Similarly with the two text objects, it is easier if they are both skinny. This is where the handles can be used. By contracting the width of the objects and moving them, their positions can be reversed.

Here is an easy way of providing room for the title: (1) From the Edit pull down window, click on "Select All" (Ctrl A). (2) Move cursor over recipe layout window, until 4 way move arrow appears. (3) Move all recipe objects down the page to allow space for the cookbook title text object. (4) Move title to top of object stack. (5) Select All objects again and move them back to the top of the display screen where they were originally.

Check on the changes by choosing Print Preview or Print Sample. If the results are satisfactory, then finally, click on File/Save Design As.. to change name of recipe design such as "Basic Design Modified".

11. Cookbook With Two Columns Per Page

Q: I would like to print my cookbook with two columns per page. While my MasterCook program permits this, it does not leave any space between the two columns, which looks quite ugly and is hard to read.

A: Open the Print window and select Edit Design. Open the Palette window and choose the Page tab. Select the number of columns you want. Select the Design Menu at the top of the screen, and on the Drop-down menu click on Grid Spacing. I suggest choosing the 9-point grid spacing. Now, click in the top field to highlight it. The highlighting in this case is a wide outline around the field. Along the right side of the field, you will see a small black rectangle about midway up and down the right side. Place you cursor over that small black rectangle and "play" with the exact positioning until you see a horizontal double arrow appear. Click on that arrow and drag the right vertical side to the left by one grid line spacing. Repeat that procedure for all fields, one by one.

On the Ingredients or Directions fields (or any other very tall field), you may have to scroll the vertical scroll bar to find that little black rectangle. It will be about midpoint between the top and bottom of the field.

Once that has been done, click on Preview and see if the resulting space that has been added between your columns is acceptable. If not, you may want to repeat the process and move the right side a little more to the left but I believe the 9-point is enough. When you like what you see, save your newly created design.

12. Editing Meal Plan Print Design

Q: How do I edit my meal plan?

A: We are not able to edit meal plans, just menus.  However, maybe you could try using the "easter egg" and see if something there would work? See the entry in this cookbook for Miscellaneous - Easter Egg.

13. Editing the Shopping List Design

If you open a recipe, go to Print/Publish, place a checkmark by shopping list, UNcheck to include the recipe, and then click on Edit Design, you will get the shopping list layout page.

CHANGING THE FONT OF THE SHOPPING LIST

1. Choose Edit > Select All
2. Click Palette
3. On the Text tab, change the color to anything.
4. The word "spacer" may appear in the layout area if you are using MC 5.x.
5. To remove the word "spacer", select the text box (in the left pane of the Edit Design screen) that holds "spacer", then click the OBJECT tab on the palette.
6. In the box at the bottom of that window, replace the word "spacer" with a space (hit the space bar once).

In version 6.x, this unwanted "spacer" text string no longer appears when we edit the shopping list fonts.

REMOVING UNWANTED COLUMNS

1. Choose a recipe.
2. Select the Print icon.
3. Remove the checkmark in the Print window for Recipes.
4. Add a checkmark for Shopping List.
5. Select Edit Design.
In Edit Print Design Window:

6. Under where it says Item, select the box that says "(No text.)"
7. Select Palette.
8. In the Object tab of the Palette under Border Lines choose the box in the upper left corner. This removes the solid black line. (If you want this black line to remain, then don't do this step.)
9. Highlight the box that contains Cost.
10. At the bottom of the Object tab replace the word "Cost" with a blank space.
11. Highlight the box that contains Coupon.
12. At the bottom of the Object tab replace the word "Coupon" with a blank space.
13. Highlight the box that contains (No Cost text.)
14. Right click on it and choose Hide.
15. Highlight the box that contains (No Coupon text.)
16. Right click on it and choose Hide.
17. Highlight the box that contains Recipe and drag the black square on the right side of the box across to the right margin.
18. Highlight the box that contains the recipe name and drag the black square on the right side of the box across to the right margin.
19. Select File > Save Design As and give it a name you will remember. Use this design when you print a shopping list.

14. Epson Printer Troubles

Q: I have updated my Epson printer. No problem with any of my other applications EXCEPT in MasterCook. When I press the Print/Publish button, I get the setup for the print job, and then I get the following message MASTERCOOK HAS PRINTED THE FRONT FACES OF THE PAGES IN THE CURRENT PRINTJOB. YOU SHOULD NOW FLIP OVER AND REINSERT THE PAPER TO PRINT THE BACK FACES. CLICK THE OK BUTTON WHEN YOU HAVE FLIPPED THE PAPER. OK CANCEL. Nothing has actually printed at this point. I did not flip the paper over! I find that I can override this problem by pressing the OK button. I never had this problem before I updated my printer. Is there a way to correct this problem?

