I regret to inform you of the passing of Matthew K. Alden on December 1st, 2003. Matthew died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig's disease. He was diagnosed with ALS less than three years ago. ALS is a progressive, fatal neurological disease affecting as many as 20,000 Americans with 5,000 new cases occurring in the United States each year. Matt was 42 years old when he passed away. Matt graduated from California State University Fresno State with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1989. Matt worked as an Electrical Engineer in Naval Engineering Division, Specifications Branch, MLCPAC from 1990 to 1997. In 1997 Matt accepted a promotion in grade and from then worked in Projects Branch, Electronic Systems Division, MLCPAC where he took great pride and very much enjoyed working to support the Coast Guard's icebreakers and their science missions. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. Matt is survived by his wife, 9-year-old son, and 7-year-old daughter. Matt enjoyed sports and was an avid participant in many of the Coast Guard Island sporting leagues. These included volleyball, basketball (serving as commissioner one year), soccer, and softball. Matt was a dedicated Coast Guard civilian employee who loved his work and the friends he made while on Coast Guard Island. He was grateful for the support he received from his friends and co-workers in his struggles with ALS. This support included leave donations, a cart purchased through CGMA, efforts to modify his work space to allow him to continue working with the ALS related disabilities, and modifying his home to ease the restrictions caused by the ALS related disabilities. A Memorial Service was held on December 7th, 2003. Please share in a close friend's memories of Matt.
