Welcome to Habitat

Formed in February 1998, the McGill University Campus Chapter Habitat for Humanity is one of twelve Habitat for Humanity campus chapters in Canada, and one of more than 330 campus chapters worldwide. Organized by McGill students, the group is striving to capture the imagination, energy and hope of students to productively and responsibly involve them in the work of Habitat for Humanity.

Last year, the McGill Chapter is renovated the basement of the Montreal Diet Dispensary. Students are involved in all aspects of the project, including the design, fundraising, and construction. Educational and fundraising events on campus, such as a Pumpkin Carving Contest, are ongoing projects.

In the spring of 1999, the Chapter sent seventeen members to Paterson, New Jersey to participate in the Annual Collegiate Challenge. They assisted in the construction of four houses, working on tasks such as painting, nail setting and caulking under the direction of the local Paterson affiliate. As well, the group was able to meet and speak with the Paterson Habitat community while sharing a meal with new and old homeowners and other volunteer groups. It was a priceless learning experience for the members, not only in terms of construction but also as a chance to participate in the work of Habitat.

This year, the McGill Chapter helped out with the construction of a duplex in St Henri, Quebec. During our spring break, we are planning to participate in the Collegiate Challenge again! A group of us will be departing for the United States to help a community in need. Meetings for this trip are ongoing, in you are interested in joining us, please contact us!

Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-profit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing worldwide. It is in partnership with people of different backgrounds, races, religions, and incomes. Their common bond is that they recognize the housing needs of low-income families, and understand their part in helping someone else to realize the dream of homeownership.