A: I too have an Epson Printer (Photo Stylus 700), and I get the same thing if I don't take the tick out of the box "flip manually". I have to click on "long side", then take out the tick the flip manually box and then click back on "One side". I have to do this EVERY time I print out a recipe, or I get the same message as you got. If I forget and leave the tick in the flip box, MasterCook sends the front of the page(s) of the recipes to the printer and then the backs of the pages. (I experimented to see what would happen.) This means the printer will print out all the front pages, then you flip all the recipes you've printed out and put them back in the printer and the printer prints out the back pages of the recipes. BUT it doesn't seem to start printing anything until you click on OK to print.

If you're only printing one recipe, it doesn't make any difference, but if you print more than one recipe, then all the first pages of the recipes are printed first, then flip pages and print the second pages.

Without the tick in the flip box, MasterCook sends the recipes to the printer one at a time, all the pages in order as they are.

Q: How can I PERMANENTLY REMOVE this tick in the Flip manually box? I have checked the printer settings and properties and I can't see how I can remove it permanently (so it's not there every time I want to print a recipe).

A: This resets when you close the Print window.

It's been reported that this works better under WinXP.

15. Excluding Direction Pictures

Q: In some designs there are pictures included in the directions part of the recipe. How do I delete this picture?

A: If you want to delete the picture from the recipe, you can do this in the Recipe Edit view by right clicking on the picture in the direction section and choosing Remove Picture. Note: This will delete the picture from this recipe permanently if you save the changes. Otherwise, I would just use a design that doesn't include the picture. Another thing you could do is select to remove the picture. Then select the Print icon. Select the design you want. Choose Edit Design. You will then get prompted to save changes in the recipe. Select NO if you don't want to permanently delete the picture. Now in the Page Layout pane of the Edit Print Design screen the picture won't be in the directions any longer, and it won't print either.

16. Excluding Nutrition Summary From MealPlan

Q: Is there a way to keep the nutrition summary from printing in the MealPlan? The first page printed had my menu: Breakfast with the recipe titles listed, Lunch with the recipe titles listed and Dinner with the recipe titles listed. I did notice that on the first page it also printed the nutrition summary for each meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner.)

A: Unfortunately not for Meal Plans. This only applies to Menus. However, maybe you could try using the "easter egg" and see if something there would work? See the entry in this cookbook for Miscellaneous - Easter Egg.

17. HP DeskJet 895cxi Problem

Q: When printing a double sided cookbook on the HP DeskJet 895cxi, a message appears (generated by MasterCook) stating that the first side has printed, flip and click to print 2nd side. Also an additional 'double-sided printing instructions' window appears. The only identifier on this window is a small windows color logo. The printing is now thoroughly out of order because both of these sets of instructions are actively controlling the print order, etc.

A: The HP DeskJet 895cxi comes with a printer driver that supports 2 sided printing. Perhaps you have 2 sided printing set with the driver, as well as setting it with the cooking software. That would cause a conflict and might be what is messing you up. If so, then tell the 895cxi drive that you just want single sided printing."

18. HP LaserJet Printing Problem

Q: MasterCook will allow me to print ONE item -- one recipe, one shopping list, whatever -- and the next time I try to print I get a non-message (!) error. I have to close the program down and reopen it to print a second item. Ideas? Clues? Help? My printer is an HP LaserJet IIP.

A: I have an HP LaserJet. Mine is a bit newer than yours, however, I have found that if I try to print in Postscript mode, I have problems. However, it works just fine in Standard mode. I don't know if your printer has this feature, but you might try changing that setting.

19. Index

Q: When I print out my index I get the word "Index" about 1" down. How do I change this?

A: From the Print window select to include the Recipe Index from the bottom left corner. Select the Edit Design button. Select the Palette button from the Edit Print Design screen. Select Alphabetical Index from the Layout drop-down menu and select the Object tab. Select the recipe name that is in the Print Layout pane of the Edit Print Design screen. Now you can go back to the Object tab of the Palette and increase the size of the Inside Margin. This will allow for more spacing between the Index heading and the recipe names. However, it should have no effect on the printing of the recipes.

You can also increase the top margin of the page. Don't forget though that if you are using landscape, the top of the page is really the left side.

20. Index Cards

MasterCook 5.x/6.x do not print just the ingredients in two columns, but they can print the entire recipe in two columns.

Templates of Avery card forms (multiple cards per page) are included, and MasterCook can print the fronts of those forms. For double-sided printing of index cards, your success depends more on your printer's capabilities.

