WELDING PROJECT
Objective
This project is a guided research-type project. You are required
to design a testing scheme that enables you to investigate the effect of
the different welding variables on the resulting mechanical
behavior of the welded component using .
Requirements
-
Groups of 4 or 5 students are formed.
-
Design the joint section
-
Welding should be conducted using oxyacetylene, electric arc, or friction
stir welding to weld steel or Aluminum strips with different thicknesses.
(Sample dimensions)
-
Prepare specimens (according to the ASTM in order to conduct the following
analysis: 1) Tension test, 2) Bending test 3) Hardness test, 4) Microstructural
investigation for the weld nugget and the HAZ, 5) Non-destructive testing
for detection of welding defects ( Die Penetrant, magna-flux, and ultrasonic,
techniques)
-
Study the effect of welding process, and material thickness on the analyzed
properties
-
Submit a detailed technical report that gives complete account of the following:
a. Introduction
b. Objective
c. Review
d. Component Design (progress report)
e. Experimental procedure (casting steps)
f. Results
g. Discussion
h. Conclusion
i. The cast product should also be submitted along with the report
on Dec. 22nd 2002
