Despite a schema that covers comedy from the
inception of sound to the present, this page betrays my bias for early
comedies, with a few nods to recent movies. Could it be that today we
simply don't have talents like Sturges and Lubitsch, Grant and Lombard;
that our age is more difficult to satirize; that movies are hard pressed
to top what seems to be the inherent lunacy of modern times? Perhaps I
do not part easily with wit and satire (both affectionate and biting),
with the comical and even farcical aspects of the human predicament that
are at the heart of classical comedy.