This info below is about how to print index cards on an HP printer from MasterCook 5.

I printed my first index card on my hp DeskJet 832C!

Design: We can save space by not putting each direction paragraph into its own row. We all know we need to hide all but the bare essentials to make it fit. The Index Card (4x6) design is a good choice for that.

If you edit another design, avoid using Control+A (select all) to move objects around or resize a font. There's a bug that introduces the unwanted line "your text here" when we use ctrl+A. This bug does NOT exist in version 6.x.

TIP: I have an HP printer. I checked their web site's online manual for my printer. Under the "using your printer" topic, a chapter called "How to Print on Different Types of Paper" That was very helpful! Maybe your printer has a manual online that will help.

For the hp DeskJet 832C the url is <http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpd06104.html#P84_5720>

Cookbook: Pick a recipe to print and click the printer icon.

Print/Publish setup: Choose Custom for the paper and select the Index Card (4 X 6-inch) size. Set margins (check the minimums recommended in the README.TXT file for your printer.) For my printer, I could use 0.5-inch all the way around. Save/Save As... the design with changes. Still on this page, choose "Landscape". Now click on the Edit Design button.

Edit design page: In the Palette window choose the Page tab If necessary and select the index card paper and make sure the margin changes were saved. Also double check that Landscape is still selected.

Print Preview: Tweak and save the design, print preview, until you're happy with the fit.

P.S. For two sided-printing, the only thing that works so far is to put one card in at a time and print one side. Wait for the "out of paper" beep. Reinsert card. (Be careful since the wet ink might smear!)

21. Index Cards with HP DJ 722C

Q: I have been trying to print on single index cards using the envelope slot on my HP DJ 722C. I have had to change my right margin to .67 to successfully get all the directions for the recipe to print. In doing so this has caused a complete blank line to appear in the preview of the recipe. Is this a bug? Do you have a resolution to this problem? I have been using the classic and checkered designs. I have changed the paper to custom and made the dimensions for the 4 x 6 card. Help! It doesn't look good with the blank line in the middle of the recipe.

A: It is hard to figure out your settings for inkjet printers, since each brand/model has a distinct printable area that margin adjustments in the software just won't change. I went to the HP site and there are a couple of things that might help.

For 720C series printers, HP recommends loading cards (up to 30) from the paper tray, not using the envelope slot. And here is what they say about printable area and suggested margins:

Printable area for 4 x 6 card, portrait: 3.75 x 5.5 in.

Minimum margins, Portrait:
Top: 0.04 inches
Bottom: 0.46 inches
Left: 0.125 inches
Right: 0.125 inches

Here is the url:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpd04730.html

You will probably need to fiddle around with the margins, basic MasterCook design, etc., to get the result you want. One thing I have to keep reminding myself about is that the "bottom" margin required for the printer is the last side of the paper to feed through and not necessarily the bottom of the finished document when you are looking at it right side up. That's because the printer needs a certain amount of paper to hold onto as it feeds the rest through, and this is different for each printer.

22. Index Cards: Both Sides of a Single Card

Q: I am looking for a way to print on 3 x 5 cards, but only print on one card. I have changed the settings in page setup, both to Avery 3 x 5, but when it prints out the recipe, it prints out on 3 different cards. Any way to get it to print only about half the recipe on one card, so I can flip it over and print the rest on the opposite side?

A: The current manual flip option for printing does not do the 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 pages.

Here is a work-around that may work for you:

This may not work with all printers and it is quite cumbersome, so that I only use it when a person specifically asks me to print on a card. Also, as you read below, you will realize this is strictly for one at a time --- no quantity printing.

The procedure: Go to Print/Publish and Edit Design. For paper, choose Custom and set the width to 3 inches and the height to 5 inches and set the margins to the smallest your printer will allow (you may have to "tinker" here). One reason for "tinkering" is that the printer may try to cut the top or bottom half off a line as well as needing some room to keep hold of the card. Save the size under a name of your choice so you can use it later. Also, be sure to choose landscape printing.

Now, for the end run --- place ONE card in your printer and print. When it prints to the bottom margin and ejects the card, ready to print the next card, you should get a message that the printer is out of paper (that's another place where this routine may be printer sensitive). Reinsert your card to print on the back side and, in my case, I press a button on the printer to tell it I've put fresh paper in it and voila, it finishes on the back side.

It can be messy and fussy with no guarantees, but I hope it works for you.

23. Inserting Graphics

Q: How do I add a graphic to the Title Page?

