YABA Approves New Rule to Benefit High School Programs
October 30, 2000

The Young American Bowling Alliance has announced the approval of a new rule aimed at improving the service they provide to their membership. This rule will allow the YABA National Headquarters to issue a moral sanction certificate to programs conducted by civic, fraternal, scholastic, benevolent, or religious organizations (i.e., High School, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.). Entry is limited to those affiliated with the organization conducting the program. YABA members may participate in a moral support program with awards recognition automatically extended. Non-members may join YABA during the program after which time they will receive all benefits.

YABA's rules previously stated that YABA sanctioned leagues must be comprised entirely of YABA members, while the Moral Support Certificate indicates that these specially recognized leagues will not be required to have 100 percent of their membership in YABA to receive member benefits.

The rule was added in response to some state high school athletic associations, which prohibit the mandating of membership in an outside organization for athlete participation. This will allow high school programs throughout the country to sanction and provide current members with YABA services while exposing potential members to what YABA has to offer.

"YABA has worked very hard with the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America to provide high school bowlers with an opportunity to compete interscholastically and still be recognized for their achievements," said YABA Executive Director Jim Zebehazy. "It is YABA's mission to provide exciting opportunities for the personal development of youth, and this is another step towards doing so at the high school level."
