Academic Honesty
According to the 2001-2002 AUC Catalog page 63, "Academic dishonesty is
NOT acceptable in an institution dedicated
to learning or in any society. Academic dishonesty includes....plagiarism..receipt
of information during an examination, use of unauthorized materials
during an examination, transferal of unauthorized information....,
etc...."
Academic honesty represents a major pillar in engineering ethics, since
engineering holds paramount the safety, health and lives of people. Therefore,
severe punishment will be taken in
any case of academic dishonesty. The following procedures will be taken
in case of any violation either in
the exams, assignments or lab reports:
-
First attempt: warning of the individual,
taking off points depending on the degree of violation
-
Second attempt: getting a zero grade
(F) in the lab report, assignment or exam
-
Third attempt (RED
CODE): reporting the case to the dean of students, filing an
official case which could result in failing the entire course, warning
or dismissal .
To avoid any violation:
-
Mention all the cited references in this format: (Hertzberg:
247) or (Smith et al: 220) for multiple authors.
-
Use quotation marks whenever you copy a part out of a web site or
a textbook, and refer to the quoted part using the above format, or in
footnotes for web sites or by using numbers for your references.
You will not be penalized for quoting, but
you will be penalized for missing the others' credit.
-
Mention the source for any graphic object (jpeg or gif image) you
paste from the internet below it or in the caption.
-
Use your own words in the assignments--paraphrase and summarize,
but never copy from the textbook.
-
20% off for missing the references section in the lab reports.
-
You are expected to bring all your tools in the exam, including a calculator
with a clean (empty) memory.