A: First you much choose to Include the Title Page from the lower left corner of the main Print window. When you select the Edit Design button this page will be available for you to edit from the Palette window from the Layout drop-down list. Then you can use the Object tab to insert an image or select Insert Graphic from the Design menu.

Acceptable graphic files are *.bmp, *. png or *.jpg.

Q: Is there anyway to copy a graphic in one design into another design?

A: The graphics are in the ClipArt folder on the SierraHome MasterCook CDs.

[ Top of Page ]

24. Inserting Graphics and Text

Q: Is there a quick way to insert text and/or graphics in the Edit Design screen and then move it anywhere within a recipe page? First, I am selecting the area where I wish to insert then choose either text or graphics. I can put graphics either at the top or bottom, text at the bottom only. Selecting it again, graphics I can move from the bottom to the top but nowhere in-between. Selected text remains at the bottom. What step(s) I am missing?

A: I use the menu to insert graphic or text object. then move them from the bottom to where I want them. Usually the other stuff (below it) just moves out of the way when I drop the graphic/text.

Sometimes layouts are trickier -- like the two column (ingredients left, instructions right) -- depending on where you want to put the graphic/text. Then you may have to move things down a ways and zoom in to see more of what you are selecting. Then insert and relocate. So it depends upon where the "in-between" is.

25. Landscape Right-hand Side Only

Q: I'm trying to print out cookbooks. The copy shop I'm working with wants it printed out so that the pages are ALL on the right side of the page. I have played with the print set up and can get it to print page 1 on one page, pages 2 and 7 on the next, pages 3 and 6 on the next, and pages 4 and 5 on the last. I want page 1 on one page, page 2 on another, etc. just on the right side of the page. They want to copy it this way so they can put two page 1's on the first page, 2 page 2's on the second, etc, so they can just cut the pages down the middle and it makes two complete books.

A: I assume that you have made your design based on the Folded Booklet. What you need to do is change the elements so the recipes are printed on one side of the 8 1/2 by 11 paper, landscape -- you do this by changing the margins for the letter-sized paper.

So, on the Print/Publish window, chose:
* Number Pages beginning with 1
* Paper = Letter 8 1/2 x 11
* Print on = one side
* Orientation = Landscape

From Edit Design, Palette, Page Tab, chose:
* Orientation = Landscape
* Number Pages beginning with 1
* Columns 1
* Then, for the paper I first selected Letter 8 1/2 x 11. I clicked the custom button and adjusted the margins. I changed the "Top" margin to be 6.25 inches, but left the other margins at their default setting. Then I saved the custom paper definition with a different name. The recipe display moved so that all recipes were in the position you wanted.

You may need to play with the margins a bit so that there is more space on the left side of the recipe, where the booklet will be bound, and not quite so much on the right side of the recipe, on the leading edge. That will depend on your printer. Use print preview a lot, and print a couple of recipes as a test before doing your cookbook.

[ Top of Page ]

26. Larger Font

Q: How do I print in a larger font? When I print a recipe the font is small and hard to read.

A: There is a design you can use that you might like. In the Print window select Large Print Menu from the Design drop-down list. That should meet your needs.

If you want to edit a design, choose the Edit Design button in the Print window. When the Edit Print Design screen comes up, use the Palette button. Select a block of recipe text in the left hand layout window and items on the text tab will be available for editing. See pages 155 through 165 in the MC 6 manual to find out how to edit a print design to your liking (or the chapter on Publishing in the MC 5 manual). You can choose Save As from the File menu, so you can save the design you edited without changing the ones included with the program.

[ Top of Page ]

27. Layout Menu

Q: On the Palette panel in the Edit Design screen, I see the small window near the top labeled "Layout" and the word "Body" in it. If I click on the arrow, the only choice I find is "Body". While reading the manual, I find that I'm supposed to be able to select the portion of the design I wish to edit, such as Title, Table of Contents, etc. How can I do this?

A: In the bottom left corner of the Print/Publish window you will notice check boxes for Title Page, Table of Contents, etc. If you put checkmarks in the boxes and then go to the Edit Print Design screen, you will have the available options besides body.

[ Top of Page ]

28. Lines Are Missing

Q: When my recipes go over to the next page, the first line is not printed. How come?

A: Maybe your printer doesn't support the margins you have selected. Try making the margins larger and see if that helps.

[ Top of Page ]

29. Order of Recipes/Divider Pages

You can sort your cookbook by different criteria before choosing to print, and this will affect your printed version. (Use the "Sort By" drop down box on the left hand side of the recipe browser screen, where all your recipe names are listed.)

"ALPHABET PAGES": When you have your cookbook sorted by recipe title or alphabet, and then choose to print it, you will have pages print with a single letter of the alphabet. These are separators or placeholders. To avoid them, you can sort your cookbook by Ratings if you do not have ratings active in that cookbook.

SORTED BY <empty>: If you do not have ratings active in your cookbook (none of the recipes are assigned a rating) and you sort it by ratings, there will be no separator or placeholders. The same can be said for sorting by any other field that is empty for the entire cookbook, i.e. author, cuisine, etc.

So, if you want to prevent placeholders from printing, sort first by an empty criteria. The placeholders won't print because there is nothing for it to print.

SORTED BY RATINGS: If you only have one rating active for the cookbook and then sort the cookbook by ratings before printing, you will get a placeholder page with that rating name on it. If only part of the recipes in the cookbook are rated, you will have another placeholder page with "No ratings entry" on it.

For the recipes that have ratings, the recipes with the lowest number rating will print first within the rating group. (Those with 0 will print before those with 5.) If several recipes have the same rating, say a 3, then they will print in alphabetical order in a group.

SORTED BY CATEGORIES: To print a cookbook by category, you can sort the cookbook by category first. However, you will then get a divider page that prints with the category name on it. This might work for you. Many people like to have a tab page dividing their categories.

EDIT PLACEHOLDER TEMPLATE: Another way to avoid the printed divider text is to edit its template. First sort by whatever order you want the recipes to print. Select more than one recipe before entering the Edit Print Design Screen. (If you select only one recipe, the following won't work.)

In the Edit Print Design screen click on the CHANGE RECIPE button. (This button allows you to see a preview of a different recipe other than the one currently showing in the Edit Print Design screen, therefore it will not be active unless one or more recipes are selected in the previous step.) Once you click this button, you will see the placeholder names inside the Change Recipe window that appears.

Click on one of these placeholder names (category name, if your cookbook is sorted by categories; an alphabet letter if your cookbook is sorted by title or alphabet, etc.) Doing so brings up the design layout for that particular placeholder.

Now you can hide the placeholder text (Select the text on the screen and right click to get the HIDE command) to prevent it from printing.

If you choose on Palette's Page tab to print your recipes "one after another", no placemarker text will print at all.

If you choose to print your recipes with each starting "on next page," a blank page will go through your printer with a page number (if you have those turned on to print), so if you don't want any text or image at all, it might be best to do as recommended early on in this topic (see: "SORTED BY <empty>" above.)

If you would like to edit the placemarker layout to change the font of the text, or its color or placement on the page, or to add a clipart design, you can do that just as you would to edit any layout.

30. Page Numbers Won't Print, etc.

Here is a printer/printing facts and check list to help us troubleshoot MC - mostly version 5 and 6 but the principles apply to earlier versions as well. Sometimes the page numbers don't print or the text bleeds or is truncated on the right edge. Here are some things to try.

PRINT/PUBLISH SCREEN:

The order in which we check things matters: Start by selecting the design, then turn page numbering on in the Print/Publish window. If we do it the other way around -- numbering on, then select a different design -- numbering is reset to no.

Check to see that the right paper is selected for your design. Paper and orientation.

Save some time by finding out if the numbers do print on another design. If they do, then you know it's something about the first design.

DESIGN EDITOR SCREEN:

For your information: page numbers show up when we print on paper or in the Print Preview screen. They do not show up in the layout panel, no matter how big the zoom.

Edit the design. Check the Palette's Page tab. Is page numbering checked? It should be if we checked it on the Print/Publish window. We have heard some people report that if they have to turn numbering on in the palette, it may not print. That's why I turn it on twice: in the Print/Publish screen and the Edit Design's Palette setup.

Margins need to be set within the print zone specific to your printer. To check it, compare the ruler markings (in the left panel of the design editing screen) to the Palette's margin settings. To turn the ruler on, open the "Design" menu and select "show rulers" To see the margin settings, turn on the Palette, Page tab, Custom button. For HP deskjet printers, see this table at hp

Try changing the font face. Make sure the font still exists. Windows does try to emulate a font that was deleted.

Try changing orientation from landscape to portrait, etc. Try printing single sheet, instead of double or booklet.

Consider getting a fresh copy of the original design from the cd. (Remember to reset the copied file's file properties from "read only" to "archive". Use My Computer's Explorer to locate the file, right click and select "properties".)

OTHER THINGS:

Do you need to update the printer driver? Check the website for you printer. There may be a bug fix or patch.

For double sided printing, try either letting MC control the printing, or your printer (if you have that option), but not both.

31. Printing to Text File for Sharing

Q: I want to create a text file of just the recipe names in one category of a cookbook.

A:
1. Copy the recipes to another cookbook. Select that cookbook.
2. Select Print/Publish Selected Cookbook from the Edit Menu.
3. In the Print window put a checkmark in the Table of Contents. Remove the checkmark from Recipes.
4. Select the Generic/Text Only printer, if you have this print driver installed from your Windows CD (you could install this print driver from your Windows CD if not).
5. At this point you will be prompted to name the file (*.prn). Give it a name and remember where you place this PRN file on your computer.

Now you can open this PRN file with NOTEPAD. You could save it as a text file or copy/paste the text into an e-mail to your friend.

--------------

Q: I don't have a Generic/Text Only printer listed, so what do I do?

A: Windows lets you have more than one printer driver. Use My Computer. Open the Printers folder. Select Add Printer. Locate the generic/text printer and load the driver from the Windows CD. Do NOT assign it as your default printer. When you want to print something to a file select that printer. Otherwise, if you use your default printer to print a file, all you are doing is making a copy of a file that only your printer can translate.

--------------

Q: Can I use this techique of printing to a file for other things?

A: Yes you can!

Use it to quickly create a text file of your shopping list that you can transfer to a Palm or other PDA. (Editing will be needed)

Use it to "print" recipes from an older cookbook program that cannot otherwise export recipes to text or MasterCook format. After editing, you can then import them into MasterCook.

Use it to create a text file of the complete Nutrition Analysis (not just the summary). Select the Nutrition Analysis icon. Select Print. Select a Generic/Text Only printer. Select the Print button in the Print window. Name the file (example: name.prn). Then open the PRN file in a word processor or text editor.

32. Recipe Partially Prints or Does Not Print

Recipes will not print, or parts of the layout are missing from the recipe when printed.

General Printer Troubleshooting
Follow these steps to correct the printer problem:

-From the Start button click on the Run option.
-In the box after the word Open type CONTROL and click on OK. This will open the Control Panel.
-In the Control Panel open the Printers folder, right-click on the printer and select Properties.
-Click on the Details tab then click on the Spool Settings button.
-Put a dot next to Print Directly to Printer and make sure the Spool Data Format is set to RAW.

Depending on the printer and printer driver these options may not be available.
-Click on the Graphics tab and try lowering the DPI setting in the Resolution box.
-Click on the OK button, go back to the Printers screen in the Control Panel and single-click on the printer so it is highlighted.
-Then click on the File menu and click on Set As Default, close the Printers windows and the Control Panel.
-Try printing.

Make sure the printer is directly connected to the computer. Hooking up a printer through a scanner or switch box may cause problems resulting in information failing to arrive at the printer. If there are any devices connected between the computer and printer, disconnect these devices and connect the printer directly to the computer.

If problems continue, contact the printer manufacturer for the latest printer drivers. These drivers will often correct errors and may improve the performance of the printer.

Also, make sure there are no other programs running in Windows. To make sure there are no other programs running:

1. Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and press the DEL key. This will bring up a Close Program Box. The Close Program Box will show the currently running programs.
2. The only program that should be listed in the task list is Explorer (or Microsoft Explorer). If there are other programs in the task list highlight one of them and click on the End Task button.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the only program listed in the Close Program Box is Explorer. NOTE: some programs can not be shut down using these steps. Shut down those programs according to the instructions specific to those programs.
4. Once the Explorer is the only program in the Close Program Box try printing from the program again.

33. Recipe Titles Only From One Category

If I wanted to send a friend a list of recipe titles from one category in a cookbook here is what I would do:

34. Recipes Starting On Next Page, Page Breaks

Q: How do I get my recipes to start on the next page so that they don't break up over two pages?

A: Use the Page tab in the Palette window. Select from the Start drop-down list.

If you want to prevent the recipes from starting on a new page select One after another.

"Page Breaks":
To force a recipe on to the next page if you choose to Start one after another you can add blank lines to the end of the previous recipe. (For example, in the direction section if your recipe ends with the directions.) Check your results in the Print Preview.

[ Top of Page ]

35. Recipes With Menu

Q: How do I change the font size of recipes when working with a menu?

A: We can only edit the menu and not recipes. What I would recommend is to print your menu separate from your recipes. In the Print window remove the checkmark from the Include Recipes box. Then you can print your recipes separately, editing the way you want them to print.

[ Top of Page ]

36. Recipes Without Ingredients

Q: I am about to finally print a family cookbook. Some of the recipes are just directions, and they do not have specific amounts of ingredients. My problem now is that the text is right below the recipe title. I want to space it differently. In the Print Layout pane of the Edit Print Design screen I tried to drag portions of the text further below, but the whole text moves. I cannot seem to be able to pick one part or another of the recipe.

A: Since some have ingredients, that field is always there. Therefore when there are no ingredients, the field shrinks putting the directions next. Try moving just the direction portion down a little. When there are no ingredients, that will be the field below the title, but with it moved down a little, that should leave a little more space between the title and the directions.

When I have recipes like this, I always go ahead and enter in the ingredient names, leaving the other fields blank. This helps when I am searching multiple cookbooks by ingredient. However, I can see that for printing purposes, you might want to leave them out. You could put a period in a couple of the ingredient lines. Then you could white them out before duplicating the cookbook. The white out should be unobtrusive, even on the original copy from your printer.

37. Removing Designs

Q: I created a print design, which I called "plain." It had a problem, and I wanted to delete it. I couldn't find a way to do so in MasterCook, so I deleted the plain.mcd file using Windows Explorer. However, "plain" still shows up in the list of designs in the Palette. Although if I try to open it I get the message that it doesn't exist. How can I remove it from the list of designs?

A: Hit F5 on your keyboard or select Refresh File List from the Tools Menu to refresh your files list. This will rebuild the internal MasterCook file database to show your updated file list.

[ Top of Page ]

38. Removing Lines That Print

Q: I am trying to print out a family cookbook using Delicious Desserts design. When I print out, I get a line running across the page before and after each recipe. These lines do not show up on the print preview. Is there anyway to delete them?

A: They don't show in the preview or display with the standard zoom settings. I had to change the zoom to find them.

The first one is in the text box below the categories. Change the Zoom (lower left) to 100% so you can see the box. Click on it to select it. Click the Palette and you'll see how a border was chosen (in the Object tab). Set that to no border.

The zoom menu is available for the print preview too. Click [Print Preview] and right click inside that window.

TIP: The two panes in the Edit Design window are size-able. Have you used that yet? To see more of the right-hand pane, move the mouse over the two vertical lines between the two panes. Click and drag the stretching cursor.

[ Top of Page ]

39. Resizing Objects

Q: If I want to resize a category (example: author) so that it will fit on the same line with another category (example: yield), how do I do that?

A: When you are resizing something, be sure that "Show Grid" is selected from the Design drop-down menu. Using "Snap To Grid" can be helpful, too, because then you know just where you are and that your objects are lining up exactly. Then, when you are actually doing the resizing, click the object, like author, so the slashed line border appears around it. On the ends of that field, you will see a black box. Hover your mouse over the box until it turns into a two-sided arrow, then click and drag the sides of the field to the size you need, first one side and then the other. When the two fields are of a size that they will not overlap one another, you should be able to drag them alongside each other (the mouse pointer will have four arrows). Do keep in mind that you are looking at just one recipe in the cookbook, and leave enough space so that a particularly long author name will still fit. (In other words, use print preview to check this out before you print!) You can make finer adjustments by changing the size of the grids shown.

40. Tips for Printing a Cookbook

It does not have to be a long project once you learn to navigate MasterCook. The Edit/Publish palette is the key. It took me a long time to understand it and many tries. I used one of the template cookbook for design and kind of played with it and called it "Best Design" by then it was saved and I worked with it. I edited the fonts but reverted back to Times New Roman because it is easy to read. I played with the margins, but the grid bar once I understood how it worked made it real easy to move everything to align where I wanted. One thing I noticed be very careful, look at the Hide Tab so it prints only what you want. Once set all works. I will be honest I had problem with the printing. I could not figure it out. So I took some hints from the board and here is what I ended up doing. I took a legal piece of paper 8.5 x 14 and printed two recipes on it so I could then cut the page in half. Recipe one first then took the paper out and reinserted it in the printer, if you do that make sure when you put the paper back in your printer you put it so the recipe your previously printed is face up. Make sure that you set your paper size to CUSTOM - WIDTH 8.5, HEIGHT 7. I put the Margins at left 0.75, right 0.75, top 0.5 and bottom 0.5. Orientation landscape - Print set up one recipe. It may have taken more time to do it that way but I had control. This way I printed one category at a time and knew it was in alphabetical order. I could not figure out to print the list of recipes with Category name first, then the recipes in that category so I ended up doing it in Word setting up my page with same margins, fonts etc... Once printed it was perfect. I could not figure out how to print the covers MasterCook has available so same thing I used Word for the text and their "Insert Clipart" feature to make the cover. I had to use hints from the board and some creativity, but it worked. I had it bound and the margins were perfect on both sides and THE RESULT WAS WORTH EVERY MINUTE OF IT. Just remember the only thing I wanted was to be able to print two recipes on a legal size sheet of paper. It worked for me.

41. Two Column Landscape

Q: I am using the recipe design "Casual Dining Design." It is set up to print one recipe on a piece of paper in portrait. I want to print in landscape with two columns so I can print two recipes per piece of paper as I make my recipes into booklets. When I set my design for this I can not get my margins how I need them. I need to adjust each column for left and right margins, like it is two pieces of paper. Right now I can only adjust the margins for the paper size and not for each column.

A: One thing you could do is Select the Custom button on the Page Tab of the Palette Window. You could then create a Multi-Section Template and save it.

42. Weekly MealPlan - Dinner Only

Q: Can I print a weekly MealPlan (dinner only) on one sheet of paper without the nutrition info? I could post this in the kitchen and everyone wouldn't have to ask Mom, "What's for dinner"!

A: 1). Create your weekly MealPlan by dragging recipes from the MasterList (or copy/paste) onto the MealPlan and placing under the dinner section for each day of the week.

2). Delete the Breakfast and Lunch rows from the MealPlan for each day.

3). Select the Print icon from the navigation bar along the right-hand side of the screen.

4). If you don't want to print the shopping list or recipes, then remove the checkmarks from the boxes in the lower left-hand corner of the Print Window.

5). Press the PRINT button.

NOTE: At this time we are not able to exclude the printing of the nutrition info with the MealPlan.  However, maybe you could try using the "easter egg" and see if something there would work? See the entry in this cookbook for Miscellaneous - Easter Egg.

Did you want to include breakfast and lunch on the calendar, but just not print them? Here's one way I've done that.

I used the calendar to plan a few days worth of meals. Then I used File > Save days as Meal Plan. I saved it once with the name of "Feb.11-Complete". Then I went back to the calendar and saved again with the name "Feb.11-Dinners." Then I just deleted the Breakfasts and Dinners from the "Dinners" version of the Meal Plan. I still have the "Complete" meal plan to refer to, and the calendar still lists all meals, too. I printed out the "Dinners", choosing not to include the recipes and shopping list, and I have a seven day list of dinners.

My printout from the Meal Plan had the days listed as Day 1 of 7, etc., rather than having the name of the day and the date, but otherwise they look the same. As long as you gave the Meal plans themselves a good enough name, you could still keep them straight.

43. Windows NT/2000

Q: I am trying to run MasterCook under Win NT 4.0. I can not get the program to print. The program suddenly closes instead of printing. Is there a work around?

A: This program was not tested with and is not supported on Windows NT or 2000. This means that Sierra Technical Support has very little information about running the program on these platforms. There is, however, one work-around that is necessary for printing.

1. Add a local printer even if it's not physically connected to the machine. Use the same software for the networked printer for ease of installation. Go to Start--Settings-->Printers, then double-click the Add Printer option to begin the installation. UNselect "print test page" as part of the installation process to eliminate an error message that will occur when install can't find the local printer.

2. Select local printer as "default" from printers folder. Go to Start-->Settings-->Printers, right click on the new driver and choose Set As Default.

3. Print from MasterCook, selecting the network printer in the print dialog box.

4. Set the Network printer as Default when not using MasterCook.

It is also possible to get it to work by disabling bi-directional printing in the printer control panel.

-Go to Start-->Settings-->Printers.
-Right click on the Network printer and choose Properties.
-Click on the Details tab, then the Spool Settings button and look for the 'Enable bi-directional printing' checkbox and uncheck it.
-If the bi-directional printing setting does not appear in your spool settings window, contact the printer manufacturer for instructions on finding this setting.

44. Your Text Here Bug

Q: I am having trouble while trying to print out my recipes. In the section of the directions. One to three times after each line of directions, a "Your Text Here" printing shows up and I can't remove it. It is inside of the directions box displayed on the recipe print out. Does anyone know how to remove this? I can remove a text box when I add it outside of the ingredients or directions box by pushing the delete button. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

A: This unwanted text string appears when you edit certain designs, but not all of them. It appears to happen when you use Select All.

I would recommend you copy the design off of the CD and replace the one that is in your SIERRA/MasterCook 5/MC Tools folder.

After you copy it into that folder, you will want to right click on the design, choose Properties and remove the checkmark from Read-only.

When you edit this design again, I would recommend you avoid using Select All and check (by using Print Preview) to make sure this unwanted text string doesn't appear before you save your design.

You can get rid of it this way:

1. Select the box (in the left pane of the Edit Print Design screen) with "Your Text Here" in it.
2. Select the OBJECT tab on the PALETTE.
3. Delete the words "Your Text Here" from the text box at the bottom of this tab.

This was fixed in version 6.0. This unwanted text string doesn't appear any longer.
